Apple fires legal salvo at FBI for using All Writs law in iPhone brouhaha

Re: Completely pointless anyway (@Crazy Operations Guy)

"Well, MDM is quite often used to deploy policies and enable provisioning/wiping company data (its own apps for instance). It can thus enforce locking and other security policies, but it can't unlock your phone per se (well, they can factory reset/wipe it if so configured, but it wouldn't help in this case, quite the contrary) - they need PIN IIRC, not MDM password (which could be remotely reset)."

@bri. The above is incorrect - San Bernadino were using MobileIron on some of their devices, the unlock command is pretty starightforward in there (select the user > actions > unlock in the admin portal), as long as it had some network connectivity and power they would be able to get in.

See http://www.reuters.com/article/us-apple-encryption-software-exclusive-idUSKCN0VS2QK for more details.

FBI says it helped mess up that iPhone – the one it wants Apple to crack

Mobile Device Management?

If it is a corporate owned device, why weren't they using some MDM software to manage the device? MobileIron has an unlock command & I'm pretty sure that their competitors would have the same (a quick google shows that AirWatch and Citrix XenMobile do, haven't researched more).

The fact that the San Bernadino county were either too cheap or incompetent to manage their mobile devices effectively shouldn't be the cause of Apple having to undermine future iOS device sales by breaking the security of their devices.

Re: Time to start taxing these lard buckets

It wouldn't be a surprise if a significant portion of our obese fell into the economically inactive category. If you also want to reduce the benefits paid to these people you'd have my support, however if you want to tax obese people more just to feed our bloated & obese government then count me out.

Re: Populism and the Licence

The main problem with the BBC news output is that it is basically The Guardian TV. When I worked there a large proportion of their external recruitment was done using adverts in the Guardian media section on Mondays, so it is hardly surprising that if you recruit using a certain newspaper that you end up with a disproportionate number of their readers among your workforce.
