Why do these traders get billions to play with, unchecked?

Vladimir Plouzhnikov

Nope

"So I can arb between the price now and the price in the future."

No, you can't. When you do that you are taking a position. The arb implies that you have no overall position.

Depending on how exactly you are doing it you may speculate on outrights (the highest possible risk) or on time-spread (usually considered lesser risk but all depends on which particular markets you are talking about).

If you are talking about commodities you can use the strategy you mention to hedge your equal but opposite position in the physical goods but even then it is not an "arb". Normally such things are known as "contango plays" - when the forward curve is going up sufficiently steeply, you can buy your physical goods now, place them in storage and sell futures for the same quantity, say 3 months forward. If the contango is large enough to cover your financing and storage costs you will make money.

But even in that case there are still risks involved, higher or lower depending on whether the futures you used are deliverable or financially settled, whether your goods are of exactly the same quality, same location as the futures delivery basis etc etc.

Top 40

"they need to be amongst the best few in the world in order to break into the top 40."

Best in the world? I think not.

Should be lucky, follow instructions from their employers and open their mouths in synch with the recording.

LOHAN to suck mighty thruster as it goes off, in a shed

Vladimir Plouzhnikov

Al

"what happens to aluminium at -60 when its raised to whatever the rocket engine exhaust temp is in a short space of time, and simultaneously taken from external atmospheric pressure vs vacuum to internal pressure vs atmospheric?"

Nothing much, really.

I used to test samples of aviation alloys (including Al) to destruction, also at low temperatures (-90). Yes, everything gets more brittle at low temps but not to an extent which may affect the LOHAN test rig.

Vladimir Plouzhnikov

Yes, but these motors have a built-in nozzle and you can't change that.

In fact, short of some experimental aerospike engines, all space booster engines (1st stages) use compromise, sub-optimal nozzles.

So, if you can't do anything about it - why worry?

Vladimir Plouzhnikov

Thrust

"The thrust should be checked."

I believe it is specified on the engine's packaging...

Vladimir Plouzhnikov

Why would they need any of that?

They only need to test ignition. Once ignited, the motor will burn regardless of outside temperature and pressure (just make sure the casing is strong enough for it not to burst open). Therefore, if the ignition test is successful they don't need to maintain vacuum anymore - just let the fuel burn out...

Vladimir Plouzhnikov

A correction...

Surely, the "Thrust" arrow sould be pointing down and not up (unless the motor sucks, of course)?

"There are only 3 Star Wars films."

It's a matter of faith and as any matter of faith no amount of rational arguments can persuade the orthodox adepts to look at the subject matter of their faith from a different angle. A surprising number of people would rather die and even get their loved ones killed than allow their rigid view of the world altered in any way...

Why modern music sounds rubbish

Vladimir Plouzhnikov

@launcap & mattyrasker

Glad to notice that people still listen to the right kind of music :-)

Vladimir Plouzhnikov

Why modern music sounds rubbish?

Why fast food tastes rubbish and gives you heart disease?

The reasons are similar, both are manufactured by industries reliant upon selling maximum volume of low quality, low added value, commoditised cheap product to disinterested consumers who don't know better.

The quality is pegged at the lowest common denominator. In the music's case - a hooded teenager listening to his iPod through iPod earphones on a Tube train or demonstrating it to his friends using his phone's loudspeaker.

The quality of music must inevitably match the quality of the audio - i.e. be as bland, forgettable and unsatisfactory as possible so as to encourage the said consumer to delete it quickly and move on to buying the next lot of the same commodity.

That is a conscious choice the industry has made and that will eventually be their undoing (that and not the "piracy" they so much like to wail about).

Vladimir Plouzhnikov

Broadcast sound

"film broadcast with unfathomably wide range"

Either you have a special fat pipe pumping that wide range material into your TV or you are mistaken - TV broadcasts are just as range- and bandwidth- compressed as radio broadcasts.

But anyway, video soundtracks and music are two different things - they have different requirements and should be listened to on different equipment.

P.S. Dig around in your TV setup menues, I'm sure there are some dynamic-range compression options you can use to protect your neighbour from the sounds of US naval artillery barrage and Pratt & Whitney Double Wasps radials flying overhead...

Bolero

"What would "Bolero" sound like, mixed according to modern pop standards?"

I don't know but you should listen to King Crimson's version of it on their 40th anniversary remastered edition of Lizard :-)

NASA releases stunning new moon-landing snaps

Vladimir Plouzhnikov

I for one

Have some hope for our current economic problems.

The "developed" world has to find something and somewhere to expand into, otherwise it will slip into the "third world" category.

We don't produce things anymore - the "developing" world does that.

We are not needed to design anything - things required for day to day life have already been designed and can always be improved by the same "developing" world without our help.

The financial services only matter when you have finances.

So, in the past, in situations like this there was always the conquest, colonisation and empire building option. Or, at the very least, one could go to war against a rival empire with the hope for a good plunder. Neither of these are viable options anymore.

Really, more and more we are being pushed to do something bold like building a mine on an asteroid or Al smelter on the Moon (or fade away).

BTW: That will also take care of the aimless yoof who will suddenly see better things to do than stealing a few ipads from a local electronics shop...

French letter shock: Tax us more, demand rich people

Vladimir Plouzhnikov

LOL

"Why shouldn't we rise up and rip their throats out? Why are we not massing on Downing Street with pitchforks and cudgels?"

You should have done it prior to the last couple of general elections. But you were happily lapping up Labour's handouts and borrowing more money than you can possibly repay and living beyond means.

The Soviet Union needs to be recreated so that people like you could be sent there for a mandatory 15 year long reality check. That'll learn you...

Vladimir Plouzhnikov

A reminder

Rich people own or manage businesses. If you force them to pay more taxes they will pay you less salary.

Don't rejoice at the thought of government getting more money - they will find new ways of spending it so that it never reaches your pocket or benefits you in any way.

Those who believe that "taxpayers money" belong to taxpayers are deluded.

UK cops charge alleged Anonymous hacker

Vladimir Plouzhnikov

@Stephen

Lawyers - sense of humour = facepalm

Vladimir Plouzhnikov

Strange

"do an unauthorised act in relation to a computer, with intent to impair the operation of any computer or prevent or hinder access to any program or data held in a computer or to impair the operation of any such program or the reliability of such data,"

...on the one hand, it follows that a hacker using his own computer to hack into someone else's does nothing wrong because his actions on his computer are authorised (by himself).

on the other hand, if you argue that his action is not authorised on the target computer or program or data, then it means that by removing a newly found virus from your own machine you will commit a crime (as the virus writer certainly did not authorise you to hinder access to or impair operation of his virus program).

Microsoft unveils file-move changes in Windows 8

Marriage makes women get fat, divorce does same to men

Vladimir Plouzhnikov

Hmmm

Look. I am not a psychiatrist and not going to try to cure you of your fear of women. Suffice it to say you need to consider that you may be suffering from a persecution complex.

You may have many problems in life but I can assure you they are not caused by a fringe minority of any kind (feminists or not).

There are -ists of many kinds: communists, fascists, feminists, zionists, masochists, you name it. I dislike them all but I'm not going to commit suicide just because they are there.

Your Mary Daly (never heard of her before) is dead. She can't hurt you now any more than Immanuel Kant.

Harriet Harman is a control freak just like the rest of the Labour leadership. If she is also a feminist that's like a terminal cancer sufferer having hemmoroids - irrelevant for the outcome.

Vladimir Plouzhnikov

Re: OK...

"Feminism is a socio-political movement."

It is a fringe socio-political movement. The one even much more marginal than BNP. Basically irrelevant.

To think that men are under attack and are a target of global female conspiracy and that women are out there to exploit the innocent angelic men for their sperm and money is not a political stance but is simply a psychosis.

You have nutcases of all sorts among people of both sexes, yet the majority are normal and just get on with their lives. To be so afraid of some extreme tail percentile is nonsensical.

Vladimir Plouzhnikov

No opinion or conjecture?

"All this is because of the systematic assault on men conducted by feminists over the last 3 or so decades."

"Of course, the feminazis (a surprising number of whom are traitorous "manginas")..."

Hey, Music Industry. You're suing the wrong people

Vladimir Plouzhnikov

@Bucky 2

When you talk about goods like TVs etc you must remember that there is competition in that markets - between manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers - they all want your custom, you can shop around and choose.

With "intellectual" property you are dealing with monopolies. Anticompetitive and restrictive market practices which are illegal elsewhere are taken as given the moment you mention "copyright".

"Piracy" is the natural reaction of the buyers against the monopoly of the sellers. It is impossible to avoid or to eliminate. Any restrictive measures in any market lead to inevitable appearance of corresponding black markets. Ration the food - you get food black market. Put excise on tobacco - you get cigarettes black market. Do the same with fuel - you get petrol black market...

I think the delta should be of higher angle (lower aspect ratio). Either that or consider adding large winglets.
