Uncle Sam wants to make it clear that America's elections are very, very safe

"From whom, exactly, we wonder"

Well, wonder no more... US citizens (yes, I am one) are incredibly stupid.

In my estimation, authoritarians inside the US are responsible for much of the unease about the democratic process in the US.

There are a significant number of US citizens who are ignorant, and "ignorance is bliss".

History is rhyming (per Samuel Clements, as I recall). The same crap that took hold 80 or 90 years ago is taking hold again.

Peace out.

Everyone's suing AI over text and pics. But music? You ain't seen nothing yet

Apologies, I'm in a "reflective" mood.

RIP: Software design pioneer and Pascal creator Niklaus Wirth

RedneckMother

late to this news / game, but...

What a mind! What a positive influence on software (among other topics)!

RIP. I had an "early" introduction to him / his influence on software, languages, etc... he had a profound influence on our present software and software language situation.

I was "blessed" to attend a symposium with him as the speaker. It was a JOY to listen, and attempt to follow his thoughts. He had so very many profound and insightful perspectives, which he freely and gladly shared.

Y'all 'scuse me. I am in mourning.

A "dated" perspective

Back in the late 80s, I had a software development gig, I worked from my home, a few hours away from the corporate office. I would wake up and jump into my work well before dawn, and continue working well into the evening.

From time to time, the Powers would provide travel and accommodations for my presence at the "office"... usually for deadline "deliverables".

The "powers" received about 60 to 80 hours of production from me on a weekly basis. I was kickin *ss and taking names.

When there was a power shift at the C levels, I was informed that I had to relocate to the office and work onsite.

My productivity suffered. I ceased to make the contributions to which I was accustomed, and I deteriorated into a slacker.

It was a horrible experience, and hurt both my employer and my self esteem. What a f*ckin waste.

Make Linux safer… or die trying

this may be redundant...

I haven't read all previous comments, so "EXCUUUSE MEEE" if I am being redundant.

The reason WindBlows took off was because MS gave away the development tools to programmers (back in the day). It was cheesy and crappy, but they got to market first, and dominated the desktop application space.

Also, MS played a long game against IBM and OS/2.

I was one of those people who supported various proprietary *nix platforms (achieving certs for several, and fighting all the conflicts). *nix finally began to compete with the adoption of Linux on multiple platforms.

Many years ago, I was able to banish MS from my household. I have various Linux distros, on various hardware platforms, and am (mostly) happy with the interoperability (and VERY happy with the adherence to standards).

I don't do windows.

Clinton's $1m troll fight

RedneckMother

Oh dear, oh shit.

Sorry, but the self-ascribed description "Barrier Breakers" is close, but no cigar.

From my perspective, it's more like "Bernie Bashers".

Damn it all. At least Sanders has principles. I can't say that I agree with him on all (perhaps most) issues, but he IS talking about the rigged system, and the money (and entities controlling money).

How can "rational" people allow big money and "the powers that be" advance Hillbillary? Let's all recognize her for the corporate shill that she is, and will always be. Let's start talking about the real problem, that the USA (hell, the whole world) is under the control of a handful of individuals? Money talks, and HC walks (in the direction and manner dictated by the money). Let's talk about her policies and actions, which have resulted in so much heartache in non-US countries.

If it weren't for the (rightly expressed) derision on The Reg, I wouldn't have the slightest clue who most of those twits are... I don't click on "news" links about people who are (evidently) popular (self promoted?). I often see their names, but they only seem to be a part of some strange "fandom" and "popular media" interest, and only serve to distract people from reality. Is there anything worthwhile that they've done? What is the excitement all about? Two months ago, I finally discovered why I kept hearing (reading?) about "Kardashians". I thought it was some reference to an obscure SciFi series. Geez! Who gives a shit? Have any of them made a positive influence on society or humanity?

Never thought I'd agree with an oppressive government's policy... (and, I still don't)

Re: Still the same after all these years...

"Windows, still held together with tape and bailing wire."

As an IBM Field Engineer explained to me, decades ago:

"Well, here's your problem. Yeah, someone found and fixed the physical interlock failure, but they used amateur (Scotch) tape! You have to use professional (filament) tape!"

Sure enough, filament tape enabled us to get through the night, until parts arrived the next day.

I miss "Earl the Pearl" (the IBM FE). He was a common sense farm boy, and impressed me with his ability to get things working until parts could be obtained and installed. I remember him scavenging batteries from our company cars and using vise grip pliers (for clamps) and spare wire to help us get through a different night, when a 24VDC supply went "South" and the replacement part wouldn't arrive for 12 hours.
