back to article ICANN banked $60m from dot-word auctions. Just what exactly is it going to spend it all on?

The chairman of ICANN has finally been pushed into revealing his plans for the $60m the domain-name overseer has banked from auctioning off the rights to dot-words. The $60m (£40m) – or $58,819,832 to be precise – was raised from organizations competing to set up registries for new generic top-level domains like .ping ($1.5m …

And let's be honest here. How many have the scam/spam alerts firing off when we see a .ping domain just as everyone thinks the .biz domain is solely reserved for spam.

I should really get to finding a list to block all those new domains.

        Just whitelist the originals.

    Where there is money

Where there is money, there is graft. It is good to see that ICANN isn't above this maxim... NOT!

Seems like the penultimate sentence summed up exactly what has and will happen to all those millions.

You can bet the board is desperately doing everything possible to ensure that money gets in their pockets rather than lavished on the community.

"You can bet the board is desperately doing everything possible to ensure that money gets in their pockets rather than lavished on the community."

Exactly. Asking this question is redundancy extraordinaire, we KNOW where the money will go. It will go first into the pockets of the board, then the pockets of upper management and then, maybe, if there is some left, into some infrastructure internal IT improvement projects (or, conversely, into surveys to examine the feasibility of internal IT improvement projects).

Nothing will change here, move along.

$60 million is only the beginning. There are more auctions, as well as annual TLD renewal fees from what I recall.

What will they spend it on?

    Is this a trick question?

Ho's and snort, if they've got any sense. Oh, wait, this is ICANN...

Coke and hookers is traditional, although it may need to be paid as bonuses first...

They should spend the money trying to encourage/force IPv6 adoption

Actually the first $10M has already been spent

Retaining FIFA board and Olympic Committee members to advise on best practice for fiscal transparency and tendering processes.

Presuming a successful knowledge transfer, the remaining funds will be found to actually have been a misreported accounting error, and in fact it will prove urgently necessary to hike .com fees.

    My suggestion

Just give everyone their money back and scrap all these pointless gTLDs...

It was obvious from the outset that the .word scheme was a get-rich-quick scheme, of no benefit to anyone except for the ICANN execs pension funds...

I believe the technical term for the spending off large amounts of unexpected cash is "Hookers and Blow".

    FIFA

Man, ICANN are doing a fantastic job of making FIFA look like the epitome of transparency and anti-corruption.

At least they're not running something important upon which the rest of the world relies...

Any remaining funds would be spent according to the internet community's wishes.

So it will be proclaimed that the community's wishes are for the board members to increase their staff, hold more meetings in exotic places, have the latest in luxury cars and accommodations. Oh.. and very large bonuses for doing such a great job. Let's not forget the upgrade in amenities and furnishings of the executive offices.

And let's not forget that the board members should be awarded $10,000 a night hookers...err...escorts instead of the current $1,000 a night companions. After all, they're doing a great job.

The $10k girls are the same as the $1k girls (literally, the exact same people), with no differences in service either. ;)

Very true. But it will make the "customer" feel better....
