    WTF?

    Bling.....Bling.....

I wonder how many Middle Easter oil rich princes have these to compliment their gold plated Colt 1911 .45 ACP pistols and gold plated AK47s?

Trawling through their shiny gold plated warez, I see they also offer the gold treatment to the Xbox, PlayStation and Blackberry.

Digging through their gallery, I must admit that the anodized MacBooks look a damned site better than those adorned with gold.

Perhaps the MacBook just looks better when it's a little dull?

    Rather sad really

Apart from it looking increbibly tacky and actually quite pathetic ( "It can be done, so it shall be done!" ) can you imagine all the smears and stains from skin-grease on that shiny surface?

The big P icon, because her and her ilk are driving the need for this sort of crap!

    Yawn

El Reg seems to post an identical story about once a year that somebody has [gold plated / diamond encrusted / added expensive tat to] their [iPhone/iPod/MacBook] - I like apple products, but this is boring.

    You could buy it

If chavs don't loot the warehouse first.

    Worth its weight in gold?

The plating is only a couple of microns thick, I doubt you'd be able to find a set of scales that could weigh the gold used accurately enough to value it.

PS gold plating a piece of aluminium makes it scratch-proof - how do you think that works then?

      gold plating

The article says "with a clear coating to make it scratch proof". Clearly (ahem) it's not the gold but the plastic coating on top of the gold that stops scratches.

    Scratch proof?

Isn't 24ct gold REALLY soft ?, like so soft that the device is EASILY scratched rather than scratch proof ?

    Price of gold

"Considering the price of gold seems to defy gravity, perhaps this will a rare example of a laptop that actually gets more valuable as time goes by."

Nope... price of gold has never been this high, so it can only drop in value... Marketing FAIL

People have been saying that since 2000

And they keep being proved wrong. Typically gold rises when the economy looks like it might get worse, like now. The worse the economy gets, the higher gold goes.

    Gauche

And I hope they skin it in some protective film, otherwise every scratch will make you cry.

    Scratch proof?

Just because a metal is valuable doesn't mean it's durable. Example, pure gold coins must be handled with extreme care. Even cleaning them with a microfiber cloth can leave visible scratches, and dropping one accidentally will likely bend it. That's why old westerns show characters biting pieces of gold to test their purity--very malleable.

If the coating on these MBPs is real pure gold then there's almost certainly a thick clearcoat on top to protect it.
