back to article Ecuador's Prez talking to UK about Assange's six-year London Embassy stay – reports

It would appear that the president of Ecuador is not a fan of Julian Assange. Lenin Moreno, the head of the South American state since 2017, reportedly said today that he had spoken to the British government about the evidently unwanted Australian-born squatter, who has been hiding in the Ecuadorean embassy in London since …

It was not ambassador, but Columbian president Morales.

Now this is actually reason that “deep state” teories aren’t as bullshity as they sounds on surface.

Someone convinced Austria, a neutral country to force-land airplane with Columbian head of state and then SEARCH such plane. No repercussions whatsoever.

    Oh Homer,

Wikileaks could have been a responsible arbiter keeping governments honest by just taking basic steps to parse the info they were given. Instead, they blanket released reams of documentation without review literally putting peoples lives at risk.

The gunship footage of US Apaches gunning down unarmed journalists needed to be made public and was an epic first step that made people aware of Wikileaks. Then they shot themselves in the foot repeatedly by releasing anything and everything that came their way, in full.

Assange (Tm) has more in common with a petulant diva than a journalist and he needs to step up and take responsibility for his idiotic actions. Any good he did has been long overshadowed by the need to feed his gluttonous ego.

The need for whistleblowers in the face of corruption or demagoguery is absolutely needed in today's world, but Saint Julian had his chance to fill that role and muffed it repeatedly.

To add to your 2 cents. For me there are 3 stories or 3 characters here, all heroes / anti-heroes in their own way:

      1. Schrems

      2. Snowden

      3. Assange

All 3 changed the world. But you get the impression that the first 2 were more 'selfless' in their acts. Whereas Assange seems the most mercurial and self-serving of the 3. He's also far more directly 'political' than the other 2. Plus the public narrative has been massaged by larger forces, so what's the whole truth?

while I share the sentiment about what wikileaks should have and shouldn't have, I'm pretty sure you underestimate the volume of information and the volume of work it would have required to parse that info. I think it's probably something well beyond capacity of a large organization to vet that info, and they were hardly more than a bunch of volunteers. And even if they had had large organization behind, there's always a high chance the other side would find enough examples of insufficient vetting, to make a point (as they did), that it was all anti-patriotic, blah, blah, blah, endengering lives of our brave soldiers, the usual damage limitation. So what do you do when you find yourself in their position? And, really, how many lives were lost? Ah, that's "classified" too...

You forget that Wikileaks didn't 'bulk leak' the original Manning material - that was done by a journalist who incompetently/inadvertently disclosed his password.

      Re: My Two Pence.

I think it's also noteworthy how Wikileaks almost exclusively targets the US and western democracies and constantly seeks to undermine them, e.g. by supporting separatist movements and other divisive issues.

And yet they have nary a bad thing to say about oppressive regimes or the people in them. It's also funny how they played a pivotal role during the US election, trying to pass emails stolen from the DNC and Hillary Clinton.

It's almost as though they've been a front for Russian intelligence for a very long time.

It's almost as though they've been a front for Russian intelligence for a very long time.

That's where wikileaks (and the media) messed up. By becoming political and advancing an agenda, they went from being an embarrassment to more of a threat. So Clinton blaming them for losing her the election, along with everyone else.. Not that the US electorate disliked her and were perhaps forced to pick the lesser evil. Assange's selective drip feed of the emails during the election campaign made him an enemy of the US liberals/democrats who may previously have supported him & wikileaks.

But there's very little evidence of Russian state involvement, despite the DNC's claims. There's growing evidence that the FBI didn't look very closely at the whole email saga, and that it may have been an inside job. And the Clintons/DNC destroying potential evidence is also rather curious. But then so is the strange case of the Awans, Pakistani IT consultants who seemed to have free reign and admin control over many Democrat's IT systems.

Just Saying ...... Are they men or mice?

Any decision taken by UKGBNI Government to allow "punishment" of Assange, rather than deem the whole sad episode a mistake made under pressure from foreign third parties, with Assange able to walk free with no fear of malicious prosecution, will have dire consequences for UKGBNI, methinks, for who in their right minds would ever share any secrets with them whenever the truth has them running scared and terrorised by the thought of perverse repercussions.

Whatever else he did or didn't do, he failed to appear at court whilst on bail. Showing contempt to the court and the justice system is very much frowned upon. There was no need for him to run away at the time. He was effectively under "house arrest" in very comfortable surrounds, one might even say in the lap of luxury. He has since chosen to spend far more time under self-imposed house arrest in much less salubrious surroundings for longer than any likely prison sentence he may get.

Julian has already been deprived from liberty of movement by Britain for 6 years

so if the maximum sentence for skipping bail in Britain is 12 months, then Britain must pay compensation to Assange for illegal imprisonment for the remaining 5 years in any case, in addition to whatever a British court might find to be the true applicable penalty for Assange'S skipping of bail _below_ the maximum in the criminal statutes.

There can not be any doubt that Assange has truely been under imprisonment during all of his time in the Ecuadorian embassy, because the British Government and their police force consciously and purposely deprived him of the freedom of movement from the European Convention of Human Rights, Protocol 4 Article 2, by threatening him to make his situation much worse if he tried to leave the Ecuadorian embassay to make any movements within the Britain territory surrounding that embassey.

Imprisonment applies whenever a state uses its overeign powers to deprive a humuan of fundamental rights provided by the European convention of human rights. It was Britains wilful and conscious decistion to apply imprisonment to Julian Assange in the form they did, and Julian Assange should really start suing for compensation for illegal imprisonment.
