back to article 'Here are 400,000 smut sites. Block them' says Pakistani telco regulator

Pakistani ISP sysadmins are getting ready to write a lot of firewall rules, with the country's telecommunications regulator issuing a list of 429,343 banned-smut Websites. The decision follows hard behind the country's decision to lift its long-standing ban on YouTube (something also qualified by rules that include blocking of …

Hence why the OP is suggesting that depictions of it are banned....

    Eliminate pron

It is easier to shut off the entire internet than to eliminate porn.

Who are they kidding? The internet grew up because of porn. All other stuff is trivial.

    1. Roq D. Kasba

      Re: Eliminate pron

What we've seen is that when you try to censor stuff a lot of people want to see, they have to get creative, and that pushes them to darker corners of the internet, teaches them encryption skills, and creates black markets. All good things in a country fighting internal racialism to increase frustration and murky association.

Will the internet also migrate to IPv6 because of porn? I'd like to see them trying to implement per-site blocking when the pornsters can have one IP address (and virtual server) per picture, if they want. Sigh.

So who's the lucky Pakistani that had to complie the list?

Did he get dispensation from the local Iman or will they now take him out back to cleanse his sins?

A very valid point. The uk's banned list is not short: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_websites_blocked_in_the_United_Kingdom

I assume there's more than that not listed as well.

But you understand it's not censorship when our government does it....

Why do you need to ban something the faithful won't look at anyway?

Seems a bit contradictory to me.

    1. Elmer Phud

We have seen how the 'Faithful' in the US have fallen to temptation and expensive rent-boys.

This measure is surely not so much to assist the ungodly but to protect the souls of those already 'chosen' from further temptation.

After all, we know very well that in these countries ruled by strong and resolute ultra-hetero males that the mere sight of a bit of flesh- is all that is required to send the beleiver on a downwartd path that ends up with women being blamed. (no matter if the god-botherer goes for man-love, it's always the women who end up being stoned or whipped or just plain killed by a mob.)

All this cost, time and effort, for something that takes even your average citizen 2 minutes to find a way around it.

The only way to stop people watching online porn is to blind them.

Because thats working well in Europe blocking torrent sites.

Nobody can get to those now can they?

Seriously though...doesn't anyone in government understand the internet at all?

On another note though will this lead to 1970s style porn consumption? I.e. walking around and looking in bushes for discarded porn.

Well, given the popularity of all things retro and hipster, it's about time "hedge porn" made a comeback.

In fact, I'm off to set up a porn website which uses Instagram filters to make the pictures look like they've been lying scrumpled up, in the rain, in a hawthorn bush for a couple of weeks.
