The problem with IB
IB HCAs - (DDR, QDR, FDR) what type of interface slot do these connect into ?
PCIe (X4, X8, X16). Still requires a driver to load, work with kernel calls etc.
NVMe provides common set of "tools" over PCIe. Violin was one of the first to provide direct-attached storage via PCIe. It is a core component to their arrays today. What DSSD is already providing is very promising. The others, they are still evaluating how to bring the tech to market. .
