Apple MacBook mid-2010

Ivan Headache

read again

I said I have done several of these. I am not doing the same one over again. They belong to clients. Clients who have never done back-ups.(or if they have they've done it on Sticks)

Did I say these transfers were from Macbooks? I said G3 and G4. If you want to open up a G3 or G4 iBook, or a G4 iMac or an eMac to get the drives out you are welcome. But my clients are passing their old computers on (or selling them), they want them to stay intact.

Ivan Headache

Not in my experience

In the last 6 months I've had three times as many MacBook/macBook Pro installations as I have had imacs. I've 1 Mac Mini and no Mac Pros.

If you stand in the Apple store in Regent street (or at westfield) you'll see a steady stream of macbook purchasers.

Mind You, I haven't been in the the new phone came out, But I did speak to a blueshirt at Westfield the week after the iPad came out. She said they were selling one (iPad) every two minutes.

Ivan Headache

Don't forget

The software you have to buy for the Sony to give you same user experience that the macbook will give straight out of the box.

Also, straight out of the box and on the internet in about 2 minutes or so (depends on your typing speed.

Also, what's so good about having blu-ray? (truthfully!)

Ivan Headache

I Like this unit ...but

I've dealt with a number of these since they were launched but I have two serious issues with it.

the main one is the lack of a firewire port (at the moment I'm not interested in USB3). Migrating from an older mac to one of these is a right pain in the bum. With FW it is straight forward and easy to move the entire content of an older mac to a newer, and it's relatively swift.

The options that Apple offer to migrate your older mac to your new MacBook are quite frankly awful.

The default mechanism is to use the WiFi connection. Four days later it may be finished - if one of the machines hasn't got bored and gone to sleep in the meantime. The alternative is to use an ethernet connection - well that probably will take half a day. But that is only part of the problem.

In order to use the new migration system (either method) a piece of software has to be installed on the older Mac. It's on the CD that comes with the Macbook - but the installer is intel only so it won't work on a G3 or G4 mac. So you go to the Apple website to download the app from there - assuming that you can find it. Why is it so well hidden?

Then you install it onto the older Mac - as long as it is running 10.4. Many (in fact I would say almost all of mine) clients are still running 10.3 on their G3 imacs and on their G4s.

Therefore you have to upgrade the OS on a machine that is going to grass once the tranfer is done.

In my experience it takes almost 6 hours to transfer an 80G mac because of this, compared to about an hour with a FW equipped mac. (And that is if all the upgrades and installs go well the first time!)

The other issue is that the two USB ports are too close together. You cannot stick 2 USB sticks in at the same if they are not the slim variety.

Apple sues three more over power adapter 'knock-offs'

Ivan Headache

Already have some.

They are fine with Apple's PSU but can't be used on Ivana's work povided HP because it needs an earth connection.

Ivan Headache

Is it the adaptor or the poor design

of the American mains plug?

In the UK there's certainly no 'hanging'. The adaptors are firmly fixed in the wall.

Alternatively you use the cable extension that Apple provides so that the weight of the adaptor is on the floor or desk and not 'hanging' off the plug.

On the down side, our mains plug is an absolute sod to fit into a laptop bag.

Zappa's widow loses trademark case over own name

I think you'll find

Robotic cargo spacecraft misses rendezvous with ISS

Ivan Headache

As an avid ISS watcher

I was out last night to watch it pass over. It was a very clear night and even though it wasn't completely dark, quite a few stars were visible. As the ISS came into view I was wondering whereabouts the progress ship would be, and would it be visible?

Just before the ISS reached maximum elevation we spotted the Progress about 5-10 degrees ahead of it on an identical track.

Next good pass over London is tonight (sunday) at about 2148. If there's no cloud it should be easy to see as it will be directly overhead (comes in from the west).

Dyson Air Multiplier desktop cooler

Ivan Headache

Re: Hang on

Why anyone buys hideous yellow and purple vaccum cleaners is beyond me - especially when they are so damn heavy and unreliable.

Go into any Costco and look at the returns pile. There's invariably a dyson in there - sometimes two.

We fell into the marketing trap and bought one. It was no better than the previous electrolux (despite being four times the price). After getting heartily fed up with it constantly overheating and shutting down (cleaned the filters and all that on a regular basis), after a couple of yerars it went to the tip. Replaced with an LG at £40. Lasted about 4 years 'til its bearings failed and then bought another LG at £50 which is still going strong and sucks way better than the Dyson ever did.

Perhaps that system will apply to the British Library's plan automatically.

Apple MacBook Pro 15in

Ivan Headache

oh not another one!

How many times has it to be written "Macs DO NOT HAVE a one button mouse" ?

I think Steve ought to pay to have that put up on the Hollywood hill so that even myopic windows users can read it.

Notoriously short of software? Please describe your version of notorious. Some of us use our macs to earn our living - and we do it with the software that is readily available. So far (in excess of 15 years) I haven't been prevented from doing what I need to do by any shortage of software.

What has drivers for a camera got to do with a computer that has an SD slot. I have not connected my cameras (any of them) to my computers (any of them - even those without slots - which is most of them) for over 5 years. Yet the pictures and the movies are all there, ready to use.

Ivan Headache

Fair review.

I've dealing with a number of these recently - clients really like them.

My only real issue is that the two USB ports are too close together. I cannot plug two sticks in at the same time unless they are those tiny PNY units.

Contrary to the reviewer, I'm glad the FW800 is there.

Apple in shock talks with Reg reader

Ivan Headache

Yes, what of iPhoto?

In daily use here managing a collection of close of 10,000 images and other files. Fully integrated with every other app (including Adobe CS3) that is used daily here producing all sorts of training and promotional material.

If you are having trouble with it, I suggest you make sure your updates are done and you have plenty of RAM. Also you may be using it incorrectly - I have many clients who insist on moving images out of iphoto to other locations by rummaging around in folders just so they can do something with an image. Completely unnecessary. Everything is done from the iPhoto window (or though the library browsers in other App).

I haven't had a single issue with iPhoto since version 8 (iLife 09) came out. (Apart from a few face recognition errors.)

I know this will probably be flagged as fanboy defence - but I use this app day in day out every day. and 'it just works1' I have other DAM software that I have spent money one - large amounts in some cases - but iPhoto works better than they do.

The Lovely Ivana

bought a super-duper battery-powered floor mop (don't ask me why - I've been married to her for 30 years out and there are some things I still can't fathom). It sprayed special cleaner on to the floor and then mopped it up again with special mopping-pads. It was made by Flash and used special bottles of Flash Liquid and special Flash mopping-pads.

Flash has a monopoly on Flash battery-powered floor mops.

I don't see anyone making a huge fuss that you can't buy bottles of Cilit-Bang or jif to use in it.

Jobsian Vendetta - Flash stabbed by Mac the Knife

Ivan Headache

..Most apps in the app store don't make very much money...

That's probably true. But some apps make huge amounts of money.

Stand on a normal London Tube train and look at the market place. Just do a casual count of how many iPhones (or iPod Touches) you can see in a 10 minute period.

I spent a day at the BETT in January. Which phone did I see being used by visitors more than any other? - the iPhone. Which phone was actively being promoted by exhibitors as a learning tool for the classroom? - the iPhone.

Developers who can't see past flash are developing themselves out of a huge and ever-growing marketplace. Remember, the iPad has barely started.

Adobe to sue Apple 'within weeks,' says report

Ivan Headache

I am now missing the plot here.

What are Adobe going to sue about?

Ir's all very well saying the Adobe has lots of dosh and can afford to sue - but what for? No-one in this 'discussion' has come up with anything that warrants a court case.

Ivan Headache

the one on the left, the one on the right, the one in the middle or the one on the sides?

As an IT professional(?) you should know by now that Macs do not have 1 button mice.
