Nehalem - Neh HAY lem
There you go, everyone.
And all fanboyisms aside, hyperthreading (like SMT, cache hits, MMX, etc.) will live and die based on the compiler. I don't know how you'd effectively write C++ (Java, C, C#) to manage the instruction code order of your packaged software. So Intel: help out Microsoft, Apple and the FOSS community with those compiler options, why don't you? I bet if you smartened up those compilers so they were exploiting all the tricks you packed in your CPUs, and we re-compiled the base OSs, drivers and MS Office, you'd speed up both my dual Xeon Alienware w/Vista (1st edition HT!) and my dual-core MacBook Pro both considerably!
Or Arbitrarily Slice
Find the length of the file and then divide it into two sections. Calculate the hash of each half. That should work with just the one hash function.
Zune 1.5
If MS really wants to jumpstart the Zune market, they should release an iPod accessory that adds wireless sharing between Zunes and iPods. Spread the Social(tm)!
That's one of Zune's differentiating features - if they show iPod owners how cool a $40 add-on can make their iPod, it's a viral device to get iPod owners to take another look at Zune proper. If they sell it at a *slight* profit, they may even find their iPod aftermarket device is more profitable than the Zune itself... but it's a win-win situation either way.
I'm an iPod owner, but those Zunes *do* have great screens, and I like those gummy cases... if only they were comptaible with my 800 CDs all converted into Apple Lossless and kept on my RAID 5 array... *sigh*
Only One Problem Left
After reading the full report, the only problem I see is the weight of the fresh seawater on the plane which is used to keep the shark happy. The shark on which the frikkin' laser is mounted (for optimal targeting purposes). Read the original brief, people - don't make me extract that one critical nugget of information for you. I have seawater pumps to upgrade.

I have to question the authenticity of the above link, since I would have assumed The Register(R) to have been first with this story if it were, in fact, genuine.
