Re: I remember a time...

Thanks for the many replies but I feel you are missing my point (boy am I getting down voted for saying that!)

One day a solar flare WILL hit us hard enough to erase magnetically stored data. A quantum computer generated virus WILL disrupt and destroy precious data.

There have been floods, earth quakes and fires but ancient data still exists in the form of hieroglyphics and wall paintings. Granted we have a hard time deciphering some of it but it is still there. Why can't we follow in their footsteps?

Here are some ideas I have for data storage and recovery:

1. Light/radio/waves; Send data in packets in different light/radio frequencies out into space. Packets are picked-up by a station somewhere in space and send back to a relay and re-transmitted to said station. After the signal has been send it is no longer necessary to store data locally (it is traveling trough space) so local storage on both ends can be kept to a minimum.

2. Etching; Photosensitive etching paper made of non-corrosive materials and is of a WORM type (Write once, read multiple). Etching can be done with current printing technologies. Yes, I mean like punch cards...

3. Holographic storage; I can already hear you sighing 'No more!'. That's okay, but like I said, big companies have to get together and invest into this new technology that WILL eventually work. It is just a matter of time. It's the electric car vs the petrol car all over again. *sigh*

4. Whatever the dreamers can come up with.

I remember a time...

...when machines were purpose built and not just for the masses. Whole floors of computing devices just for specific number crunching. Things were invented because there was a need for it. Now we rely on hardware made for the masses. Storage devices with the same failure rate as the one built in a house hold PC.

Is it too much to ask for a storage device built specifically for storing large amount of data for a long time? Big companies should invest in developing new technologies instead of spending it on old-fashioned and failing ones.

Martin Huizing

I just had an idea...

How about we use existing technology to address smaller memory locations. In nand memory this wouldn't be a problem. Just a layer of addresses underneath the memory which acts like a controller (ie binary info send to one address block which will disperse the bits into the right memory lane below)

Just my two cents...

My friend has a netbook and it is getting slow as hell. I tried to convince him to buy an SSD but he still insists on buying a new notebook instead. I emailed him this article but he drew a blank. What's he going to do with access time or read/write cycles?

I doubt he will ever come across this article which should be titled; "How to convince your friend to upgrade to SSD".

In that respect you might want to put in some graphs which details about Windows boot time, movie copying and browser start speed. I think most of us here already know the benefits but it is our friends who need convincing!

Re: Makes you think though...

Yes, I agree with you. Hence me stating that I understand the situation.

I am watching 'Dr. Strangelove' as I type and I feel history is repeating itself. The Communist threat then is the North Koreans' now. I believe NK people are being oppressed, starved and ruled by a puppet master hiding behind a cloak of a giant military force ruled by but a few, but I am also aware of the continuous negativity in which NK is being portrayed. As I have never visited NK, all information I have been receiving has been from sources keen on making NK look like the worst place on earth.

A bit like Communist Russia was portrayed during the cold war, don't you think?

Before you ask, 'yes' I have seen the BBC docu on NK and I feel deeply for the people, but in war those same people would fight harder for their country then any other. They can't help it...

Martin Huizing

Makes you think though...

North Korea gets penalized for firing a rocket but when America does it (after dropping 2 nukes on civilians, has a long history of hydrogen bomb and nuke testing plus invading a country under false pretenses), nobody cares that this technology can (and will) be used in WMD's.

I get it though, really I do. I just wish big countries would stop being bullies, grow up and play nice together before we are all blown to smithereens.

To Bradley (and friends)

Don't attack the women for having low self esteem and feeling like misfits in today's society. Peer pressure, biased self image when looking at airbrushed (sorry: PS'd) anatomically correct (sorry: disproportionate) models and, of course, "my guy likes them big, so see what I got him for his birthday!" attitude.

Bradley Hardleigh-Hadderchance, you said you want to know what's going on in a woman's mind who has this kind of surgery? Some actually feel better about it afterward. Increased self awareness, more confident and more outgoing. These are not always the women that go for extremely large sizes. I have less respect for those who want to impress their man or insert an excessive amount of silicone just to show of.

For a certain group of women it helps. Others need to be informed better (educated) in an educational environment at an early age (early teens).

Interior and exterior designed in old fashioned Hobbit-ville style, complete with rounded doors and low ceilings. LOTR style wands, staffs and weaponry available for the interested. And I only have to pay 100 dollar a year to be able to do this? Where do I sign!?

Seems they don't want to get bad press before the opening of the Hobbit, in my opinion...
