Commodore launches little laptop

b
Alert

talkin' 'bout the resolution!

10" screen = good.

1gb ram = soso

HD = bad (need SSD's you muppets!)

bbbut what's da res, baby?

cheers,

bill

Samsung samples SSDs for SCCs

b
Thumb Up

bandwidth

70-90mb/s is more than enought to compete with most HD's today.

45mb/s isn't even too bad, but 25mb/s i think is a leeedle too low..i guess if all you were using your baby laptop was for browsing and emailing, that shouldn't even be a problem either.

yummy, yummy, i love SSD's!

cheers,

bill,

p.s. stuff and nonsense: http://www.eupeople.net/forum

b

winchester

the name "winchester" came from the very first hard drives being 30kb removable and 30kbs static. i think the winchester was a 0.3 cal, so that's how the name came about.

..and the term "bug", came from an actual bug that flew into an early computer..

yawwwn...i.t. mythology!

Intel roadmaps hi-speed SSDs

b
Thumb Up

240mb/s = omg!

0.25w when active?!

YES, this is progress in the storage department, FINALLY!

we can't get SSD's fast enough imo. bring it on!

b

PAH! no SSD...NEXT!

copy cat catch up..move along, nothing to see here..

no SSD, not a player i this space, imo!

baby laptop's should be SSD based not HD based. full stop!

..and the res has to get to 1024x768. at least! (need more pixels!)

cheers,

bill

b
Thumb Down

goozay munanos!

wowsa!

sexy lookin', but STILL only 600 verticle res? (hence the thumbs down!)

320Gb is good for a laptop, but not relevant for this space, imo.

it should be an SSD driven platform, these things should be SSD based with ext HD if necessary..

still think, for now, the msi wind is 'the one' (with the HP mini note a close 2nd), but we need to see what michael dell has up his sleeve ;)

BAH! should have upgraded the harrier!

was watching a prog with peter snow about the creators of the harrier, very awe inspiring stuff..

why we couldn't have simply tried to get the harrier supersonic, is beyond me. (no, really, it is).

i remember hearing how the americans used GRP and a ceramic engine to beef it up..surely we could have acheived a supersonic harrier at a fraction of the cost?

anyways..our primary medium to long term threat will be THOUSANDS upon THOUSANDS of chinese jets coming over the horizon, NOT russian ones (despite recent events, putin is merely a willet on the a*se of history), so that's what we need to prepare for.

mm NIZE!

love SSD's!

judging by the fact that the "extreme" parts only offer increased *write* speeds and not read speeds, as a tech-freak-gamer, i would not need the "extreme" version?!

cool. a few more quid to put towards a 4850X2, when they come out! ;)

love watching this space, i've got an HP TX1340EA which is a 12" slightly larger sibling to these chappies..but i'd sell it and get a good one of these, once the right spec comes along.

i want an SSD, 1024x768 res and 3 USB ports, not much to ask for?!

once that comes along, i'm getting one.

b
Thumb Up

4850X2?!

well, i never knew about the 4850X2..

judging by these prices, i'd say that the 4850X2 could be a real winner..

imo, the single card solution is an 8800GT (at £85 is a joke considering what it can do), or a 9800GTX or a 4870.

if you MUST go multiple, as what seems to be currently the widely held view, 2 x 4850's in SLI is the way to go.

to that end, obviously a 4850X2 would give punters a single card solution.

btw, someone told me that the 4870X2 needs 410w of power. wtf.

b
Go

oops, the 4870X2 was just released..

missed that little puppy eh?!

reports of average 25% gains over the GTX280 and peaks of 50%.

it should be noted that you can now get the rather excellent 8800GT (G92 core) for around £80 now, which is incredible value.

you can also get a 4850 for around £115 and a 4870 for around £180 (as spotted on amazon, but that's not a recommendation, just a point of reference, tho personally i do like buying from them). tho looking at this chart, i'd say the 8800GT for £80, which tucks in quite close to the 9800gtx and 4870, was the real steal when it came to budget gaming and what i'd recommend in this time frame.

personally i've got a 9800GTX, which is a nice stable card which i got for about £180.

2x4850's in SLI seems to be the generally accepted current fave setup for power/value for gaming...for now..tho single card i'd go for 8800GT/4870 depending on budget..

bill

we need a moon base.

most of the weight of crafts leaving this fair planet is made up of the fuel needed to escape our heavy gravity and atmosphere.

if we can stop international conflicts (good luck with THAT one!) and redirect the OBSCENE amounts of money and efforts spent on killing our fellow man (miltary budgets), we could already BE on the moon exploring space from there.

Alert

128mb of memory and 2gb of storage?! = what a MONSTER!

ok, so not bad looking little fella, 7" is a bit small (missus!), 840x480 is a bit low..but 128mb of memory?!

2gb of STORAGE?!

ok, ok, i know external usb2 drives are peanuts these days (we ARE spoilt) and non microsoft products are seemingly devoid of the need to consume whatever is around, but i think we could have perhaps settled on 512mb, considering all that these baby laptops are expected to do and maybe 8-12gb of local storage i think would have sufficed.

why not, somehow, attach some sort of balloon system that can reduce the weight of it all, then you will need less power to get going?

Dell to launch MP3 player, claims mole

b
Thumb Up

cool, should be good.

all i'd like to add is that it should have decent recording capabilities.

i just got a creative zen 4gb and it only records at 160k max (in the wma format) and that isn't really good enough for me. (apart from that it's not a bad little toy)..

i'd like at least 320k mp3, but preferrably wav/aif (uncompressed) format.

i've loked everywhere and so few of these "mp3 players" record from a line in. most have microphone in, but no line.

nice!

the march to lower power consumption continues..

most people don't need much more than this anyway..

quite bizarre retailers punting out these quad cores for machines that don't really run much software that can use it..it's just a waste of power! (i.e. "redundant power")

dell always seem to know where the button is, even if they don't hit it every single time..they hit it more than most, imo.

Brits terrified of online fraud, but want magic cars, says BT

b

who was on the web 10 years ago?!

...that and:

was there even such a thing as "online fraud" 10 years ago?

simple answer is to only buy off retailers you can trust. you wouldn't (or SHOULDN'T) give your cc details to dodgy restaurants and shops, so why do it online?

also if you have online banking (even with the absolutely DREADFUL barclays), you can check your accounts every other day or so and keep an eye on what's going on, rather than waiting a month or 3 for the paper statements to arrive.
