Retiring greybeards force firms to retrain Java, .NET bods as mainframe sysadmins

System z training

Interestingly, IBM is no longer in the business of directly providing training. If you go to their training and education website you'll find the courses are offered through several vendors, but not IBM. They have a university initiative which provides prepared curriculum and system access to enable schools to offer courses is assembler, COBOL, DB2 and the like. I suspect that the results are mixed as I'm seeing some of these programs being shuttered. SHARE has its own zGen inititive. In a recent web conference the 20 somethings had some interesting insights. All mentioned that they thought a college education was not necessary to the job of sysadmin (sysprog) and as I recall at least one and maybe more stated that they prefered working with the green screen rather than a GUI, in part for the arcane nature of it, but also its efficiency.

"Moving back to mainframes would mean getting away from all the MS shit that I have to deal with day-in, day-out."

Wrong. All the front end pieces are java. You'll be spending all your time figuring out what is going wrong with the Rube Goldberg connection system this time...

Tata says USA rejecting HALF of Indians' work visa requests

DB2DBA

Re: STOP *ALL* H1B

I agree with the sentiment but, it's not gonna happen. What should happen however is that issuance of H1Bs should be tied to the unemployment rate. Once the rate falls below 3 percent, H1Bs are allowed. For each additional 1 percent drop in unemployment, the number of visas issued are increased by a fixed amount.

COBRA health insurance

As a note, COBRA is just a continuation of the employer's health care plan, but this coverage is not paid for by the employer. The full burden of cost is on the former employee, often hundreds of $ for the employee alone or well over $1000 per month for those with dependents.

DB2DBA

Not enough

While it sounds like a lot of money, you would still pay out of pocket unless you have only one phone line. Generally, the cost to break your contract is $200 per line. If you have a family plan the charge is separate for each line in the plan. What is needed is for all providers to abolish contracts. AT&T's rollover minutes should be enough incentive to stay there. T-Mobile's lower cost is an incentive to others. Verizon's claim to nearly universal service is an incentive to those who need such coverage. (Obviously V would have to improve their game to keep customers based on previous remarks.) Sprint might need to bring back unlimited data to compete. Just offer people a reason to stay instead of handcuffs.

Your tax dollars at work

Considering all the resources NSA has available, shouldn't they be decrypting the CL key(s) and making them publicly available? Then at least taxpayers would get something useful from the money they've spent.

RBS MELTDOWN LATEST: 'We'll be the bank we should be ... next YEAR maybe'

DB2DBA

A question of (data) integrity

I find this statement by an RBS spokesman (quoted in The Guardian) to be telling: "If any customer is experiencing issues they should get in touch with our call centres or come into our branches, where our staff will be ready to help." This suggests that they don't have a handle on the data loss and need customers to identify the errors for them.

IT MELTDOWN ruins Cyber Monday for RBS, Natwest customers

DB2DBA

Appear to be two problems here

First was a failure that blocked customer access to their accounts, then secondly a failure in recovering from the first failure, highlighted by the loss of (what should have been) previously committed transactions (i.e. recent credits are missing. Is anyone missing debits?) As a major mainframe user RBS is likely to be running one or both of IBM's DBMSes, IMS or DB2. The hallmark of these systems is data integrity with recoverabilty. Expertise however in using them is still a necessity no matter how advanced the system becomes. The loss of data shows that this skillset may be lacking at RBS.

Idealism

"ALL laws and policy should be subject to a public voting system, (after all this is democracy right?) otherwise you will always be at the whim of a select few."

It doesn't work that way. Those in power will do whatever it takes to stay in power, and those willing to pay for access to power reap the benefit relative to what they pay. "The best Congress money can buy" as the saying goes.

Referendum follows the same rules. Look to California for how this works. "The people" with enough money can get their initiatives on the ballot and voted on by the small percentage of the population who registers to vote and then actually does.

A cynical view, yes, but this is how modern government works.

Peter Goldmark

Goldmark, who was hired by CBS in 1936 as its chief TV engineer, enjoyed classical music and was frustrated with having to flip the records over every few minutes. He set about solving the problem for himself and thus we have (had) the long playing record. His target length was for the record to play long enough to encompass an entire symphony on one record. He also moved the disk from shellac to vinyl, thus making it much less breakable (although not as easy to glue back together...) Interestingly, Sony president Norio Ohga had a similar motivation for the development of the CD, setting its length so that it would encompass Beethoven's 9th in its entirety.
