back to article LulzSec supersnitch led attacks on UK, Australia – report

Hacktivist kingpin turned FBI snitch Hector Xavier "Sabu" Monsegur orchestrated attacks against 30 countries, including systems in the UK and Australia, according to a report that joins the dots between sealed court docs and leaked IRC chat logs. According to the court documents, Monsegur persuaded other hacktivists – among …

    So...

The FBI is an accomplice in hacking foreign companies...?

      Re: So...

No, it's the other way around. Sabu was committing those offences at the behest of the FBI in return for more lenient treatment. Would be nice to see his handlers pay for the damage they have willfully caused out of their own pocket. IIRC in McKinnon's case the US Navy assigned a value of ~$250K per login with default password, and inflation has happened since then, so I think the FBI handlers could be on the hook for a few $m a piece, perhaps more if Sabu had to apply a bit more effort than using the default password to crack those machines & accounts.

      Re: So...

Technically, at least according to the Department of Defence and the Executive Branch, the FBI could be an accomplice to acts of war against foreign nations. Remember them claiming that they'd consider cyber "warfare" as an actual act of war?

        Re: So...

No, no - it's an act of war if somebody else does it to the US. If the US does it, it's vital to the national defence.

Starting wars is BAU for the US government agencies, and as most of the death and destruction happens elsewhere and no one is prosecuted for their criminal behavior there is no incentive for them to cease being criminals.

Then they moan and bitch about encrypted phones

From Hoover the body remover to COINTELPRO to Oklahoma to Clipper Chip to Waco to creation of "imminent terrorist menaces" from whole cloth since the late 90s while missing the one that were actually being fomented. Then we have the "War on Drugs". And now this. Did I mention utter incompetence at getting their IT in order?

Large bureaucracies are and always will be undistinguishable from the mob.

Now, if they only had a secret deal with aliens to show for this. But no...

Try and remember that politicians have less interest in governing than they have in perpetuating their ideological species and they will hijack any agency withing reach. We absolutely need to insure safe havens for whistleblowers. It's our only defense and their most hideous nightmare. We need to be crazy pamphleteering bolsheviks at the Russian front in 1916.

    Stop

    Correction.

"Sabu helped Feds target 30 countries, documents reveal". Actually, the docs (probably released by Sabu's defence team or chums in an attempt to sway public opinion and smear the FBI) show that Sabu co-operated with the FBI and helped them gather information and evidence on many hackers, their techniques and criminal activities and intentions. Everything else is just conjecture. If anyone wishes to claim otherwise then please do show evidence of any criminal use of the data by the FBI after it was deposited on the controlled server by Sabu and chums. Indeed, please do show evidence of the use of the by the FBI of the data in anything but the pursuit of criminals charges against Sabu and chums. Oh, what's that - you can't, even though you really want to baaaah-lieve in the evilness of the FBI? This is my surprised face, not.

      Re: Correction.

So, four down votes (and one snark) by people that want to disagree but are unable to provide any proof the FBI made any use of the data gathered from the hacking for anything other than prosecuting Sabu and chums. This is my surprised face, honest!

        Re: Correction.

So by your argument, the hackers themselves aren't guilty unless you can show they "made any use of the data gathered from the hacking"

          FAIL

          Re: MrMeme Re: Correction.

"..... the hackers themselves aren't guilty unless you can show they "made any use of the data...." Nope, because their crime was the actual hacking, not what they did with the data (though what they planned to do with it could be criminal in intent alone). Maybe you should leave the conversation to those with some actual understanding of how the law works, mmmkay?
