BMW to provide 'low emission' cars for London Olympics

This really is an epic fail on the part of the organisers.

We've been told for years that the games would be car free. And now they've bought 4000 cars for the games? So they are admitting that they can't run the games without a huge fleet of cars, but Joe Public will be expected to attend the games (paying a fortune for tickets in the process) without using his car. Which of course means that they didn't have to bother building any car parks at the venues and could, therefore, save money on the land they purchased. This was an incredibly short sighted view. Venues without car parks will be incredibly difficult to sell on after the games, at best they will have to sell them at vastly reduced prices. Which means that once it's all over the games will have cost at least as much as they would have done had they forked out for car parking space.

As an exmple British Cycling are almost certain to remain based at the velodrome in Manchester which is widely regarded to be as good as any velodrome in the world if not the absolute best. So there's one venue they're going to have trouble shifting. Or they could have saved themselves a huge wedge and just held the track cycling events in Manchester. Similarly Britain is widely regarded to have some of the best mountain biking facilities in the world, yet the MTB events are to be held a new third rate venue in London. The amount of money spend on new venues in London is a joke. I'm frankly amazed they haven't decided to flood half the east end in order to hold the sailing events locally too.

Any chemistry GCSE student can tell you that excessive gas emissions can easily be controlled by the use of a large bung.

What a suprise...

What a suprise, rather then awarding the prize to a car that has already been produced and proven and with plans to build production plants in England, the government awards the prize to a car that has not been produced and is only on the drawing board...

No taking bets on how late delivery of these cars will be...

Would it perhaps be cynical to suggest..

that the overriding concern is the commercials rather than the environmental friendliness. A better deal from a car company trumps coming in at half the target CO2 emission levels.

The BMW contract also including new met police cars and bikes, and BMW providing bikes as well as cars for the Olympics. They probably gave a better deal, and given that BMW are knowen to be working on Hydrogen cars over 'leccy they may well be hoping to have something by then.
