Alibaba beats Google for IaaS market share, with IBM out of sight

Cheesenough

Fishy figures

Those figures from Google strike me as a touch too "round" and make me suspicous. The original Gartner press release http://www.gartner.com/newsroom/id/3808563 is the same.

Gartner: Can you tell me how much business your IaaS division is doing?

Google: Er...[makes tapping noise on calculator]...we're doing more than we did last year!

Gartner: And how much is that exactly?

Google: Er...I'm sure its...er...loads.

Gartner: There's a free set of steak knives in it for you, if you give me an actual number.

Google: We're behind Microsoft, and ahead of Rackspace, aren't we?

Gartner: You have to tell me...

Google: Ok...ok...FFFFFFour...hundred...

Gartner: 400, that put's you behind Rackspace?...

Google: No! What meant to say is 400 is what we are year to date, I mean 500...

Gartner: Yes, you've pipped in ahead of Rackspace

Google: Get in! ... and we're 3rd now aren't we?

Gartner: No Alibaba beat both you and Rackspace. [Put's down phone]

Google: Fuck! No wait, It's 600! ... its 600! ...

The EPA believes that methane has 28-36 times more Global Warming Potential than carbon dioxide. https://www.epa.gov/ghgemissions/understanding-global-warming-potentials

Whether you believe them or not, there are departments in the US Gov that do, and that's why they've gone to the bother of encouraging farmers to build digesters.

It's not very shiny - is it?

I would have expected a new geegaw from Apple to exude the cool, sleek, shiny design ethos - but that looks like its covered in the sort of netting laundry tablet bags are made of.

What if Huawei builds an American factory?

Is there anything to stop Huawei building a US warehouse and employing a few dozen 'muricans to screw the boxes together. GE Appliances for instance are owned by a Chinese parent company and churn out fridges "Produced in USA" (i.e. screwed together from components sourced from Mexico and China) http://www.goedekers.com/blog/ge-appliances-made/

OK, fridges are less sensitive to arguments about the security of national infrastructure, but I'm not sure that politicians think that far ahead when the promise of a new factory and jobs for Americans in their state are on the line.

HP doorsteps Apple shoppers at the altar of dreams

Re: The problem with the HP kit no matter how good it is, is...

...and this year might be the year of Linux on the desktop.

I think you missed the point of the article, it wasn't saying that Windows is better than Mac, or HP is better than Apple. It reports that HP is feeling bullish about its current crop of products because they have a quality [in the sense of a trait] that many believed were the preserve of Apple

Re: In reality...

The tax rate for Diesel vs Petrol could also take account of the amount of CO2 emitted.

Petrol contains roughly 88% of the carbon as the same volume of diesel, so tax petrol at 88% of diesel!

I confess; I drive a petrol car.

BlackBerry snips Alcatel label off a midrange biz 'Droid, sells it for $299

Cheesenough
Meh

Not great value

$299 for a bundle which includes the phone and a portable charger brick - probably to make up for the rather limited 2610 mAh the phone has is all a bit meh. Especially when you consider that an LG G4, a Huawei Honor 7 and Moto X Play are all options at that price.

Admittedly none has Blackberry's secret sauce in them, but the added security that BB bestows on this device is pretty much unproven.

Re: Not counting all the iPads.

That's interesting, but the point the article makes is that in the business sector in the UK Microsoft sold more Surface Pros that Apple sold iPad Pros.

Altruistic Lawyer

Lawyer reported as saying,

"First and foremost, we have to find out how this happened and prevent it from happening ever again," he said. "That's the whole goal here. Is the product safe?"

Yes, and the best way of achieving that goal is for Apple to award my client thousands of dollars in compensation so that he can pay for the legal advice.

Re: Branding bugs

"XP not affected" is probably indicative that the target victims of the attack probably aren't using Windows XP any more. So it does beg the question, "Who are the 23% of Windows XP users?" in this article http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/10/03/microsofts_nightmare_deepens_windows_8_market_share_falling_fast/

Presumably they don't work for Ukrainian Government, NATO or Energy companies.

The picture is obviously of a mock up of the rover - the wheels appear to be attached to a shape cut out of a sheet of black plastic and the communications dish looks a little shonky. I would have thought that if they're planning to launch this next month, they would be well along with the construction of the real thing by now.

Greens not the keen amateurs they once were

The "Green" organisations have ceased to be the friendly, keen amateurs they once were (back in the 80's). Greenpeace now present a professional, business-like, tech-savvy, media-aware, political face to the world where once they were all kaftans, crochet tank tops and muesli. Although they are more effective lobbying force now, they look more like major oil companies they despise. I think the public just view them with the same level of suspicion as a consequence.

There is no mention of how you exit the store - does the entrance serve as an exit as well or are the thousands of Apple fanbois trapped in the hole living off iPad packaging?
