back to article Marc Benioff tethers Salesforce cloud to Blighty

Salesforce has opened its first European data centre in the UK. The CRM-as-a-service provider today announced the new facility in Slough, west of London, had gone live build by NTT. It’s the first of three planned European facilities. Marc Benioff’s firm plans data centres in France and Germany next year, too. The UK, along …

The problem for European customers is one of corporate and customer data leaving the relatively favourable regulation of the EU for the US.

    How does that make sense?

Insulation from the US was one reason cited by the AWS host, saying customers could now architect clouds for back-up and redundancy while keeping their data in the US, as they can now make their clouds span the Frankfurt and existing Dublin regions.

Here is a low-hanging fruit for improvement, El Reg: get an intern and make him read what you have written. Choose one who has "reading comprehension" on his CV though. Today one can never be sure.

    Insulation from the US?

    Salesforce is a US company.

US warrantless Data slurping included ALL subsidiaries of US Companes everywhere in the world.

I fully expect a nice fat pipe from Slough back to the US is already being spliced with a branch directly into NSA HQ.

    What price isolation then?

They don't even need to run a pipe from Slough back to the U.S. They can just pipe the data 150 or so miles north to that big NSA facility in Yorkshire!!

    WTF?

SFDC has to replicate data to datacenters outside the EU anyway....

Maybe you can get real "EU only" hosting of your data once SFDC has their French and German datacenters online, but for now anyone using the new Slough datacenter is going to have their data replicated to a U.S. datacenter to provide failover in case of problems at Slough. And as far as I know, Salesforce.com is not planning to offer "EU only hosting" in the future, even after they bring up the German and French datacenters.
