A videogame that truly takes the p*ss

@ Andy O'Rourke and others

The picture of the insect in a urinal has a long and glorious history that goes back to Victorian days.

The insect depicted is usually a honey bee, which is a smart alec Latin joke for the scholars.

(The latin for bee is Apis)

And they're gonna police this how?

This has partially been enforced already. Air weapons which are legal to own in the UK are now banned from sale by mail order or internet.

(Well to 100% accurate, you can order them via the net and pay for them, but they have to be collected in person)

This raises several points.

Either this means a requirement for age verification by some means or another, which can usually be counterfeited,

Or it means that online retailers cannot sell age restricted goods into the UK.

Can you really see Mr and Mrs online shopper ordering the weekly shop for delivery taking kindly to the fact that they now can't get a six pack of beer or a nice chianti with that.

Its a valid concern, but the cure is gonna be much worse than the illness

Just great. This means that any pencil-dick manager who takes an unhealthy dislike for any poor bugger working there can get his own back if and when the employee takes him to tribunal and (occasionally) wins.

Enough of this backstabbing crap goes on as it is, with decent employees being hounded out of the area. This dimwit idea takes it further.

I think the problem with the public perception of feminism is that certain self proclaimed feminists have taken the name to push their own agenda, which is not what necessarily what the original idea was all about.

I would think that most people would agree that feminism in its simplest state is generally agreed to be a good thing (Women should be treated equally to and have the same opportunities as men)

Where it gets messy is when it becomes a religious fervour, and fundementalists get involved. Thats when it really goes to crap.

Religious fundementalism is as similar as it is bad. The intial tenet of most religions is" Play nice boys and girls or (Insert deity of choice here) will punish you either in subtle ways in this life, or in the next"

Trouble is the emptiest vessels make the most noise, so both these reasonable ideas become soiled.

Body Modification any body?

This will seriously effect people who like to customise themselves, and show off the results

www.bmezine.com for example.

Now what these people get up to is not for me, I dislike pain, and I'm quite happy with what the good lord gave me in the way of dangly bits, and the amount of holes I have.

However, body modifiers take a lot of time and care researching what they want to do to themselves, and have been known to take a DIY approach that you won't hear about in the free leaflets at B&Q or Home Depot.

So they can't now show pictures on the internet, or talk to people who are considering a mod, and advise them on the safest way of doing it?

Goes against all the health advice and harm reduction that all of their paid do gooders want to advocate don't it

I actually agree with this

I've got two kids in school and I've seen the dangerous crap these grannies have to put up with.

And who are the worst, most dangerous offenders?

Mr executive suit, late for a meeting? Nope

White Van Man? Nope, they usually stop in plenty of time, and make sure all the kiddywinkles and Granny are well out of the way. Its a macho thing.

Kevin the chav in his plastic coated Nova? Nope.

A thought or two here

This is a technique that is technically difficult to perform, needs a good deal of manual skill and concentration, and even then is only as good as the collection of the sample.

The wages in the now privatised forensic science area are barely above minimum wage. Your average checkout person on the tills in Tesco gets paid considerably more, and the wages in the retail sector aren't traditionally considered high.

Quote:"Surely you'd prefer people to be killed quickly rather than die slowly in the ground (or sit on the ground with a tin can) because of being merely badly injured? So developing newer, more powerful weapons is surely in the humanitarian interest if you realise that war's not going to stop."

Agree from the humanitarian interest, however, from the military interest, less instantly lethal weapons are more effective. Some poor grunt with no legs screaming his last, but not just yet is a more effective result.

It demoralises the enemy, and takes out several more who look to get medical help to the fallen comrade.

Its a nice idea but..

As others have said its a wonderful idea until you crash.

To quote the BBC website:

Mr Negre says there's no issue with safety - if the air-car crashes the air tanks won't shatter - they will split with a very loud bang. "The biggest risk is to the ears."

Gonads!

Fixed air compressors and their tanks in an industrial setting are very tightly controlled for a reason, there is a hell of a lot of energy stored in there and it can do nasty things like blow walls out, not just give you ringing in the ears.

I've used full size gas cylinders in lab settings in the past, they have to be treated with respect. Even just opening the valve a fraction without a regulator attached can cause such delights as ruptured eardrums, or can kill you with a gas embolism if a high pressure jet impinges on the skin.

Its a good idea for stationary emergency power generation, but for vehicle use, I don't think so

The Elephant in the room

I keep hearing the same tired refrain by "Industry leaders" and the like that they are decrying the skill set of the candidates that they want to employ. They seem to be missing the point somewhat.

The reason that the number of hard science grads and postgrads is dropping because quite frankly who the hell wants to do hard study, incur big debts, then join the workforce where you are consistantly underpaid in comparison to colleagues doing non technical jobs with fluffy McQualifications.

This is due to the UK wishing to become a "Service Economy" and get rid of all that nasty "making things"
