Wi-Fi hotspots to skyrocket over next five years

Porns blocked on GSM GPRS and Edge

You have to go through the same gatekeeper... Although I have to giggle each time I read a post on a network operators forum threatening to leave because of the kiddy filter. Iirc only three turn it off by default and then only on pay monthly; but they're never the operator the outraged customer is threatening to move to.

That said the article is wrong on one point - the solution isn't kiddy filters on 2.4Ghz; the solution is to get the government out of the censorship business and for parents to take responsibility (and they complain that todays yoof is irresponsible...)

Foreign Office loses dozens of PCs and smartphones

Another Hatchet Job...

Just some napkin figures...

28 computers

32 mobiles

14000+ members on staff in 170+ countries.

Let's pretend only 10% of staff get a work issued device, so 1400 just to be conservative. That's a loss rate about 4%

iPhone 4 (non s) O2 PAYG 429.99

O2 Insure on Pay Monthly 12.50/ month + £50+ excess on claim so over 12 months if lost = £200

Implied odds of losing: just under 47%

Implied odds if we assume insurance is sold on 50% markup: About 23%

Could we actually see some quality journalism rather than cheap hatchet jobs. As others said before me and I said in the last article these statistics mean squat without a point of comparison and without an idea of the total number of devices.

Pay-by-wave: At least it's better than being mugged

Chad H.

No sale

I was in Australia the other week and there credit cards (the chip n pin type, not NFC) can now be used without PIN for purchases less than $25.

My brother lost his wallet. You can guess what happened next.

For some of us, no pin purchases like pay and wave want, are not a desirable feature but a problem waiting to happen. Ask for my pin all the time, or no sale.

Cheap gas is a 'crisis' for Greens, but not for us

Chad H.

Or

They can use something a little less damaging? Geothermal... Tidal...Solar.

Oh, Dorothy called she wants her Straw Man back.

Chad H.
WTF?

Article fails to back up title

Maybe I missed it, but which part of the article detailed how this is a crisis for the greens?

Is Shale Gas limited? Yes

Does it pollute? Yes

Ergo, no crisis for the greens.

Look I agree with you guys on the ROC rought on wind power; but your solution to the energy problem assists in the creation of a greater problem.

Consumer Reports: iPhone 4S antenna doesn't suck

Chad H.

I disagree

I found it hard to replicate "Antennagate" on my old 4; but find it easier on the 4S.

It stilll requires me to hold the device in a silly way and intentionally cause it however.

Its not going to work on both angles. Anti porn people will play the "Save the children line"; whilst most normal porn users probably don't want to be watching porn in such a public environment.

Apple shovels $400m in stock grants to top execs

Chad H.

The way it works

Is that these options give you the right to buy shares at a fixed price later. So if you have the option to buy for example 400k in shares today then the share price goes up, for arguments sake lets say it doubles, then yes you only need to stump up 400k but get 800k worth.

However i may be wrong but i understand options themselves are sometimes tradable - you can sell some to someone else.

Greens threaten to sue over solar power cash slash

Chad H.
FAIL

You can't have it both ways!!

You can't say that there's a massive amounts of wealth redistribution from the poor to the middle and wealthy classes and then turn around later in the same article and say the amount of energy produced is so low it won't pay it's own installation cost. The two logically must be proportionate to each other

If the amount of leccy produced is low, then There isn't a great amount of wealth redistribution going on via FiT. Equally if the amount being redistributed is high then there must be a lot of leccy.

Noone reviewing games wants to be the one to stand up and say this is bad. Have you seen the size of Marketing budgets and how much advertising is in your average gaming mag? These guys pay the rent with money that comes from the publishers; its in their best interests to say everything is good.

Steve Jobs named most influential game guy – ever

Chad H.
FAIL

No He didn't.

Tim Berners Lee created the Web; one particular facet of said infrastructure used by modern gaming (the internt). In fact, I'd go as far as to say if the web disipeared tomorrow, there'd be little to no immediate effect on gaming. Multiplayer? Fine - still got Internet even with no web.

The Web has little if anything to do with gaming - as great as it is.

Chad H.
Thumb Down

Err

Look I wouldn't list jobs on a list of influential persons in gaming; but he has more of a right to be there than Berners -Lee.

Bill Gates strangled Microsoft's 'tablet for creatives'

Chad H.

Err no

Whilst some elements of the iPad have crossed over the Mac remains a very distinct user experience to iDevices. This is completely different to metro being forced to fit in a hole where it doesn't belong.

Chad H.

Courier's cancellation highlights exactly what Microsoft is doing wrong.

They refuse to learn the lesson that they should be learning from the X-Box. Instead of taking the lesson that different devices need different approaches they're married to this idea that every PC Phone and Tablet can have this unified system and interface... And its simply not the case. It didn't work trying to make WinPhone like a PC and it won't work trying to make a PC a tablet - Metro is Fugly and clunky in a mouse environment.

The Courier could have been a contender - as an iPad Owner I think the courier could have been superior. There's no reason why an email client couldn't have been included (She seems to send an email okay in the video).

They just simply don't get it. MS spend too much time listening to the marketing folk.

BBC iPlayer to require TV licence

Chad H.

But the problem with Commercial TV is

If the program you like doesn't appeal to advertisers; or appeal to a demographic that the advertisers are interested i; then the program goes. In other words it doesn't matter how good quality your program may be if it doesn't appeal to the 16-29 demographic its in trouble.

With the BBC they are accountable just to us (in theory at least) - the viewers/license holders - not to the admen.

Chad H.

Well

The funny thing is, those car races you like to watch; they cost money. Someone has to pay the cameraman, the computer guys (do you know who's winning) and the annoying announcer guy. Oh, and the racing organisation wants a cut too.

That money you resent paying... Well that goes to pay for all that. If you don't like paying maybe you should suggest to mr ecclestone and co that they all work for free.

Chad H.

Noone has ever been put in prison for not paying their license fee.

Acting in contempt of court perhaps... But that is a serious crime.

Chad H.

So AdamW

You're more than happy to watch BBC programming, but expect everyone else to pay for it.

If more folk paid, maybe there would be less repeats... Content isn't free to make Ya'know.

Chad H.

Well

It seems easy to police (please insert license number to play this video) and prevents people freeloading and thus keeps the overall rate down. Win win - unless you're a freeloader

Windows XP and iPod: A tale of two birthdays

Chad H.
WTF?

Citation required.

If by Stagnating you mean "INCREASED BY 48% in 2005" then you're absolutely correct - although I would suggest you call Oxford first and tell them the definition of the word stagnating now means greatly increased.

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/Some_Analysts_Excited_by_Mac_Sales_Figures/

Some analysts are looking beyond the unrealistic iPod sales expectations for 2005, and are focusing instead on the strong Mac sales figures. Analysts from Needham & Company see the Mac as a strong force in Appleis performance during fiscal 2005.

The key to Appleis 57 percent revenue growth was directly linked to the 48 percent increase in Mac sales, substantially higher than the overall PC growth rate of 12 to 15 percent. Needham attributes most of the increase to Windows users switching to the Mac, since it feels sales to existing Mac owners were relatively flat.

Chad H.

I see

So because I worry about little things like "Facts" in the Mac vs PC debate, I must be a fanboy.

Full Disclosure - I have a mac, with windows (wouldnt consider buying one without it) but only use the windows side to game. But I recognise that they're like different tools - some tools do some jobs better than others. Can you unscrew a screw with a knife? Sure. Open a can with a Screwdriver? Done that. Are there better tools suited for the job than those choices? Yup.

I find for everyday PC usage that the Mac OS runs nicer, and I prefer its quirks (like being able to scroll in an inactive window, menu bars that are always at the top, etc); thats not to say windows doesn't have its place too - its better for gaming and err... well if I find something else I'll let you know.

Chad H.
Thumb Down

Err... No.

Because at one point or another every man and his dog released a windows compatible MP3 player, and didn't see the sort of success Apple did.

It was a pre-requisite for going massive, yes; but it didn't give it legs.

Theres a time and place for open; and a time and place for closed. Phones are better closed to ensure their critical functionality (Calls; texts; internet access) isn't compromised. Normal Desktop PCs are better open as they're supposed to be do anything machines.
