O2 tears wraps off £26-a-month mobe sport, music, games (and 4G)

three is fine by me

Even in remote parts of Northern Ireland I can get a 16mb line and in the office its those on the 3 network who are happy enough to set up tethering to stream sky sports to the plasma screen on the wall. No other network compares. As for bundled merde like Spotify - keep it. I source my own content.

Re: Intelligence!

You completely missed the point. Gates is aware of and indeed backs the use of tech for imrpoving quality of life. However, the diseases and awful conditions the people with on a daily basis, will not find salvation on a website, but in medicines and clean drinking water and a safe food supply. I'm all for the remote clinic idea for instance, but it is no use if the people cannot leave their homes due to being ravished by painful and crippling conditions.

0) You could learn about Malaria and how to avoid catching it from the internet. <- and still go out and drink from your only water supply, full of feces and god knows what else.

1) You could use the internet to ask for medical assistance. <-Or approach the medical staff who have medicines with them, backed by international health organisations

2) You could use the internet to help you find the nearest clinic. <- and not get to it because you are too weak, possibly blind and have a family to attend to.

3) You could use the internet to discover how to treat malaria and acquire appropriate treatments. <-what, using paypal accounts full of sand?

Re: mint - linux year of the desktop?

Correct.

Its been painful being a Linux fan and a Liverpool supporter - every year etc...

I have played with Linux for years, but quite frankly I find myself back in the Windows world every time. My Linux machines have all become VMs. Why?

Windows is less hassle. Its full of flaws, but they are familiar and easy to live with flaws. With Linux I was always compelled to tinker for the perfect setup, which I never achieved because I was always looking to tinker....

Have to agree with them

Music is being cheapened and turned into a commodity. So what if the manufacturer of the product wants to protect their right to make money from it? Yes its nice to get something a bit cheaper but frankly if your going to be an arsehole over cost then you deserve the flack that comes with it.

To Peter R. 1 - you have a choice as a consumer to buy or not to buy multiple copies of DSOTM. Don't go bitching just because another format has popped up. you could always go on ebay for a portable CD player...

Pink Floyd produced a body of work that millions have enjoyed for decades and most likely for decades to come. They deserve to reap the benefits to their fullest extent.

We have a piece that says Apple are playing catchup and have been out-manouvered by other OSes and all they have really done is add some polish yet "Specifications aside, the interface hasn't aged well."

So the writer's fanboism shines through for shiny shiny??

Its a good jobs for Apple that content is king.

Holly Willoughby still couldn't get me to a Windows Phone. I think James Corden ruined all the good work she did.

I don't miss the start button but I hate the fact that Metro apps and muck and how the start screen interacts with the desktop environment is bloody painful. If they pull Win 8 back to a Win 7 position with metro taking a supporting and not a starring role, then it might be worth the money.

I've been stung by the poor software on HTC handsets, so this time I'm going where the action is. I have never used a S3, so all the reviews that directly compare the two are a bit pointless to me. This handset will be bang up to date for ages (Sensation XE was superseded within a month of ownership) and has enough of a balance of gimmicks and power to keep my interest. So what if S-translate is muck? Sat nav on the 5" screen will make up for that for me personally.

Microsoft CFO quits as quarterly results fail to sparkle

Time to go Steve

MS are in a perfect storm of their own making. They got lazy and allowed the mobile and cloud markets to run off without them. With controversial approaches to Office and Windows not going down well with either enterprise or consumers, their highly detrimental and desperate focus of competing in the tablet market has ruined the PC market and lost them some already struggling friends. They look like a firm without a clue how to get back into the game and a radical change of thinking is needed at the top.

I doubt many would shed a tear for MS at this difficult time. Particularly with a dinosaur at the helm in a market where you need either a visionary, or an in touch-with-the-modern-world CEO, neither of which Ballmer seems to be.

This is a compelling phone, but I'm gonna need some hands on time with it, an S4 and a Windows Phone before I commit to upgrading my Sensation XE.

The XE had potential by the bucket load but is badly let down by the software, so HTC already have that against them. Also, this missing button interface. A step too far away from normal Android (for instance, if I decide to root the device and slap on a ROM?)

Lack of wireless charging? Some cool new tech not in a flagship device.....

Lack of SD slot used to annoy me, but frankly I've got over myself. I either use online services, or FTP to my home NAS. My 3 wifi gives me plenty of headroom for that.

All in al though, it looks like phones have hit that point of being powerful enough to do everything. I look forward to key lime pie.

Good Luck To Them

I like the fact that Ubuntu are doing this. The concept is good - that one OS covers every device. However, what would sell it for me is if they can create the ability for people to put the OS on older kit (eg. my Acer Icona a500 which is currently a picture frame and never really excelled at anything) and keep it relevant. To have an all Ubuntu experience instead of android , IOS BB and windows in some combination, would be quite a concept and if it were to succeed, we could actually see the mythical "year of the Linux".

Re: re: Bought an 11" Asus Vivobook

I have a tablet. Its now a digital picture frame. I had a 17" desktop replacement laptop. Its now a media centre. I have a 6 core desktop machine. Used only for the occasional VM for work purposes.

I never once heard of anyone replacing the rest of their devices with a netbook.

However your point of "If everyone was in the market for that sort of machine" makes a good point. Thats why Win8 is on everything from tablets to laptops to all in one systems, because not everyone is in the market for that type of device.

Christopher Rogers
Thumb Up

Bought an 11" Asus Vivobook. Cracking wee laptop with an OS that fits perfectly, is intuitive to use and does not hinder my ability to carry out any tasks (that the hardware specs are capable of dealing with).

So, frankly I'm going to back Microsoft on Windows 8.

First world problems eh?!

Why did Comet fail? Hint: It wasn't just the credit insurers

Christopher Rogers

The world of retail is changing

We all know what has happened in the world with credit crunch, financial crisis and online stores battering the tripe out of bricks and mortar operations. Before the first 2 happened (retailers should have seen Amazon coming at least), companies like Comet thought they were on a pigs back and expanded almost out of control. Now reality has taken its bite.

You can't blame the VC's for doing what they do best - making a profit out of such massive collapses. The short sighted management teams of these firms allowed such a position to exist.

Eventually the supermarkets are going to wipe out the big box shifters and online shopping is here to stay. The future for electrical retailers is a hybrid of in town small retail stores, combined with a brilliant online presence and a great delivery service. Though the factor that will dictate the most is the experience in store - very highly trained professional staff and less effort to punt the bloody insurance deal at you.
