back to article Europol shuts down darn RAMNIT botnet

Euro cybercrime cops have taken down the RAMNIT botnet, which has infected 3.2 million computers worldwide, including 33,000 in the UK. The National Crime Agency's cybercrime unit worked with cops in the Netherlands, Italy and Germany to shut down command-and-control servers used by the botnet. One of the servers was housed in …

    Oh dear

"The NCA is advising people to check whether their computer has been infected by downloading specialist disinfection software, which is available free of charge at CyberStreetWise or GetSafeOnline."

The police want me to download some software and run it on my computer. How do I know this isn't some backdoor to enable the police or the government or GCHQ to spy on me? There is no more trust; they lost mine a long time ago.

If I were the enterprising sort, I'd include a copy of that Press Release with a couple logos of those companies and offer the attachment as the disinfection tool...

The "non-links" point to a page that gives you a choice of either the Symantec tool or the MS tool.... still... Do we trust either of them? Probably MS more than Symantec methinks.

    The bill for all this...

... and other investigations should be sent to MS directly for allowing this shit to happen time and time again.

How many different ways are there that someone could get into your house that you don't know about and the house builder could not anticipate? Perhaps someone could be sneaky and tunnel underneath and you would never know. When you get broken into in this way are you going to send the bill to the house builder?

If Microsoft had a crystal ball no doubt they would have fixed every ingenious unanticipated flaw that someone managed to exploit. I'm sure they love having the reputation they have amongst people like you who I guarantee couldn't code a universally used 100% secure operating system yourself.

Re: The bill for all this...

Bollocks. It all stems from MS old code that to allow people to use computers *easily* they built in things to allow people to do things rather than have a proper security schema. Then came the Internet and multiuser environments, and all they done (and still do) is plumb in new pipes to get around it.

MS never had any security from bottom up - it is all patched and repatched and even repatched - and hence why all the spam mails, scams, and other shite ALWAYS involves a botnet of MS compromised machines.

Stupid OS with stupid users = disaster.

        As someone once said:

"Microsoft allowed people to use a computer that shouldn't even be let near a computer".

Also the premise that all computers crash a lot, and is expected.

Personally, I am getting fed-up with the amount of crap I get hitting my mail servers/httpd servers from bloody compromised MS machines. Eventually it looks like I will have to blackwall the whole Internet thanks to MS.

The ferry operators start before you even get there ... how much is a single? We only do returns! I only want to go one way. Well if you don't pay us our double ransom you can just stay in Pompey.

      That's a triple ransom ...

OH, come on. Gosport is a shite hole compared to Pompey - where I live. Now if only we could get rid of the bloody johnny foreigners.
