back to article Porn-star cop's job not saved by First Amendment

At least he's got a fun career as an internet porn star to fall back on. In a decision handed down last week, the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit determined that an Arizona police department did not violate one of its officer's civil rights when it fired him after discovering that he ran and participated in a porn …

Porn sites love me, this I know -

...because the Dible tells me so.

Struggled to remember what Officer Dible was from. Thanks for reminding me! I'm going to dig out some top cat videos im sure i have!

    Constitutional Protection

Wouldn't it be cool if the U.S. Constitution actually had a porn-star amendment! All men are not created equal and the right of those exceptions to display their assets will not be infringed upon. Ha. We'd be a laughing stock (well, I guess we already are) but it'd still be cool.

  5. Graham Lockley

    Damn !

Waded through all that dull legal stuff only to find someone had beat me to the Dible/Dibble/TC punch :)

  6. Walter Brown

    no wonder they fired him

    he's got no talent...

i know, i saw the video...

maybe they should call him officer Drible...

    i'll get me coat....

    Changing his ways?

Maybe if he promised to change his ways by reading the Holy Dible everyday and becoming a Porn Again Christian, could it be his second coming?

    No? Right.....i'll be off then....

US customs... least provide us with entertainment don't they?

speech of freedom nuked so easily, warrantless wiretapping, blablabla...

what about the rest of the gang?

with his Cary Grant accent and lounge-lizard ways, Fancy would make a good porn star, and I imagine there could be all sorts of variations on a Benny the Ball theme, esp. in those sex-clubs in the centre of Prague! however I haven't quite worked out a role for Spook and Brain, although Choo-Choo could satisfy certain alternative cravings....

    Dibble, not Dible

The Top Cat character was called Dibble.... jeez, call yourself nerds?

  11. ryan

    copping a feel. etc. etc.

This story has left a nasty taste in my mouth.

    RE : Dibble, not Dible

No shit, Sherlock. What, did you leave your sense of humour in your desk drawer today ?

    Conflict of interest

If it's wrong to have a website of your wife rubbing one out on household implements then I don't want to be right. Unless he was in the pictures I can't really see a conflict of interest, given that having pictures of your old boiler being done by random strangers isn't currently illegal in the US. Was she hideously ugly? Plus, the suspect may well have been calling the cop a 'porn whore' in general. Or do suspects normally call them "cunts" like everyone else?

The Police force at its best

"The Dibles started the website in late 2000..."

"Not surprisingly, rumors about the site began to fly around the department, and eventually made their way to the ears of department officials."

So it took the rumours 7 years to filter through the police station, thats sure is some slow gossip and detective work.

I suspect that most of the police "grunts" were actually subscribers and kept it quiet and the "officials" -I would say- knew something, but it seems as soon as someone "takes offence"/"needs a story" then it becomes a problem.

As far as i know its not illegal to run a porn site, this is like getting sacked for working a second job in a meat factory, when your first jobs boss is vegetarian.

So what if he is in the police force, they are all people too. If its only credibility of the police force he got sacked for? I wouldnt worry, as most people dont have any respect for the police and the job they do.

btw does a dead sheep class as an "inanimate object"....

Typical American crap. You can be a cop, as long as you don't have a private life of your own when you finish here. WTF has it got to do with them? it's in PRIVATE time not POLICE time and it's not hurting them. Another reason I'm glad I DON'T live in the US. The UK is bad but the states like to take away peoples lives. Why not just but bars around the whole country and call it the USP .. United States Prison.

Does this mean the Trumpton Fire Brigade are also a man down?

  18. Matt Horrocks

    Re: USP

It'd be called the "World Prison", since they seem to think they *are* the world (e.g. the World Series, which only has American teams?)

  19. Chris Collins

    World's Series

Much as I dislike steppping in on the side of the Yanks, I think you'll find their rounders competition is originally named after a newspaper or something. The Eurovision Song Contest can have Israeli trans-sexuals competing on the same basis. It's a sponsorship thing.

    Free Speech?

quote: since running a porn site doesn't quite deserve the same force in the analysis as, say, engaging in a political debate or writing articles on environmental policy

you have the right to free speech as long as you're saying something worthwhile....that's not free

    @Nicholas van Bussel

Actually, no, I haven't picked it up yet. My box might have enough grunt to run it, but I don't have enough time to finish it - so I might as well wait until I do. By that point my box will probably have enough grunt to run it WELL. :)

Why isn't The Reg defending him?

I see The Reg are not exactly leaping to this guy's defence: "Needless to say, Dible was fired shortly after the reports hit the news." - treating it like a funny story.

The guy lost his job because he was running a legal porn site out of hours. That's not a funny story - it's a disgrace the guy lost his job. Why isn't The Reg defending him?

    Was I the only one?

After just reading the headline; was I the only one reading the story just to find out, WHICH of the two jobs he lost?

  24. philbo

Re: Why isn't The Reg defending him?

Especially as he's going to be hard up...

I wonder: was one of the "inanimate objects" a truncheon?

  25. Alan Donaly

    No one likes them

but beside that this isn't a matter of freedom of speech the court didn't rule they couldn't run their website the police dept decided he couldn't work there they don't even have to have a reason to fire you don't know why this should be any different.
