Seems the Great Firewall of China is very efficient at keeping democratic freedoms out, but quite lax at letting stolen democratic technology in.

Cynical people might think this was purposeful.

Yes yes, the Chinese are evil, etc etc. Bracing for the oncoming storm.

The Chinese have 400 million internet users (and that means there's probably a lot of people running insecure boxes) and are not exactly on the best of terms with the West regards to law enforcement. There's far less of a chance of even having someone attempt to trace you if your exit node is located in China. This makes China's network infrastructure a more or less ideal proxy for industrial espionage.

The idea that somehow the Chinese are the only people equipped with the capability to perform espionage, or are the only people who'd want to, is farcical. They do practice espionage, clearly, but practically every single country on the globe is capable of the kind of APT attacks the Chinese are eternally tarred as being responsible for, and probably quite a few non-state actors, too. They're not especially advanced, mostly using modified, easily available malware, occasionally a 0day browser exploit, but often a recent public exploit.

Food for thought before people start blaming China en-masse again.
