The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation has warned the price of tea will "jump to a record high" following droughts in India, Kenya and Sri Lanka, which have hit production hard. According to the Financial Times, the loss of yield will exacerbate a 2008 deficit which saw demand at 3.85m tonnes, while production …

    cost of a cuppa

    raw ingredients (tesco prices)

3 teaspoons sugar, about 1 pence

1 pg tips teabag, about tuppence

    splash of milk, about halfpennyworth

    boiling water, not that much

So even a 100% hike wouldn't actually affect underlying costs.

    Something must be done!

Don't give a shit about the price of oil and petrol. But a cuppa is every man's right. The government should introduce a "windfall" tax on Brooke Bond, et al. and cut their bonuses. I bet MPs get an increase in their expenses to cover the dramatic rise but what about the man in the street?

    IT angle ?

Never heard of the Lyons Electronic Office ? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LEO_(computer)

Besides, I may have to cut down my usage of my Infinite Improbability Drive if the cost of a nice hot cup of tea goes up much more.

Who cares about the IT angle??

... this is serious business. As such it should be reported in ALL British publications from the Beekeeper's Almanac to the Cottager's Daily...

    Yes, but...

Okay, we got the price in Kenya, the drought situation and production reduction in India - but what we really want to know is, what's the price of tea in China?

Don't worry Sarah - he's only showing off because he learned things about women's bodies from that show on channel 4 last night.

Most of those hormonal teens were far more experienced and mature than weirdcult can ever hope to be - he probably lives in his mum's box room and has a circle of stiff socks around his workstation.

    Lovely tea

Just had 3Kg of loose-leaf Welsh Brew delivered to the house- cost us about a tenner. Me & the Mrs love tea. Once that supply runs out (in about a month, maybe), then we'll be seriously concerned about a doubling of the wholesale price. Mind you, if we stopped snorting it off the naked derrieres of the local rugby team's hookers and started boiling it, maybe that would help..?
