To add to your 2 cents. For me there are 3 stories or 3 characters here, all heroes / anti-heroes in their own way:

1. Schrems

2. Snowden

3. Assange

All 3 changed the world. But you get the impression that the first 2 were more 'selfless' in their acts. Whereas Assange seems the most mercurial and self-serving of the 3. He's also far more directly 'political' than the other 2. Plus the public narrative has been massaged by larger forces, so what's the whole truth?

while I share the sentiment about what wikileaks should have and shouldn't have, I'm pretty sure you underestimate the volume of information and the volume of work it would have required to parse that info. I think it's probably something well beyond capacity of a large organization to vet that info, and they were hardly more than a bunch of volunteers. And even if they had had large organization behind, there's always a high chance the other side would find enough examples of insufficient vetting, to make a point (as they did), that it was all anti-patriotic, blah,blah,blah, endengering lives of our brave soldiers, the usual damage limitation. So what do you do when you find yourself in their position? And, really, how many lives were lost? Ah, that's "classified" too...

You forget that Wikileaks didn't 'bulk leak' the original Manning material - that was done by a journalist who incompetently/inadvertently disclosed his password.

I think it's also noteworthy how Wikileaks almost exclusively targets the US and western democracies and constantly seeks to undermine them, e.g. by supporting separatist movements and other divisive issues.

And yet they have nary a bad thing to say about oppressive regimes or the people in them. It's also funny how they played a pivotal role during the US election, trying to pass emails stolen from the DNC and Hillary Clinton.

It's almost as though they've been a front for Russian intelligence for a very long time.

Whatever else he did or didn't do, he failed to appear at court whilst on bail. Showing contempt to the court and the justice system is very much frowned upon. There was no need for him to run away at the time. He was effectively under "house arrest" in very comfortable surrounds, one might even say in the lap of luxury. He has since chosen to spend far more time under self-imposed house arrest in much less salubrious surroundings for longer than any likely prison sentence he may get.
