back to article Google ponders purified Pakistani YouTube

Pakistan's Standing Committee on Information Technology and Communications has recommended that the nation end its ban on YouTube. Pakistan was unhappy with YouTube for years, on grounds that it made it possible to view content considered blasphemous. Once the controversial film “Innocence of Muslims” made it to Google's …

China threw google china staff in jail

If Pakistani authorities would have thrown google staff here in jail... then the filtering would have come free of cost... I see google's diapers getting wet in china and elsewhere but ... Anyway the people wanted ban to be lifted cuz their stupid videos cannot defame some who is respected .. and cannot fame who is disrespected.. throuwing mud and dirt doesnt make any difference to a person. thats why Saudia didnt ban youtube.. we respect jesus more than Christians themselves and it is part of believe and completion islamic faith that jesus and moses were and are the prophets of Allah. But they themselves dont respect their own jesus .. rest aside Muhammad.

Well that was quite hard to read. But I suppose there is a point there.

On the other hand if people can't take challenges and questioning of their beliefs without resorting to violence, persecution, prohibition or derogation (is this a word?) of others then they have a serious problem.

A suitable XKCD would be appropriate however I can't think of one offhand therefore here's "How to suck at your religion" instead.

They have a number of them - insecurity, gullibility, paranoia and stupidity. The main reasons why people become religious zealots in the first place. Sadly all the above are part of the human condition so neither they no religion are going away anytime soon. Couple the above with violent psychopathic tendencies and you have ISIS.

You make the assumption that because someone is western, they are automatically Christian. There are many that disrespect Jesus because they are atheist and do not need to believe in a deity to find meaning in their lives. There are also plenty of people in the west that are Christian and respect Christ - you just do not see it.

Pakistan's blasphemy laws were created by the British Raj. They are so old fashioned out there.

The British 'blasphemy' laws were much as they were in Britain at the time, although in the UK they'd arisen from Common Law rather than legislation. It was an attempt to reduce inter-communal strife and were really hate-speech laws with some sensible measures about disturbing religious assemblies, trespassing on burial grounds etc. tacked on. Indeed, a 'blasphemy' law as such wouldn't have made much sense in the Raj since Hinduism has no such concept (although a 1927 amendment to include insulting the founder of a religion was an illiberal move made under Muslim pressure). We have hate speech laws in the UK now, just to remind you.

In the 80s the laws were 'Islamised', hugely expanded, and the maximum penalty increased from 10 years to death. The blasphemy laws are a legacy of the 80s dictatorship of Zia Al-Haq, not the British.
