WTF is... NFC

David Barrett

Re: It's not too bad

@tom38

Until you get outside and realise that they gave you:

a. Too little change.

b. a mixture of £sterling and some ones lira left over from a holiday in the 80s that they managed to pass off as a pound coin earlier in the day.

c. Coins that have been handled by a number of people, some of which (statistically) didnt wash their hands after their last wee/poo/fap) - Im not overly concerned about that level of cleanliness but really when you think about it thats minging.

Card dropped in street : Phone for new card.

Cash dropped in street : ?

Thats one of the reasons I dont like carrying cash.

Another is that card payments are faster than waiting for cashier to count my change, getting it wrong, sorting it (Or more commonly just not realising that they gave you the wrong cahneg in the first place.

I really dont care if some one wants to pour over my card purchases.. the only thing that I would be concerned about would be what they thought was happening on the days when my girlfriend borrows my card and goes clothes shopping.

French Skyper freed after accidentally hacking bank's phone system

David Barrett

Re: Er, he was trying to hack them?

No you missed the point what he was trying to do was find the geographical equivalent of a charged number (rather like in the UK calling the 017xx number rather than the 084xx number) nothing illegal, in fact some companies will give it out if asked.

I don't see where the dump comes into it?

Refuse and recycling is collected from outside most peoples houses in the UK.

As for he canal, fair enough, didn't spot that, but wasn't he op talking about this scheme being used in the UK?

Well researched there...

Point 4 on the first bulleted list, I have lived in several local authorities over the UK and this is common in all.

David Barrett

Re: Into the Canal Instead

Maybe if you live next to a canal... for me it would mean a 15 minute round trip (driving) to empty my bin... I dont think I could justify the time/fuel to save 0.5p per kilo or whatever the change would be..

you have to remember, our refuse collection is not free in the UK, you might not pay for it directly but part of your council tax is for refuse collection, so this may end up reducing CT charges (or at least it should).

The world's first Windows Phone 8 hands on – what's it like?

David Barrett

Re: Disappointing

From my experience a high pixel count is no substitute for a good lens.

I have a 4.3 mp camera that takes better pics because of its lens than some of the 14mp ones I have played with.

Its also worth noting that these phones have replaceable covers, so no need for a car to prevent scuffs and scrapes so the fact its a little thicker doesn't really matter, most people go out to get an super thin device and then jam it in 3mm of ugly plastic to protect it anyway!

Judge begs Apple, Samsung to get a room, or trial will end in tears

David Barrett

Shirley the reasoning will be:

Someone untechnical wants an iPad (Bearing in mind that a good proportion of the population consider iPad and Tablet to be the same thing)

They buy a samsung because it is a tablet has rounded corners etc and looks like their friends iPad, it does what they want so they have an iPad in their mind... in this case apple lost a sale because the person was going to buy someting that looked and functioned like the tablets that they have seen apple advetising, that their friends have...

However Im with you, apple shouldnt get away with it, no one should, its anti competitive and a huge waste of everyones time.

Five ways Microsoft can rescue Windows Phone

"I swore for my next update that soldered memory is preferable to a mem that might not be there when you need it! - so WinP7 won. Duuno what I'll get next time!"

Hmm, then the Mozart must have been a tough choice given that its bundled memory is provided by an 8GB MicroSD card. Its a fu*ker to change (requires a void waranty and a torx) but at the end of the day its just a concealed SD card held in with a piece of tape.

I believe the mozart can handle upto 32GB but its a bit picky about what it wants shoved in it.

O2 leaks 3G users' mobile numbers to every website visited

David Barrett

Actually I think I know

O2 have a mobile formatted My o2 site which would only work if you used your mobile data as opposed to home broadband to view it (unless you registered your home connection with them)

This appears to have stopped working now... and the header seems to have gone..

Could be interesting fudging someone elses phone number into the header and accessing that site as there was no authentication, Im betting you could view their bills, tarriff info and call history - ill certinally give this a shot when I get home tonight and attempt to get my partners data to display via my phone...

Lovefilm dumps Flash, BLINDS Linux fans with Silverlight

David Barrett

.. true, with the exception of when they are forced.

Given the option to change and loose a small percentage of their customers or stay with flash and loose most content and thus the most custom they would do a cost benefit analysis and decide on the better option.

Of course the best option is to do nothing... Until you are forced, as they have been.

David Barrett

Wikipedia says...

Wikipedia says that Windows has 87% market share at the moment,

So if there are 2000000 love film users that means that 1740000 of them are running windows some of the remainder will be using PS3 etc and the rest running Linux/Mac.

Now remember that Love Film is a business, it exists to make money.

Is the best way to do this to devote a huge amount of resource on developing HTML5 (esp given that others are activly doing this)?

No.

Is the best way to do this to stick with flash and end up with no content to stream?

No.

Is the best way to move to the next best technology which is available and will work for 87% of your users...

Probably.

The fact is that MS have not said either way that they are scrapping SL, from what I have read it is supported in Win8 so will need to be supported until it comes to the end of its life (so at least 5 years) that give LF some time to play with a long term strategy for content delivery, whilst maintaining some content in the mean time.

I guess that Netfix etc are being given the same deal by the Content Providers, It will be interesting to see how they react.

Finally, What happened to moonlight?

"What are LoveFilm thinking"

David Barrett

Good point, this is exactly why I am currently living in a box for the next 10 years and trying to save 300k to buy a house outright instead of getting a mortgage...

Ok, so a house is a slightly bigger investement but the idea is the same, if you can buy outright its going to be cheaper, but thats not going to be an option for everyone.

Do I have £500 right now?

no.

If I did would I blow it all on on a phone?

No.

Would I be willing to pay a bit extra to spread the cost over 10mo - 2 yr?

Yes.

Ps. I didnt do this, I went down the middle and got a cheaper winmo phone on contract. £25 per month 18 mo, no upfront cost Probably works out at +£100 the cost of the handset over the life of the phone, but I can think of many things Id rather spend a wad of cash on in one go which win out over a phone!
