back to article Yow! It's the HOT NEW 'Collections' from Google! Oh wait ... it's a Google+ thing

Google+ has not only, er, joined Twitter in the past few days – it also unveiled a desperate-looking new feature dubbed Collections. The move is Mountain View's latest attempt to create some buzz around its ID-slurping "network thingy", which the ad giant has failed to successfully market as an alternative to Facebook or …

Actually, I reckon that they shouldn't use https. That way, we have no expectation of security and therefore cannot be disappointed :)

Extreme forum posting. Only not in the way 4chan is famous for..

Where does the "El Reg Tombstone" icon come from? Has it been hurled through a time portal opened by the newly-awakened LHC (first collisions today, actually)? Is it a lowly easter egg? A nice attention from the Moderatrix? What is going on?

        Likely tweaking with the form.

        Lets see if this works...

wtf is Google+ ? I have ignored it with little effort ever since my login to YouTube stopped working and it asked me to sign up to this crap.

These days it sounds like some extremely lame copy of Facebook. No one I know uses it, so I can only assume it's a big fail.

    Not dead (yet?)

There are lots of makers and open source communities taking to G+, to the point where these new collections are a very bright and welcome idea, because I might be interested in certain work an individual does for a certain open source project, but not some of his other works.

We'll see how it goes, but I would say that 'death' is a bit premature

      Re: Not dead (yet?)

Agreed. I'm happy with G+ as it is today, perhaps because it is a quite place where you can share things and find interesting people without too much noise. Were it more popular or like Facebook, perhaps then I'd like it less.

"There are lots of makers and open source communities taking to G+"

So presumably of no interest for normal people with a life then...

      Re: Not dead (yet?)

I dunno, there *did* seem to be a drift towards google+ among some open sauce types, a year or 2 ago, but the ones I pay attention to have drifted away again

"Our happiest Google+ users are those who connect with others around shared interests and passions."

The same cat pictures as on FB etc.?

Or are Google+ users more than that? 'appreciators of feline photographs' instead

    half-arsed push from Google

we need an arse-book-like "like" icon. I might even give up my registered "anonymity" for that!

    Google+

Should have been this non-intrusive not pushed down-your-throat social thing on the side of Gmail, from there it could have been grown organically.

But someone at Google thought that going all full steam against the farcebooks of the world was a good idea.

All they fostered was user contempt.

Yes, the paranoid on me says that if they're pushing it on you it can't be good for you. It's like that pretty girl throwing herself at you on the street, she must be full of stds! But the same girl on a club it's the one of your dreams if she just glances at you. Still full of stds...

    Our Happiest Google+ users?

    Err, are there any?

Or are "Happy Google+ users" one of those mystical legends like Bigfoot and the Yeti?

    Picasa

I was an early, early rube on G+. Then I discovered it TOTALLY screwed up the Picasa album sharing process. Not only did it require the receiver to sign up for G+ to look at my albums, but it changed the format of actually -looking- at my albums. Couldn't use Slideshow anymore. It took me WEEKS to back out and I will never return. Now Google actually TELLS you when you sign up for G+ that your Picasa environment with be altered, and click here to approve. FU*K YOU.

    Google+ is...

    ... Facebook for grown-ups.

I use both. FB for keeping in touch with "friends", G+ for keeping up with Industry & work related groups, news and comment.

    There's room for both

The best part of Google+ is that it is not Facebook

The best part of Google+ is that it is not Facebook. You can even follow The Register on Google+. Google+ is far from dead and a great place for the technically inclined. Not a great place for mindless cat videos and the latest paleo diet and that is a very good thing.
