HD TV in the UK

Liam

hmmmm

also virgin media offfers HD films for only £3-4 (unsure on price) but they can at least stream HD content and decent audio, plus the content isnt using your BB line so shouldnt affect your monthly caps/limits etc

@ Wize - "I've not seen anywhere showing HDTV next to an equally large TV on standard def to let me compare the two pictures. Afterall, if its good, it should speak for itself". best ive seen for comparison was when i forgot to record robin hood on v+. so we had to get a SD version. it looked pants compared to the HD one we had just watched!

of course its not all good. the little blonde on heroes doesnt look as cute in HD. its not as forgiving as DVD/SD

@ Sooty - phone up virgin and see what deals you get. remember with virgin you own the box and there isnt a monthly fee for it. i even moved the sd box into the bedroom for £5 month. my cousin got v+ for £70. i usually find an excuse to moan about something and they always do you some form of deal :)

the HD is much more complex to get working... took my guy about 30 odd mins and various calls to the centre to get HD working etc...

"Virgin has tv on demand, the ability to record your shows to a hard drive isn't really as big a selling point as it is with sky)" - BUT on demand is buggy and problematic... V+ works fine 99.9% of the time. plus you can get anything - rather than just what is selected. it kicks sky's ass too as you can record 3 things at once, or record 2 and watch 1...

the delay TV is also pretty good. me and the mrs rarely watch live tv as i can skip adverts in recorded programs :)

@ Jose Cardoso - my bad - i know they deffo didnt stream in 5.1 initially. maybe they do now... i know there is optical so it should be able to!

@ richyS - "the leap in quality from SD to HD is just not there. The bandwidth is too restricted to show off the benefits of HD. Just those MPEG artifacts in all their high def glory!" - wtf? have you seen HD? no artifacts on virgin HD content. obviously you now see more in SD (itv looks pants) but thats mainly by using large TVs

@ "I think no-one offers full 1080p HD TV in the UK yet it's all just 720p TV." - wtf? ive had a 1080p dogs danglies TV since before xmas.... where have you been? i also dont see the point in 720p - stop being tight and get a proper one.. would you say "i would get a 1600x1200 monitor but the 1024x768 will be the same" ?!?!?! and if you mean nobody offers 1080i (cant get p over tv really), yes they do ... v+ offers 1080i signal.

the difference between HD and SD shows greatly when watching sports. i always sigh now when footy is on itv over bbc. the quality is so much better, esp since the compression on itv1 seems to be getting worse and worse!

also need to mention that apple tv is stereo sound only. wheras bbc HD is dolby digital (MUUUUUCH better... footy is great in 5.1 :))

you also need to consider that hd uses up moch more HD space. a 1 hour HD broadcast uses up 5 hours of space on my v+ box, but it doesnt seem to compress or alter sound so you get an exact copy of what you record.

also we are so far behind US due to their SD being MASSIVELY worse quality that english SD broadcasting, so they really needed it more :)

now, if c4 and itv HD come to virgin i will be well happy :)

also, if phorm knows content browsed by IP (i know they claim not to know but i dont believe them), wont they simply work with the BPI and forward this accross? or do i need to read up on phorm a bit more?

bloody yanks (how many times a year do we say this??)

the problem seems to be that in the USA you can copyright anything. the people in charge obviously dont understand tech and think that by simply taking 2 existing technologies and sticking them together you own a new type of tech. you simply dont!

im going to copyright a new system where your house uses hydrogen cells. there we go. massively vague and fucks up anyone in the future (as we all know hydrogen cells are our saviour, hopefully)

all that will happen is that the USA will become a 3rd world country (even more) as tech firms refuse to release anything in the US for fear of petent infringement.

UK gov publishes 'kids and videogames' action plan

Liam
Coat

hmmmm

gotta love the yanks...

sat there polishing their guns and wondering if its video games that cause violence in society.

i think that a rating system would be good for games. we dont want little kiddies playing manhunt do we? the problem is that in the UK almost all games that should be rated ARE rated. so... wtf is this £9m going to do? write 1 bit of legislation to force shops to adhere to the law? (£9m???)

the fact is that most kids are more tech savvy than there parents (i have been since i was about 7 and worked out the video recorder - its been downhill since then!) and that a lot of parents are just bad parents.

i had loads of dodgy things when i was a 'yoof' that my parents didnt know about. so expecting parents to keep such a close eye on the kids is impossible. also teenagers need their privacy... not having parents 'spin' their bedrooms for contraband (would be like shawshank redemption!)

imho this is just a waste of £9m. since schools teach so little nowadays (grammar, spelling, maths, english etc) why not do all this at school? why do the usual and waste £9m on crap adverts and useless brochures?

Spain plans 'human rights' for great apes

Liam
Coat

hmmm

some interesting ideas here..

personally from the country in europe with about the worst animal rights i think this is taking the piss. killing animals in barbaric ways is entertainment for these people. the fact that the pussies slash bulls' tendons so they cant run makes it even worse. ah well they all dress like julian clary anyway :)

"Animals *don't* have rights until they can express those rights themselves"

- interesting. you go to some far flung corner of the globe, can you express your rights to them? to them you will just sound like a babbling ape. plus we all know there are plenty of apes than can use sign language and communicate quite well in other ways. wheras there are plenty of people with learning difficulties who cannot. and plenty of plain stupid people who can be outwitted by a monkey (some beat real people in IQ tests)

its a conundrum innit?

its a good step but its like saying a murderer has just decided its not going to kill men, just keep killing women imho.

@ tim

"I also have a Wii. Never use it.....ever.....it is rubbish.....so why is it so popular?.....beats me......" - ditto.. multiout? i use optical into my Av amp.. wish id waited a year to get the HDMI swapping AV amps now, but to be honest i like having screen and sound separate.

i just bought the mrs a nintendo ds.. lets me use the TV for GTA and footy more :) plus braintraining is fun (was hammered last night and i was apparently 71 years old brain age! lmao although in my fairness we couldnt figure out one game and she told me it wasnt against the clock lol!)

@ "Seriously, everyone knows PC gaming is best anyway..." - not really. imho consoles and PCs suit different games. i find using the ps3 hard for proper fps games (used to play bf2142 to death and was in top 100 on original UT once upon a time! :)) - maybe im too far from my big tv but i find it much easier to see enemies when im 18" from a 20" TFT. plus mouse and keys suit fps (not a fan of mmorpg). wheras sports games like football (im a pro evo boy) are crap on a pc... also PCs generally have shite controllers for thing type of thing, whereas the ps controllers always rocked and had enough buttons to do what was needed (pc controllers never had enough buttons - maybe do now tho!).

xbox and ps3 both do similar games. xbox seems to be more fps bases wheras ps3 seems aimed at adventure, puzzle and more sports style games. not much in it but my dvd player died so it seemed the logical upgrade path (or so i told the mrs lol)

and my console is bigger - i still have my old bbc model b with the viglen kit - its frikkin massive :) ahh that massive 32k memory! rock on!

Liam
Flame

is this just

in my experience xboxes are owned by younger people and playstations by older (20+)

playstation was the console that made gaming cool again. i remember getting my psx when i was about 21 after not gaming for years. of course this has changed now with wii etc.

ps3 is aimed at 20somethings imho. maybe why we see so many xbox idiots come to these forums (although plenty of psx idiots too lol)

UK game-development degrees not up to snuff, claims industry

Liam

but...

erm... game design isnt all about code and comp science. sure you need the game engine but these days 3dmodelling, texturing, story, script writing, character development, sound all need filling too. the coders are usually the ones that just sit writing classes all day while everyone else does the creative stuff (how many code monkeys with any design skills do you see?)

also in this day and age a lot more is focussed on look and feel and there are shit-loads of 3d modellers and artists out there!

if we just relied on coders for games they might run well but would all look like shite

i would also imagine that most positions in gaming are filled by talented people rather than educated people. everyone knows most computing related courses arent worth the paoper they are written on. a lot of computer science people cant even build a pc ffs lol!

and i guess wii is holding everyone back due to the technology (apart from the controllers) being 5 years old. nothing bleeding edge in wii games really

Force listeners onto DAB by killing FM

Liam

if they kill off FM

thats the death of radio...

im already sick of how many millions of the TV LICENSE goes to RADIO presenters! its a joke!

the fact is people dont want DAB its shittier signal and hard to get too... whats the need? FM works fine for most.

if i need to listen to radio at home i use the V+ box as its hooked up to a big AV amp anyway.

kill off dab and stop us all subsidising technology that nobody wants!

BT and Siemens slammed over prisoner call rates

@ M

"....WTF is that the prisoner having moblie phone!"

wtf? maybe you need remedial reading/writing course before getting on your high horse mate. i guess since almost everyone here speeds that we should all be locked up for breaking the law! remember just because someone is in jail and might be a bad guy, they also have families and kids (Often lots of kids). you need to allow dads to call their familes once a week! you lot really do sound like a bunch of nazis today!

and btw - its smack inside not dope, to do with 28 days leaving your system over 2/3 days. the problem is we are CREATING heroine users in jail. not helping anyone!

maybe we should be looking at why BT can put in a phone system in a jail a DAMN SITE cheaper than the ripoff hospital phone company can. i guess some labour cronies got their mates a good deal on that one eh! we shouldnt be penalising conns for hospitals ripping patients off.. thats totally unfair and completely unrelated!

and btw - from my experience only a handful of jails let cons have TVs. most conns are locked up 23 hours a day and maybe get 4 hours/week of TV and being able to use the phone

didnt realise how many fascists we have in here. gotta admit im dissapointed. so much for the rehabilitation route eh.

i dont know ANYONE who is better outside than inside. you lot really ought to stop reading the papers you know.

remember is hospital you get to have visits. not just once a month so you need to keep in touch with family somehow! you are also not sent to hospitals 200 miles away just to fuck you up like the jail service do

remember that you can now get sent down for the following henus crimes:

:: not paying unfair council tax (i.e. how they manage to force payments from people who are unemployed or students)

:: smoking 'killer' weed

:: demonstrating peacefully

now, i know that a lot of people in prison are baaad people, but there also pseudo political prisoners, such as those related to drug offences..

having 20 pills on me got me 18months in a class A jail (rapists, paedos, murderers and psychos). this is all for a substance that is less dangerous than alcohol (read lancet reports et al) and kills less people a year in this country than peanuts do at xmas!

so, not all people deserve to be killed or left to rot like you lot seem to think.

oh, and according to you lot we should have killed off stephen fry and many other people we like than have been in clink

dont worry... mine's flameproof

Liam

Virgin Media rubbishes P2P throttling rumours

Liam
Flame

hmmm

@ Mark

what planet are you on... playing games uses same bandwidth as P2P leechers? my arse mate. what the hell games are you playing?

the simple fact is that the P2P and usenet crowd have screwed it for us all (i used to use p2p but cant be arsed now)

people like the one above constantly dling 200gb of warez a month (cos you surely arent obtaining 200gb of legitimate content...) are the reason we have throttling.

we are all to blame. we all just hammered napster back in the day dling anything that sounded good.

GTA IV website prompts outrage

Liam

pah ffs

@ too far - you sum it up mate - you havent played the game and to be honest havent even read anything anyone has written OR the article.

the fact it says that there is a link to a dodgy sounding site. you click the link and there is a police warning - clicking again prompts a massive police response and you will, no doubt, be killed in a few seconds (5* is now rock on this game compared to otehr versions)

you see... its saying this is what happens when you do something THIS bad! if the generally savvy people here cannot grasp simple things then how the hell are daily heil readers going to?

@ "Cheers Mark, I thought the 360 version was better. I notice you can't even make out the people in the shop on the PS3 version and a lot of detail is lost. The only thing the PS3 version seems to do better is the text on the sign at the top but everything else is a lot less clear and far more blurred. Presumably this is down to the lower resolution, the PS3 just can't bang out enough pixels like the 360 can." - wtf? the 2nd image looks wayyy better than the first! cant you see this? the lack of colour depth (360 looks like a GIF ffs lol) and complete lack of anti-aliasing?!?! im sure the ps3 could whack out at 1080p if they used no AA and 16bit colour depths... BUT this isnt a console debait is it! why do xboxers always crash ps3 threads?

now, the fact is that this is a tiny pic blown up. the fact is that both games look pretty good on both consoles, but compared to my other ps3 games the graphics are, imho, sadly lacking.

@ "I like the fact that you have spoken about the Mandatory install the the makers of GTA4 complained about and are on record saying they spent alot of time with sony trying to get a fix to this problem and yet sony wont be able to fix said problem for sometime." - wtf? then they are retards at rockstar... every other game for the ps3 i have seems to do an install somehow so why the hell cant rockstar get ot working properly...

@ David Gibson - mate - seems we all missed this too. i totally agree. i find the USA's fascination with dressing little girls like cheap hookers sickening. also the kids and parents all seem unbearably annoying. i do feel sorry for the kids, having parents like they do!

@ "And there we have it. Another case of HD sources require HD output. Sounds simple, but it's another case of putting the cart before the horse. All this Blu-Ray and HD malarkey is sold as a revolutionary solution to a terrible problem that, in reality, didn't/doesn't truly exist. Only one step away from punting a hardware reliant OS in order to push hardware sales (hello Microsoft)." - you seem to have lost what a HDMI cable can do mate. if like me the poster went from an Sd to a HD TV the differnce CAN be massive. the game is made in HD and downscaled to SD for none-HD people. this means distortion of the image. also SD cannot handle the massive array of colours that HDMI 1.3 spec can bring. so therefore you have better image quality and much better colour depth. i will agree though that SD on a ps3 isnt that good. simple things like you cannot output RGB via scart to an SD TV for movies! and the fact the refresh rates seem locked at 30fps in SD rather than 60fps + in HD. i do agree with Sun and Hail comments tho :)

@ "...So it's fine to run drugs, murder people, and gang rape 'ho's' " - wtf? i dont see any gang-raping hos in this game.. to my knowledge you pay for them to get onboard...

Devil dog laughs in the face of Taser

Liam

fair cop guv!

ok, just done some research, no dogs jaws can lock

BUT im right in thinking that the pressure staffies and pitbulls can exert are MASSIVE compared to normal dogs.. this comes through fight breeding...

some facts:

A Pit Bull bite is three times worse than a Rottweilers.

A Rottweilers has 800psi (Pounds Per Squire Inch Jaw Pressure).

A Bull Terrier has 1200psi,

A pit bull’s bite force is 2000+ psi plus.

A Pit Bull does not lock its jaw as do other dogs, but it lower jaw scissors back and forth to rend flesh from the bone.

Pit Bulls are bred from Staffordshire Bull Terriers – Gaining their incredible musculature - and Bull Mastiffs Gaining a Cold-Hearted lack of emotion and Phenomenal resistance to pain.

i knew there was something special with the jaw but i think the old wives tale of the locking misguided me. its the fact they have a different motion that cleaves meat from the bone... unlike any other dog...

wow! must get one of these as a pet... and let a gary glitter do my babysitting too!

ive always though the no chocolate for dogs was an odd one. sinice our last 2 dogs had plenty of chocolate and lived to 17 and 18 respectively. a lot longer than many dogs!

Liam

hmmm

i guess they msut have thought the dog was brazillian :)

the thing is you see these retards time and time again. my little <insert chavvy dog name> (i used to know a coke dealer who had a little white one called Charlie! sigh) is fine. he's lovely.

sorry, but bollocks. these types of dog were bread for fighting. hence the fact you cannot get their jaws unlocked. there is simply no place in society for this type of fighting dog.

@ "I grew up with Staffordshire bull terriers. They are incredibly soft soppy things that wouldn't harm a fly (other than by sheer stupidity or not knowing their own strength)" - ive had this argument with my mrs - whose parents have a massive german shep (stands about 4ft high and over 6ft on back legs!). they MIGHT be normally nice and soft, its the fact that if provoked they can and will kill/maim. its not even the dogs fault. a good example is when i first when round the mrs' parents' house and was basically told not to make any alarming sudden movements or play fight with the mrs... as this dog will rip me a new arse hole! he is just protecting her, i know that.

for me the fact that this animal can do serious damage means it shouldnt be in the hands of none-trained people - like police dog handlers etc. there are plenty of smaller dogs which make much better pets and dont have locking jaws. as far as im concerned any dog of this type that hurts anyone, the owener should be directly responsible. e.g if a dog rips my arm up - do the owner with a section 47/abh/gbh.

btw - im a big dog person - love em, but some dogs arent meant for pets.

next thing we will hear is that the dog had been smoking 'killer' skunk! or even worse, it was a polish staffy! :)

@ "Seriously - don't threaten a dog, or a member of it's pack, and it won't bite you." bollocks mate! sorry but thats such bollocks its not even worth going into! some dogs are just as bad as some people...

1,076 developers, 15 years, one open-source Wine

@ "I have found it often runs heavy number crunch stuff faster than in windows, Games like HL2, Guildwars run straight out of the box."

i would hesitate a guess that this is due to linux not supporting all the fancy AA and AF modes on games, since linux drivers arent a priority for nvidia/amd. how does it work on directx? since thats the main dev platform these days since opengl lost pace

does wine run photoshop and clone dvd properly? cos thats about all i use at home!

and please dont say use gimp - its like comparing a ferrari to a fiat panda :)

hmmmm

@ "To those who voted these f***ers in: do you still believe you won? Don’t you instead feel like we are the laughing stock of the world?"

erm... i still seem to remember joyfully voting out the wankers who sold everything off.. its almost like everyone seems to think that the tories were wonderous before.. i think sometimes we forget how bad things used to be also... do the blues hand out rose tinted specs? :)

thats not me saying im pro labour... i just remember when we owned rail, comms and hospitals before they were all sold off... remember that tories dont really help anywhere north of watford (especially if you arent white and middle/upper class)! oh and lets not forget the massive interest rates of the 80s when my parent and a lot of others almost lost everything.

the big issue is what do we do next?...

useless reds

dont earn enough for conservative to benefit me and they arent much better from memory

lib dems could make everything even worse (£900/year road tax my arse!)

the problem we have is that 3 useless sets of idiots are all we have to choose from.

cant we just get stephen fry to be PM and let everything else fit in place :)

as said before it seems hard to punish people for the rubbish that is created. for example. i am a good consumer.. i buy plenty of stuff.. unfortunately that stuff comes is massive oversized boxes... now, with me paying a nice amount of VAT for all this shit, isnt the cost of recycling included in the VAT?

we have just let the tories in round here.. back to weekly black bin collections (sigh). the only people that moaned about the lack of weekly collections were the ones who didnt recycle really. my black bin goes out every few months, wheras the recycle bin always seems full but its only fortnightly

Liam
Black Helicopters

ffs... anyone can see the massive problems this will cause...

1) i have to put my bins out at 7:45 am, before i go to work. the bins then sit there an hour or so before the bin men come. any bastard can stick whatever they like in my bin and i know nothing about it!

2) i recycle a lot so my black bin hardly ever goes out. will they be able to get an average of my yearly tippage? how will they take into account such things?

3) whats to stop someone just throwing litter into my bin whilst unattended? it could even be none-malicious but i can get fined for it!

4) whats to stop the always useless binmen from dumping their shit into our bins?

5) what if its pissing down with rain, my house is about 10 mins walk from a school, i can see the kids flipping back all the bin lids to let them fill with water so we all get screwed...

6) its hard to be annoyed with people who do not recycle after finding my council (Lincoln) wasnt recycling lots and was, in fact, dumping it. WE then get fined by the GOV through council tax hikes due to this council's shite behaviour!

this is just a farce! what next? scanning our sewage to see if we have been smoking 'killer' skunk or 'binge drinking' (when i was younger we had binge drinking - it was the fucking weekend!)

so, the question is.... do all politics degress come with a lobotomy?

ahhh fuck the black choppers!

just fired off an email to SONY...

'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''

It has recently come to my attention that Sony is to start pushing dynamic ads on the PS3.

From the comments I have read you seem to think that the public will be fine about this. Let me tell you that this went down EXTREMELY badly in the PC gaming World. Many people have fled from EA games due to this ridiculous inclusion of adverts. For example playing a futuristic shooting game you suddenly see an advert for Intel Core Duo!. This totally ruins the experience!

We have already spent £40 on a game… (far more than anywhere else in the world!), you then seem to think it will be ok to force adverts upon us. This simply isnt something you should do… I havent paid £400 for an advert delivery system! I am also annoyed that valuable bandwidth will be lost due to your advertising.

I have to say that myself and many of my employees will look into getting rid of our PS3s and look into the much cheaper x-box if this does go ahead!

Adverts are used to deliver FREE content… people do NOT pay for adverts (which you seem to think will be ok!) I think you will lose the respect of MANY people by doing this. It is in effect greedy and unneeded, how would you feel if suddenly your car started displaying adverts across the dashboard? technically you shouldn’t change a device after it has been bought as you are altering its purpose.

You may also want to check your small print as these systems were sold without dynamic ads, including them now is, in effect, a change to the system that we have already paid for. This amounts to a dynamic change of contract. And I am sure you will see people dynamically demanding a refund for a £400 advert player

I will be doing my best to see this stopped and will start lobbying online gaming forums, as well as consulting someone legally about the alteration in service you propose.

'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''

i also just thought about this... what about kids? do we really want our kids to be even more brainwashed from adverts? let them all be turned into braindead american kids?!?! :(

Liam

LIES LIES DAMN LIES...

i used to play a cool game called battlefield 2142... set in... 2142..

that was until intel decided to place adverts in EA's game...

so, you guessed it, running around in a post futuristic apolcalyptic setting... and seeing adverts for intel core duo?!?!?!

wtf!

1) i have paid for a game.... why the hell can they then force adverts onto me!

2) 'enjoyed the same or more' wtf? i seriously cannot imagine ANY gamers saying.. 'its more fun with adverts'

now, if they talk about the fake adverts in games like GTA then thats fine - its not real and they are funny... 'crusty brown's ring donuts' etc are class :)

for me, this is a really simple get out clause.. buy a game, if its shite take it back. then moan that i dont PAY to see ads.

now, if games were delivered free with adverts (like ITV and US TV) thats not so bad. but to charge people to see ads (buy game and console) is just wrong!

Blu-ray ramp beats DVD up-take in Europe

Liam

hmmm

@ martin usher...

"Since the improvement in quality is slight" - wtf? for me its bigger than video to dvd (since i had a very good vhs player and my first dvd player was bobbins). the problem is lots of people have el cheapo 720i 'HD' tvs but then dont see the difference between that and PAL...

on a decent player with a good 1080p TV the difference is MASSIVE! even the audio sounds much crisper - and i have a decent AV system too...

mind you tho... i have a VM V+ box that can stream HD movies. and unlike the (cr)apple tv (sorry - rip off for what it is, and no surround sound?!?! wtf!) it support PROPER DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 too... just realised i havent even had a go on that yet! prices seem pretty cheap compared to other sources too... plus i guess it uses the box's bandwidth so not limiting my daily quota :)

Liam
Thumb Up

first bluray

well, after me moaning about the price of BR media, i got home last night and play.com had sent me the alrt that transformers is now available on BR :) so i bought it. it was the first film i wanted to buy when i got my ps3 but the studio were refusing to release on BR as it was a HDDVD backer.

the thing is very few titles will benefit from 1080p (new james bond looks really grainy), but having been to the cinema to watch the film and forgetting my glasses meant i misses a lot of detail, that i can now try to see :)

Liam

hmmm

@ Mark

"Blu Ray is rubbish - HD-DVD FTW!" - erm... the blueray spec actually yields better image and audio quality over HD DVD... just wanted to clear that up! now, im not sure if movies on HD will really take off... remember how many nay sayers there were when DVD first came out (i seem to remember ps2 using dvd heavily and all the experts said how shit it was and would never take off)

also, who the hell will PAY for downloaded films. ITUNES seems already a damn site more expensive than play.com et all, and then you have to wait hours to download a HD quality (stereo!!! and i bet 720p!!) version. of course, this still doesnt explain the fact you have NO CAPITOL... i.e you cannot sell the film if its shite, or lend it to people (which is illegal i bet lol)

so, pay more, get less and pay for the delivery system too...

BD is new, like DVD was - which was bloody expensive remember! lots of people are still using shitty old TVs or simply dont have the eyes/ears to see/hear the difference...

i must admit - i still dont own a BD disk. too expensive and waiting for some films to really show it off! im more interested in HD football on BBC HD channel at the mo! BUT my ps3 is on almost every day!

So how is that linked to religion then?" - thats just due to most academics being shunned by society, they often specialise so heavily in a specific area that they fail to grasp such basics as a sense of humour and social skills. a lot of academics (from experience) also have little or no common sense...

i think the thing is now that we can actually have a good stab at how it all started... rather than like in days or yore when our ancient cousins thought things like volcanoes were gods to be feared etc...

when arguing with a god botherer they still often fail to believe that evolution exists (we can PROVE it ffs lol) are seem blinkered into this religeous brainwashing

@ By JonB

"Announcing a paper that demonstrates that Muslim fundamentalists are stupid.." - erm, arent these the same 'brainboxes' that seem to think the way to win a war is to let one of your side kill themselves and hopefully take out 1 or 2 of the enemy. yeah - proper clever them lot eh? :) they also go heavily against their own religion (murder/suicide) to try and tell us how bad we are...

now all we need to do is rid our government of this foreign religeous nutter eh? :)

@ han Hartman - "Then why is that every atheist I have ever met has been a very low IQ prat that pretends to know everything?" i think in this day and age MOST of english society is athiest (im not talking of the immigrants here as we know many come from religious backgrounds). i know of very few people now that would call themselves religious. many people will say they are unsure, mainly i guess to hedge their bets.

@ By Hywel Thomas - "atheism and cake ?" - IM AN ATHIEST (since i was about 5!) and i love cake... hmmmm maybe you are onto something :)

some good news....

im a 2mb virgin media customer... conenction has been a bit shite lately so i called them to have a moan. for an extra £4 month i have gone from 2mb to 4mb, which is being upgraded to 10mb next wek for free :) BONUS!

ofcom suck... im so sick of companies being able to outright lie and get away with this type of thing. yet i smoke some lethal weed and im a menace to society and should get 3 years lol...

is it me or has labour seemingly allowed business to run a mock (zero accountability / tiny fines), where we all seem to have no civil liberties any more?

hmm no thanks!

HD quality? is this from the same people that call divx DVD quality? also apple dont support surround as far as i know...

so, they are charging the same if not more than Blockbuster etc, for a copy you have to download (ooh 50gb over english Bband - that will be fun), with considerably worse sound and no extras (so maybe 40 gb?)

wow, where do i dign up.. glad i didnt waste any money on an apple tv box

its not like the 60gb model will be able to hold much HD content is it?

@ abe...

shite... someone with an actually decent spec'd media centre lol... fair enough... most ive seen have been pretty piss poor to be honest. in fact most people who have had them have sacked them off and gone back to seperates etc... i know the ps3 cannot handle some filetypes (OGG and FLAC for the time being but to be honest i can convert them anyway)

i would love to have all my movies on HD too but storage isnt THAT cheap yet :) 1000+ dvds = lots of petabytes lol. plus my media centre plays ps3 games :) so i need access to it...

fair play on the 9800 - not sure if my 8800 has 1.3 on it... never liked the output of movies from PCs.. although my tv does make a nice big monitor when hooked up... does the 9800 have hdmi out or via a convertor... hdmi on gfx cards would be cool :)

above mid end yammie... hmmm £500 was my limit :) not sure i would spend into the thousands on an amp (when i say mid range i mean in the 400 - 1000 bracket - not the cheapo £250 ones)

mann, can i borrow your bouncy castle? :) its the only thing i missing (apart from the mammoth but my elephant is good enough :))

you still fail to answer some of my HD related questions but i think we have had enough on this one :) lets put our toys away now :)

@ Abe

ok, so your fancy gfx card can do 24fps pulldown then can it? dont think so... also i doubt you can output lossless HD audio (via some creative'esque soundcard?) and are you running 1080p resolution? also what audio connections are you using? optical?. and i guess your PC isnt hdmi 1.3 spec is it? that means i get MILLIONS more colours than you running via (i guess) component rather than hdmi 1.3. for £300 you cannot do better than a ps3 for all this. coupled with a mid end yammie 7.1 amp and mordaunt short 7.1 speakers (not shitty sattelites) i doubt your media centre sounds a patch on mine to be honest mate!

plus when YOU want to watch a movie you have to go to the cupboard etc... not really user friendly is it? and dont tell me your movies are all on that 2tb drive as that wouldnt cope with 10% of my dvd collection. what HD drive are you running? blueray or HDDVD?

Liam

@ Scott

"My PC / Media Centre deals with that side of things and would do it a daNm site better thAn a PS3 would"

erm... I dont think so matey - ps3 HDMI upscaling whips a pc upscaling outputting via a VGA cable.. also most people dont want a bloody great pc in their lounge, having mice and keyboards etc to control everything. my media center is attached to the ps3 (usb 1/2 tb drive) i can control this very quickly with the neat bluetooth controller (works outside so when im getting hammered in the garden i can still change tracks). i have always found DVDs on a PC look crap compared to a dedicated player... never knew why but even my 8800GTS doesnt compare to the ps3s quality!

i do think achievements might be a good idea - so i can look back and see whats ive done over x time for example... but im not fussed with online chat etc - you just get more numpties shouting down their mics like on an x-box...

wtf is all this shite about the ps3 not having games? we have everything you have apart from a couple of games (halo - yawn - FPS are for PC - who wants to play 8v8 on a joypad ffs!) etc... plus a host of games you dont get to have (MGS, gran turismo, drakes fortune etc) this is all very childish 'my dads bigger than your dad' etc... (my dad is only 5'7" so its not one i could ever use lol)

now, lets just accept that some of us prefer PS3 to xbox and lets roll with it shall we?

hmmmm

how many people have SEEN the difference though?

my parents are both in their 60s - they wont notice the difference as they have a cheapo tosh HD tv (probably 720p) and their eyesight isnt as good as it was.

i mean some people didnt get how much better quality DVD was over VHS.. that said i had a top end VHS player that was bloody decent if the VHS was of good quality. compare this to people using £20 DVD players that really dont do films justice

now, i have a top end tosh 1080p Tv with all the bells and whistles and the differnce to me is MASSIVE! ok, its not always good, the cheerleader in HEROES isnt as cute in HD! also i love the fact that the bbc HD channel is mainly in DOLBY DIGITAL too... so proper 5.1 over stereo is nice :)

i must admit i dont own and BD media yet.. its expensive and only certain types of film really warrant HD. when the prices drop and you can 'backup' for a low enough price (good blank dvd media is only ~ 20-30p!) i will look more into it.

of course the yanks will buy into HD quicker than the brits as we have PAL and then have the awful NTSC.... (never the same coloUr twice :))

@ - Jess

"I have a 1600 x 1200 LCD panel with DVI and S-video inputs. The resolution is enough beyond double 720 x 575 to look good on PAL signals. (Nyquist and all that).

HD's 1080 lines is less than double PAL's 575 so PAL is not going to look ideal if I were to get a new screen"

thats why you need a proper TV and not a monitor. also that res is 4:3 - wheras 1080p is 16:9 format. i must admit i dont use the video through my AV amp as sometimes i like to listen to music while watching tv etc...

as someone else said, the original quality is the most important thing. i have over 1000 dvds, the vast majority of which arent good enough to be on HD media as the original film stock is very grainy... its a lot less forgiving than SD media. BUT with recent knowledge all new filming should be shot on decent equipment without the grain. things like BBCs robin hood look VASTLY better in HD over SD

remember tho, HD is only as good as the media you play it on. using a budget player and a £400 Tv you wont notice the difference as much. but with a decent tv (1.3 hdmi, image stabilisation, high contrast ratio, full 1080p etc) you will get a better image. also HD sound is noticably better quality through a decent audio setup

all the stuff about price is amusing... i remember paying £20 for a dvd 8 years ago - the price drops as more people buy and manufacturing costs lessen

@ - Andy Bright - DLP? ewww never seen a decent quality DLP tv and the viewing angles were always bad... unless you have a few £000 one that is.. i cetainly prefer my 42" 7.1 setup to the cinema as i can smoke a phatty and pause when i need to pee... plus my sound is far superior and the screen (i sit about 5ft from my screen) is about the same size relatively

@ john - "Mines the one with the built in OLED, HDDVD player and 7.2 surround - cause I GOTTA have the latest thing." - 10.1 or 9.1 is the next big thing lol.... i think its way off as 10.1 and 9.1 are quite different setups :) 7.1 is fine for me! and to be honest most movies cannot even take 7.1 properly lol, i think 6.1 is the best i have. but 7 channel stereo sounds great in my lounge :)

remember VHS kind of died out as all its content (mostly) was in 4:3 format... a lot of us have had widescreen TVs for years... plus the increase in audio (stereo to 5.1 etc)

@ Bigwookie - no HDMI for 4 months? wtf you playing at? i hope you didnt get ripped and pay a ton for a super hdmi cable too - any old hdmi will do - its not like analogue where cable quality is king. 0 and 1 travel down almost any cables without problems! :)

@ Who is surprised? - "their superior sales of standalones showed an ability to appeal to a wider market" - thats cos loads of us bought PS3s... if you take PS3s into acount BD hammered HDDVD...

enough of my thesis :)

as a 33 year old who has been playing games most of his life i know the positive effects of games.

1) driving games help you appreciate things like skids in cars - most newbie drivers dont understand you steer into skids etc.. but games know :)

2) my hand to eye coordination is better than most people 10 years younger than me

3) i can have a shitty day at work, come home, boot up gta iv and have some random violence. others will just lamp smack someone on the way home from work

4) SOME online games help teamwork etc...

@ Monkey

the problem with dvd-a is the fact that so few people make them - especially the ones you want! a lot or artists arent well enough produced to even warrant it i guess (some official albums sound worse than crap quality mp3s!)

i must admit i tend to listen to music via the 7 channel stereo feature my amp supports - rather than trying to get it to fudge surround (even though dolby prologic 2x through a yamaha enhancer sounds very good - just not for music) 7 channel stereo gives me a wall of sound and makes the vocal pop nicely out of my lovely centre speaker :)

@ Nexox Enigma

i agree most people cannot setup 5.1 to save their lives - my lounge is setup perfectly for this type of thing. everything is setup up for watching movies and listening to music from my couch... also helps my yammie amp has a nice little setup that worksm out reverb etc from a little mic. i do have to disagree with the size of a sweet spot tho. if you get decent speakers (mordaunt short 7.1 setup here) the sweet spot is massive compared to the little sony satellite system i had before. i dont even mind not sitting in the 'daddy chair' sometimes now :) of course having the right shaped room helps a lot

anyone else welcome this?

the UK press is a bunch of hypocritcal wankers.

the same red tops that consistently try to get celebs and us screwed over drug usage are all massive coke-heads (i know someone who works for a well known weekend red-top and they are all into the nose-candy)

also isnt it the mirror and the mail that are the biggest pains in the arse? the mail pushing their fascist views and the mirror just lieing all the time to ruin people's lives. readers of both should takea long hard look at themselves...

for me if any paper is found lieing more than twice in a year should be broken up and abolished. printing whatever you want then acknowledging your lie in a small piece a few days later doesnt cut it.

i know of one story where a red-top hounded someone they suspected of being a love-rat. they basically made his life hell to such a point he killed himself. they then found out it had all been a case of mistaken identity!

not to mention that they just make up stories... i have talked to my mate and he has many times just made up complete lies due to him missing deadlines etc...

wasnt it the mirror that due to its knowingly leaking confidential documents meant the breakdown of a court case where some asian guys had been 'paky bashed' by some football playing idiots? the guys never got prosecuted....

i dont read papers any more (big lies in red tops and subtle lies in the times, mail etc) due to the complete unobjective bollocks you normally see...

BBC website suits slapped for cash splurge

Liam

the bbc is just annoying sometimes...

..by how much money it wastes. 97million on a new channel for the scottish language! wtf? its the 4th most widely spoken language in scotland! this is just a waste of money. i also find it a bit annoying that everyone from the beeb seems to be from the south, scotland or ireland - what about the north? you know, that bit that subsidises the south :)

they do provide a few good things, but HD channel is badly supported (hardly ever anything good on it) plus dr who not in HD! bbc3 and 4 never have anything on! then we supply the rest of the world with the service we pay for...

reduce all these bullshit niche stations and channels and concentrate on quality - where is the decent humour at the moment? this is one thing the beeb excel at.

oh, and did you know the beeb is helping channel 4s financing of HD! wtf? it has hundreds of millions in the bank yet license fee money going to help it!

also the beeb DOES have adverts - about 3 mins of WE ARE GREAT between each show now. so all we lack is 1 advert break per 30 mins and its channel 4!
