back to article Straight outta Shandong cluster noobs set new LINPACK world record

Another world record has fallen. Asian Student Cluster competitors have broken the student LINPACK record with an amazing score of 31.7 TF/s. This barely tops the former record of 31.15 TF/s set at SC16 by the University of Science & Technology of China. The new record holder is Weifang University of Science & Technology, a …

    WTF?

    ??

So the newcomers won because they had two more Nvidia GPUs installed. Who would have thought?

Gosh, I wonder how they can do better next year?

So by your logic just throwing another 50 will destroy it? Somehow I would think it's not just that simple.

The compute power of a single student with an abacus rather than a GPU barely reaches 1.0 FLOPS.

The competition involves getting the highest linpack score given a power budget. So it is a level playing field.

"the highest linpack score given a power budget"

Ah, thanks. That does clarify things somewhat. However, isn't LINPACK embarrassingly parallel? If so, the competition would be mostly about deferring your purchasing decisions until the last minute (to get the shiniest new things in your box), so what's the point?

          " so what's the point?"

The point is that real world operations have power budgets - thanks to thermal issues in server rooms as well as the ability of power feeds to keep up (try getting 500kW in Central London. You'll be waiting a while)

Just like fuel efficiency requirements imposed in motorsport at various times, this forces teams to seek more efficient answers than "keep throwing bigger engines at it"

          Re: ??

Nope, it's a level playing field here. The kids make their own choices about their mixture of CPUs and GPUs, the sponsors are willing to give them pretty much whatever they can. So it really gets down to their expertise in sizing up the applications they'll be running, matching up the best hardware, and then tuning the os/application to make it run as fast as possible. That's the point.
