Google robo-car suffers brain freeze after seeing hipster cyclist

Dan Paul

Re: The way forward is simple... Okay Smartypants

How is the well deserved, tongue in cheek, comment by Vlad "Poisonous"? Just because he's talking about YOU? Feeling bereft, diddums?

As far as I can see, it is a well deserved response to the arrogant, narcissistic, rude, law breaking, cyclists that infest the roads. If you are a jerk then be prepared to reap what you sow and meet Darwin personally!

Stop with the "Socially Unacceptable" PC bullcrap! Everyone has a right to express an opinion and these cyclists deserve a negative one. Take some PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. That doesn't take a "village".

People don't have to kowtow to the religion of political correctness, they just have to use some common sense and a little "gray matter".

That alone will prevent it (gray matter) being splattered all over the highway.

Dan Paul

Maybe you "Entitled" cyclists....

should be a little more cautious and follow the rules of the road better and drivers might have less anger at cyclists of any kind.

ALL of you arrogant idiots feel like you can ride or pass anywhere on the road and drivers are just supposed to somehow miraculously avoid you and if you were a motorcyclist and rode like that would be pulled over and ticketed by the cops. Not enough bicyclists are ticketed for their traffic infractions as it is, do you want Darwin to solve that for you?

When you are at an intersection keep in line with the vehicle ahead of you and stop riding in peoples blind spots, wait your turn just like an automobile must if you have to share the road with one. Stop cutting around vehicles like a bike messenger and they will be less able to hit you. SIGNAL your direction, or the driver has no idea where you are going and YOU are responsible if they hit you. I never see that.

The roads are designed for Autos. They pay the taxes that provide upkeep for the roadways. YOU DON'T! The most any registration for a bicycle pays for is tracking down the owner if lost or stolen.

The vehicle that weighs the most is also the most difficult to stop. An Ocean Liner can't stop on a dime for a sailboat. The larger vessel has the right of way.

In similar fashion, your little toy has no chance when being struck by a car so you should yield to the larger vehicle, especially when you are about to tempt fate and argue with the laws of physics. The same rule applies to autos versus trucks (if you value your life).

You can argue the laws of Man and God all you want to but the laws of Physics are incontrovertible.

Try using some common sense instead of your "entitled" arrogance and "righteous indignation" (puke voluminously) and you may cause less grief and survive longer.

Re: Pro (DUH!)

That's how you use a search engine, you keep delineating the who, what, where, when and why till you narrow 10,000,000 hits down to what you are looking for.

What the children at the EUC don't understand is that the three w's in a URL stand for... the WORLD WIDE WEB! Guess they only want the EWW. How apropos?

When you search with ANY engine, you search the whole frikkin WORLD and that includes Google results,if you CHOOSE to use Google.

If using GOOGLE is so "difficult" to understand, there is always Bing or some other search engine. Google doesn't prevent you from using them unlike some operating system manufacturers I can think of.

Re: TAKE THE MONEY

It seems that Obama and the whole $15 minimum wage crew calls that a "Career", so why not me? And you say we Americans don't understand satire. Now I just wish we had a President that understood business or even anything at all.

No kidding these are "Starter Jobs" but someone has to provide housing that is affordable enough for people with even those meager paychecks to live in or there won't be any fast food or convenience stores to work in.

Truth be told, years ago McDonalds in Massachusetts ALREADY put up it's employees in small motels during the week and rent free to boot. And they paid better than minimum wages.

In 1977, I worked at a Burger King in Vail, Colorado slinging burgers and lived on the side of the mountain under a tarp.

Minimum Wage was $2.30 per hour and we were paid almost $7 per hour because of "free market forces". And guess what, the price wasn't significantly higher for the food.

Re: Woah. Thank $DEITY for $REDACTED Freedom of the Press

So the outright lies and deliberate attempts to rabble rouse by MSNBC and CNN get a pass? I find them to be more entertainment than news any day.

For all you out there in La La Land who didn't know, trustworthy "Journalism" is dead now and MSNBC, Disney, and NBC are at the forefront of why. Why "report" the news when you can just make it up or even worse, make it happen? Creating drama can create not only website traffic but cause bullets to fly. One day, they'll get caught inciting a riot... Ooops, too late. They are caught up in a vicious cycle of "likes" being more important than truth.

All news media have an agenda now that colors the whole tone of their reporting. Used to be "Just the facts, Ma'am. Now it's "Does it follow the template we got from Obama or Hillary?"

Everything you see on TV can be manipulated in too many ways to consider. If you want the "real" news you have to look at it all in any form or source.

And most importantly, you have to make up YOUR OWN MIND!

Home Office seeks advice on Police Radio omnishambles

Dan Paul

Typical Government Procurement....

Typical for the Government to ask for technology that doesn't exist and make unreasonable demands on it that stretch the very limits of the physics involved.

Radio is NOT the same as Cellular transmission regardless of what some "Luvvie" said at the last charity event.

Police or other emergency radio is usually much higher broadcast power than any cellphone technology, both at the handset and at the tower. That's why it works inside buildings when commercial phones struggle to get any signal. If you had that power in a cellular handset it would overwhelm the entire cell.

Conversely, Radio does not do Data in the sense of what you can send or receive on a smartphone.

There are no commercially available "phones" yet that do both in a single product.

Writing an RFP for technology that does not already exist is a recipe for disaster and/or financial ruin or both. Expecting that your RFP will bring a "COTS" solution when there is no such technology is the height of ignorance.

Apple tries to patent facial recognition

Dan Paul

Facial Recognition?

The entire security camera & security software business has been involved in Facial Recognition for many years. All those companies have been vigorously protecting their intellectual property. Since there are so many involved it seems very unlikely that there is no prior art of how to recognize faces with cameras and software.

Unless the USPTO still thinks you can patent anything by tacking the words "on a mobile phone" onto the prior work.

Alibaba shares down as growth slows to a continental creep

Dan Paul

A post China world....?

Hmmm, let's see Alibaba sees slowing, Google is slowing and changed into Alphabet, China devalues it's Yuan by 4% publicly and perhaps more privately, Foxconn leaves China for India, economic growth around the world is no longer what it once was, the whole phone industry and PC/Tablet industry just knocked their expected earnings into a cocked hat.

What is really happening? Who or what sucked all the steam out of the economy? Did all the "Stimulus" money blow away? Uncertainty about Greece? Too many worldwide social entitlements and nothing to pay for them?

If I was a pessimist I'd say that we're headed for that recession we've been printing money hand over fist to stave off. BTW, printing money without something back it up is about the same as devaluing currency. Too many government doing that to ignore the results.

Realistically, it seems that we've reached market saturation of almost all electronic or hard goods as they are not wearing out and there is no compelling reason to buy new ones (Not even "One more thing"), have reached advertising saturation for companies like Google and since hardly anyone is buying new stuff, fewer companies have advertising budgets to spend.

Hillary Clinton kept top-secret SIGINT emails on her home email server

Dan Paul

It proves again that Hillarity is a liar and can't be trusted

There is a huge list of lies Hillary has told and this email server issue is only one of them.

This indicts the entire Demoncratic party as they are supporting this lying thief.

To my understanding they only sampled 40 emails of several million and found 4 of those to be top secret. That's 10% so expect the actual number of TS emails will be much higher.

If you or I had done what Hillary did, we'd be looking at a long prison sentence!

Isn't the ability to spy on the user pretty much demanded by damn near every app out there anyway?

It's time for Google to take that ability away from the APP developer community.

Permissions belong only in the hands of the phone OWNER, IE ME!

A weather app does not need access to my contacts, photos, texts, email, etc. etc. etc. Obvious misuse of personal info should mean permanent banning from the app store, inadvertent misuse should mean not uploading product on the app store until you PROVE there are no issues with 3rd party verification.

Re: Spy agencies doing illegal things (What does that have to do with the article?)

Preventing illegal immigrants from reaching your shores is not racism! Why do you inflate the issue? Seems YOU are the Racist!

It's preventing a mass invasion of people who don't belong in your country no matter who they are or what "rights" YOU think they have. These are not "Refugees", they are illegal immigrants.

If they don't like where they live, they need to change their own country instead of trying to invade another. The US or Australia are not responsible for supporting non-citizens for any reason.

If they want to immigrate properly, they have to respect and follow the laws of the country they wish to enter. Then they aren't illegal anymore.

If they can't follow the law then they don't belong. Period

Re: Only to be expected (For good reasons)

Hillarity Clinton has repeatedly shown that she can't tell the truth since the days in Arkansas with Whitewater and scoffs at any law that might apply to her.

Most recently at the State Department she was deeply involved in a "pay to play" scheme where anyone who wanted some favorable decision from the state department had to hire Bill Clinton as a paid speaker. Let's not even get into the fact that she was derelict and negligent in her duties at the State Department, deleted emails from a server she legally wasn't supposed to use because they would prove "the haters" as you call them are completely correct about what happened at the Libyan Consulate.

Oh, and by the way she lies saying she's "just like us" when the Clintons are worth over a hundred million dollars.

I looked at the internet usage for each of their logins and when I began to notice they were going to porn sites, spoke to each of them about it. Actually, it presented a learning and bonding opportunity for all of us.

I don't rely on a company, software or a government to tell me or my kids how to act. That's the parents job. My kids turned out fine and we still laugh about getting caught. No one has been traumatized or turned into a pervert. They are both married and have children of their own now.

Intel doubles its bounty for women and ethnic minorities

Dan Paul

Reverse Discrimination

If Intel doubles the finders fee to $4,000 they could just as well fund more education programs.

However, we have had 50 years of entitlements for people who wasted most of them. College Scholarships in particular. If you have good grades and are a minority, you'll get one for sure. The operative words are "Good Grades". If you coasted through high school with a "C" or less average you may not get a scholarship, but you still stand a better chance than a white person as the system is weighted in your favor.

The left perpetuates the myth that without quotas no one has an opportunity to work as a minority. Nothing could be further from the truth as in reality these quotas diminish your reputation. IE you just got the job because you were a minority, not because you were qualified. Happens every day. All you really need to get a job is a good work ethic and some opportunity.

Seen this hard quota thing happen in state & county facilities where the new hire can't even type or spell properly but got hired only because they are black. Everyone else has to compensate for the new hire (doing their work for them) and often a long term employee gets the boot to make room for the quota hire. The feds need to stop telling businesses and municipal governments who they must hire.

ALL hiring quotas are reverse discrimination. Get rid of them!

Simply hire the best fit qualified person to do the job. Specify what you want and select the candidate based on only that criteria.

As a candidate, Race, Creed, Sex shouldn't enter into the equation but wearing them as arrogant chips on your shoulder isn't going to help your chances in the job market.

Viagra found in Chinese 'Kung Fu rice wine'

Taking the "piss" perhaps?

Drinking water plants all over the world fail to treat water for a wide variety of drugs such as antibiotics, birth control, pain medication, etc that people excrete every day. Why would they make a special effort to treat for Viagra?

The reason is simple, the Viagra is already in the "drinking water" and the batch of wine had drinking water in it.

Dan Paul

Re: 'kin typical

You know, it gets rather tiresome when you and others make sweeping generalizations about Americans that could certainly be applied to every Brit tourist I ever heard. Loudly complaining about how the food here is different than that at home is a bit of an oxymoron isn't it? It's going to be different, it's another country. I think the behavior even made it into a Monty Python sketch. And yes before some commentard mentions it, I already know there are some Americans that deserve the label.

How about we put the gratuitous disrespect to pasture? Or do you just prefer being a snarky dick?

This world would be a lot further ahead if instead of complaining about the differences, we started celebrating the similarities. After all, we are all related in some way whether you like it or not, and the US is more of a cultural melting pot than Europe ever will be. Every family here started over there, someplace.

Re: spin drift. (Coriolis Effect?)

I have been involved in flow measurement technology for 31 years and have a rather good understanding of the Coriolis effect and it is already being compensated for in many ballistics calculations particularly as it applies to spin drift of bullets which is what the article is about.

Complain all you want about my mention of rotation in drains and toilets, I only used that the give some reference to the uninitiated. You will note that the Coriolis effect does affect the way large weather systems rotate between the north and south hemispheres.

At several hundred yards or more, the effect on a bullet is significant.

Below are only a few links to pages dealing with the subject out of some 10,000 hits for "Coriolis effect in Ballistics"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jX7dcl_ERNs

Dan Paul

Re: spin drift. (Coriolis Effect?)

The coriolis effect is a possible suspect as it exerts a small force on an object towards the right in the Northern Hemisphere and towards the left in the Southern Hemisphere. That force will change as the mass of the object changes and this is in keeping with the larger bullet having greater deflection than the smaller one. This is used in many brands of mass flow meters.

It is also why toilet water rotates in a different direction for Aussies (counterclockwise) versus Yanks (clockwise)

Color me unconvinced there is any need for this, there will be a significant decrease in power efficiency and a huge increase in cost. They already have designed plug in stations with billing systems cheap enough to place at most parking lots.

World's worst exploit kit now targeting point-of-sale systems

Re: Angler exploits two Adobe Flash vulnerabilities

They don't. Flash is simply a point of entry to the overall network. So a "Luser" clicks on an infected Flash file (How many Russian language emails with .zip attachments can you get before you figure something is up?), is on the same network as the POS systems and the exploit works it's way through to the POS equipment.

The real issue is why is there a reason to have the POS directly connected to a network that is facing the Internet. It should be on it's own segregated network. In fact, I wouldn't trust a VPN or use a subnet.

Just take them off the regular network entirely. The vendor who manages the POS should be required to come to the site and download any consumption data rather than using the Internet.

Bloke cuffed for blowing low-flying camera drone to bits with shotgun

Dan Paul

Re: Na Na Nana Na @ShadowDragon8685 PRIVATE AIRSPACE!

The drone pilot got what he deserved, the home owner has a right to privacy in his own yard. Let alone that I believe you have private airspace over your own property.

It is quite illegal in many states to point ANY surveillance camera on to anothers private property. The drone had a camera. The homeowner was concerned that the drone was "perving" on his daughters.

Most states have "Peeping Tom" laws as well. I say the drone pilot was guilty of BOTH infractions as well as criminal trespass. The gun owner was within his rights to shoot the drone down as it was just a "proxy" for a Peeping Tom.

Hell, we have hail here that frequently gets to the size of baseballs here and that's way more dangerous than No. 8 Birdshot. The homeowner shouldn't get charged with ANYTHING, even the offense of discharging a firearm within city limits which all towns have. He was defending his property and daughters against a potential pervert.

I am claiming private airspace rights up to 400 feet above my property so NO DRONES will overfly the boundaries of my property line.

Hurrah! Windfarms produce whopping one per cent of EU energy

Dan Paul

@ScottBrokell

Stop blaming the consumers and start blaming the producers and the grid providers.

We are NOT going to "put on another sweater" for the sole purpose of perpetuating the "Green" fantasy. My refrigerator will not be part of your load shedding program, nor will my lights and TV.

These schemes ONLY benefit the producers, not the consumers.

The Sun only shines on part of the Earth, part of the day. Then the Earth rotates and the Sun shines somewhere else. When that happens the wind speed decreases making wind turbines go off sync with their power frequencies.

Therefore, the only way for Humankind to benefit from Solar/Wind renewables is to create a worldwide electric grid system that can compensate for the way power availability from multiple sources changes rapidly. Even existing grid technology is not enough to compensate the system for the way electrical production from Wind and Solar increase and decrease. Thus, Wind and Solar producers are paid NOT to produce power when it upsets the grid.

The fact is that there is NO WAY that any "worldwide electric power grid" can happen in anyones lifetime. Just look at the gas pipeline issues from Russia and the politics there, let alone those in the Middle East or Africa. The very second someone's political nose is bent out of shape they will take their "ball and go home".

That leaves it down to individual nations to take care of their own power needs and that means most industrial countries will need Nuclear power IF the whole purpose of this exercise is to reduce the output of CO2.

If we are actually being honest about it, we will find that a combination of energy tactics (including fossil fuels) will likely win out over time but clamoring for us to reduce our personal consumption of energy and failing to address all the operative issues is more "pie in the sky" unworkable BS.

as follows taken from the Oxford English Dictionary website

"Global varieties of English

The territorial expansions of the United Kingdom between the late 16th and early 18th centuries, and of the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries carried the English language around the world. In each country where English is spoken, whether as the primary national language or as a secondary language alongside others, it has changed and developed in the context of its new surroundings, not only through loanwords, but also through localized neologisms and changes in the usage of common English words."

Of particular note, please notice the opening phrase "Global varieties of English" and the last sentence of the paragraph. And the source? The Oxford English Dictionary.

You don't have a corner on the language, its usage or spelling anymore. It has been commoditized by sheer usage and changes too frequently to be locked in to your ideals anymore. So say your own word "boffins."

Re: The super continent Pangea and Gondwana

Did you actually READ where I wrote " it is difficult to tell exactly when they got here but a much more plausible explanation for any common genetic markers is that their primitive ancestors (carried the same genes) traveled much shorter distances back when the tectonic plates were much closer."

No, I didn't think so. "Mankind" at the time of Pangea was likely just a type of primitive Lemur but certainly capable of carrying "common genetic markers".

Were you there? Do you have a firsthand account you can relate? Do you have an actual satellite map that shows the position of the continents at throughout time?

The term "Closer" is certainly a relative operator here. Didn't need to be exact distances except closer than a whole present day ocean. If you admit "it helped a lot of other species" why not the predecessors of mankind?

If you don't, then my hypothesis is no less valid than anyone elses. AFTR, no one has any proof it's wrong either.
