Flab-fighting LOHAN fettles fantastical flying truss

RainForestGuppy

Bad Design

Sorry but anchoring a tube at on end and hoping it'll be stiff enough is just asking for trouble.

Surely a better design would have been to use a tube with a slot in it. The tube could have been clamped to the truss along its entire length. 2 inserts at the nose and tail of the aircraft would ensure that there would be no twisting upon launch, and as long as the inserts we made of a suitable material and the slotted tube well greased there wouldn't be much friction.

And wouldn't a 'blast' plate fixed to the truss behind the rocket motor give it a bit more of a kick on ignition. Yes newton's 3rd but I'm assuming that the mass of the truss, balloon etc is a lot more than the aircraft.

How the clammy claws of Novell NetWare were torn from today's networks

RainForestGuppy

What destroyed Netware.. Perfect Office!!

NDS was far superior to Active Directory, but basically the "management" at Novell decided to try to compete against MS Office in the desktop application market.

I remember going to a trade show and wanted to discuss Netware and although the Novell stand was the biggest there it was all about Perfect Office and Netware was relegated to a tiny kiosk tacked on the side.

They basically gave up on their core product to flirt in another area and got seriously stiffed! They tried to come back with Netware 5, but by then it was too late.

If I had a time machine I would go back to the meeting where some joker decided that Novell should by Word Perfect and shoot them!!

Re: bad attitude

It was launched from a rocket sled. (That's what they're famous for at Pendine). The sled comes to the a dead stop and the penetrator was flung forward. Not the best way to ensure the correct accuracy but since they were testing deceleration rather then penetration depth the correct attitude is not important.

In practise I expect they'll have a small reaction motor that will accelerate them to impact speed, and probably put on a bit of spin for stability in the rarefied atmospheres

China slips behind US in technology innovation stakes

RainForestGuppy

What was the question asked, and to whom?

"Global technology Execs", "which it makes after interviewing over 800 leaders of entities that range from start-ups to large enterprises and included VC firms"

OK that seems to sum it up the respondents were made up from idiots from The Apprentice, who create a ebay store and class themselves as "internet entrepreneurs" and Deputy Vice-president of paper clips at Xerox, who has more time on his hands and thinks that filling in these surveys make him an important strategy leader.

Innovation is about coming up with something new and original, not just putting existing technology in a different coloured case.

The computer was an innovation.

The Mouse was an innovation.

The Wide Wide web was an innovation

ARM processers were an innovation

LCD screens were an innovation

The idea of an "app store" was an innovation

Collecting all the pieces to create a product is a fantastic part piece of inspired design.

OFFICIAL: Humans will only tolerate robots as helpful SLAVES

RainForestGuppy

Truth in humour

In Red Dwarf, when asked why a series 3000 droid (a more basic model) looked my human like, Kryten (a series 4000) says that the series 3000 was a complete failure because people didn't like robots that were to human like.

Ask yourself this would you be more comfortable giving orders to a "robot slave" that looked like a human or to one that looked like R2D2?

Re: Curiosity...

Very Different.

Apple**/google/amazon are resellers, they sell directly to the customer in the country where the customer lives but don't pay corporation tax in that country.

Samsung is a manufacturer. They do not have local sales, its the like of Carphone Warehouse, Dixons, Phones4u, O2, etc who retail to the customer in the local country.

RainForestGuppy

Low Cost iPhone

Not sure what features you could remove from an iphone 5, it's already lagging behind recent phones from other manufactuers. So unless it's a model for developing markets such as Africa I can't see much point.

You'll just have to wait until 2015 to get your iphone6 or galaxy5.

Retailer challenges Visa penalty fees in data security dust-up

RainForestGuppy

Forgot to mention that this approach would also give business decision makers a tangible dollar value to security controls, rather than vague threats of fines. Which would get them taking security seriously for once.

RainForestGuppy

I don't particulary like the way PCI fines. I better way would be to base charge interchange rates (how much the retailer has to pay the acquirer per card transaction) on a risk based approach.

e.g.

Passed QSA PCI DSS assessment, never had a breach in 5 years : rate=2p per transaction

Not PCI compliant, No PCI compliance program, had a breach 2 years ago : rate=25p per transaction.

This would let companies decide what was best for them, go PCI and get cheap rate, don't go PCI but pay higher costs to ofset the risk to the card companies.
