I'm reminded of a comment in Practical Wireless very many years ago.
"... but when it's smaller than the knob to turn it on, what's the point?"
The thing is, almost all the UIs I've seen are pretty dire... and they are getting worse, not better.
Look, I know The Sun is almost as bad as The Daily mail, but don't you think that headline is going a bit too far?
Nooo!
They can't take December away. I'm one of those strange people who likes their family.
If you want to see how far we've gone backwards stick a copy of DR-DOS on a modern computer (bit of a fiddle, but do-able) and run some stuff on it. Then weep at how much more productive and responsive it is than anything on any modern OS. And yes, that include Linux.
To paraphrse...
Plugs expand to fill the sockets available for their insertion.
My work bench has 4x6way extension sockets, and I still run out!
Re: Bang the rocks together guys
I wonder... is this in any way related to 'Music With Rocks In'?
Considering that more and more services, both commercial and mandated government, are only available via the internet I can foresee the time when such a prohibition would actually force the person to break the law.
There is only one deserving 'new' word
Embuggerance
I was wrong
It's even worse that I thought, as the other previous commentards seem to have noticed.
Being a contrary bugger...
I've just bought a brand new made to order high performance machine.
I like to think I'm a musician (others may disagree) and recently found I was hitting the sides of my 5 year old dual core athlon, however, being the cheapskate that I am, this will be re-purposed as my 'office' machine, and the current 7-8 year old one held in storage for a while till I'm sure everything is settled, then cleaned out and passed on to whoever may want it.
Simple economics - they think
If you don't have the repair manual, you'll just have to buy a new one won't you. Even if you're in the trade it's an expensive nightmare trying to get service manuals.
I don't see being forced to trust anyone as particularly good news.
They gone dunnit again
Our gubbmint appears to be about to exceed their previous level of stupidity.
So instead of being taken to the cleaners, they were sent to the tailors (savile row)
Re: what happened with .NET ?
Hmmm.
Just how trivial?
Re: Vote ME for Commissioner
I'm another oldie who won't be taking up a vote for the very first time ever. I have not the remotest idea what qualities a Commissioner needs. Nor do have any idea whether any of the candidates have those qualities.
As a long suffering taxpayer (who hasn't had a pay rise for three years) I strongly resent the total waste of my money.
He was an idiot, but immature, so he'll likely grow out of that.
The court doesn't have the excuse of immaturity.
America seems to have turned cruel punishments into an art form.
Head in hands
I feel sorry for all the genuine claiments out there. They are in for a terrible time.
The scroungers will of course find ways to make a killing out of the situation
Maybe I'm getting old and senile (don't answer that!), but can somebody explain exactly what is being said here.
Sorry I'm late. I had to deal with a customer who wondered if i could just...
In other news
Old people are likely to die fairly soon.
Re: Co-operative multitasking
Indeed it can work very well, but it means that the programmers need to know what they are doing and write decent code.
P.S. The clue is the word co-operate.
But
many of these work if you get Armulator - currently being tweaked for the Pi.
Re: Pictures are childish
Hmmm two downvotes.
Is that two prudes, two fanbois or one of each?
Pure authoritative vindictiveness, nothing else.
Utterly disgusting.
Pictures are childish
So is Apple (in lots of respects).
Re: Owners of Rollers
Such a person would actually not be on this forum at all, but would have received notification of a little local dissent via the butler, who would then have conveyed his lordships views to the housekeeper, who's secretary would have posted a suitable rejoinder.
I find it curious that the authorities in the US seem to be determined to not investigate the security of their voting systems. There seem to be so many relatively obvious flaws in the current procedure you just can't help wondering if there is a hidden agenda.
Personal detai.. NO!
GAH!
Clearly, I am doing it wrong!
Am I diong it wrong?
Just checked my own 'pooter which is loaded to the gills with 'stuff'.
OS+apps = 7G
user data = 36G
This is in fact entirely in keeping with their modus operandi. They have never listened to their userbase. Anyone here tried making a suggestion? I know of a very practical one put to them years ago. First they ignored the submitter. Eventually, almost in as many words, they told him to go away and stop bothering them.
The idea... Drag-and-drop file saving RISC OS style, with example code showing how it could be integrated into the exisiting file manager.
It's just so good to see insufferable arrogance properly rewarded.
I suppose they will now follow up with a petulant sulk and ignore their critics... again.
Definitely one of the best. Obviously recorded exactly as it happened!
Clearly, nobody told the kids they were not supposed to be able to hack the machines, so they just went ahead and did it.
Re: Burying the lines is expensive
Is that just installation or does it factor in long term maintenance?
Overhead cables are under constant variable stresses (even without hurricanes). Underground stuff needs almost no maintenance - If someone digs your cable up, they pay for it, not you. For example, in my street they had to upgrade the mains a year or two ago, only they didn't replace it, just ran another one in a new trench and jointed the two in a couple of places. The guys said the old one was installed in the 1970s, but that they still had live cable around that was lead sheathed, waxed paper and tar impregnated!
Re: Star wars
No. It's not dead. It's just resting. See {nudge} it just moved.
I would have thought that the users would be even more confused if they see a different browser for each site they visit or application they use.
This situation isn't going to improve, so just bite the bullet and move to standards compliant systems. A bit of pain now will save a lot of agony later.
Sauce
Goose, Gander
Reorganise as appropriate.
In a way this is actually better than if there had been no problems at all. They have now proved that they can work round at least some faults.
Re: And! We! Will! Ignore! Yahoo! In! Return!
Ya.... who?
Quite a special guy. I don't think I would have survived all that mistreatment.
I remember a comment made in the memoirs of a psychiatrist involved in the debriefing of the Japanese POWs. It was something like:
"After what they have suffered, these men are entitled to be just as crazy as they like, and the rest of us should make allowance for them."
Re: im already not missing the start button
What is this 'Start Button' you speak of?
Re: it was enormously satisfying to thump it and have it spring back to life, everytime.
I wonder who the sad bastard was who downvoted this... Never mind. I balanced it out for you.
P.S. I was a TV repairman too many moons ago.
Re: Innovative iPad
... with cellars
Re: Shurely-
I'll give you that one.
{excuse}
It was Friday and close to beer o'clock when i posted
Fanbois to the left of me,
extremists to the right.
Here I am,
stuck in the middle anew
This was entirely predictable.
Nuff Sed.
