Other venerable institutions have been falling over themselves to disgrace themselves too. Notable and spectacularly jarring examples of this present some spurious and flawed modelling based on spurious and flawed data as indisputable scientific proof that we're all doomed epidemic include the BBC and The Royal Society.
I believe there are dark (i.e. probably political) forces behind this. I'd love to know who comprised the clique that informed the BBC it was to be the mouthpiece of this movement, but, alas, it seems to have been decided for me that such information is none of my business.
Alternatives that might work are playing music, as I've heard it does effect the growth of plants, I just don't remember which way it does it.
I hear that classical is the best for making them flourish. Something like Agadoo or The Birdy Song should be enough to quickly eradicate even the most pernicious nettle patch... but wouldn't it be difficult to confine between the rows? You could turn your entire garden into a wasteland as well as exposing yourself and your neighbours to mortal risk. Just imagine your ear defenders came loose!
I can (sort of) see the potential appeal to farmers: If you're trundling around in a tractor anyway then what's a few extra kW here and there?.. and offset by agrochem savings too. ...and I suppose exploding wildlife on the spot could be kinder than dousing it with some Nazi nerve toxin and leaving the survivors to creep off to get cancer... but...
A home version??!?! lmao
Other than...
1. Providing young boys with an excellent new way to do unthinkable things to wildlife and pets
2. Doing wonderful things for the utility corporations' bottom line
3. Providing A&E staff with a whole new class of amusing "the fuckwit had assploded his foot!" anecdotes
...how is this better than a hoe?
Of course "this is all just manufactured by Apple's marketing department to increase the hype in the media" - it's a "news" article based on what was originally a formal Apple PR interview and was subsequently amended at the interviewee's request!
What I want to know is why the fawning hacks feel compelled to regurgitate this drivel ad nauseam
Earth to hacks: This "Apple might be thinking" crap isn't news!
while McAfee (the company, not the nominative fugitive)
Oh dear, oh dear... only a hapless blogger for El Reg could so thoroughly balls up such a golden opportunity to deploy eponymous.
In the article, McAfee (the company) is the nominative case as it's McAfee (the company) you're describing as having "maintained its long campaign..."
Surely all that's needed is some sort of context filter... to suppress the profanity when telling IBMers that they're full of bullshit but favour it while Whatson's down the pub with its drunken mates chatting about the fine pair jugs on the till behind the bar...
Something along the lines of using the ratio of words from UD to words from reputable texts in the input to colour the output might be a good start?
Will we get our snowy banner this year?
I fear not.
Last I heard, the Google Corporation Inc had "invented" and "patented" that sort of topical/seasonal alteration to a website's livery. So all such frivolity is now effectively illegal. Unless you want to take your chances against the amassed legal might of Google Inc.
So if you want to Christmas up the masthead on your website, you just have to ask yourself. "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do you, punk?
Our beloved commentards certainly do not hesitate to make their voices heard. Whether it be insightful analysis, a helpful email to the author or stinging criticism, I learn a lot from our readers. A lot of interesting tools and services I ultimately adopt I heard about in the forums first. So to the our readers, thank you.
Jesus! Someone's hit the Christmas spirits hard and heavy this year. Either that or there's some malignant purpose lurking behind this revolting display of sycophantic drivel... planning to charge a subscription next year? I certainly hope not! Not when the best you can do is churn out crap like this:
stepped up to the plate
What the hell is that? Some obscure colloquial idiom hidden in parochial dialect? Call your self a journalist? Learn to speak English man - say what you mean FFS! Go and have a long hard look at that "revolting display of sycophantic drivel" and consider is comprehensively reciprocated by this snivelling commentard.
Merry Christmas to you and yours
Eye bleach? I had to read that sentence three times to decipher the brutally mangled grammar. Now I need brain bleach.
I've still got the offending snippet in clipboard - in case no one else had cried for mercy:
...offenders off of online games...
FFS El Reg, It's Christmas. Show us some mercy!

It's an imposter I say.
This is no amanfromMars!
I declare this to be a cad and and bounder. An imposter no less!
The insufferable interloper has assumed the title "amanfromMars 1" with the malignant intent of bamboozling and deceiving us.
Well you have not fooled me young Turk. The south lawn at dawn.
>The institute’s sixth annual Patent Power scorecard ranks firms according to the size and quality of their US patent portfolios in categories such as semiconductor manufacturing, software, computer systems and electronics. Each category lists between 16 and 20 firms.
but then...
>One of the most telling observations is that only two Chinese firms appear on any of the relevant tech categories – Huawei, which filed 411 US patents in 2011, and Lenovo, which filed 81.
So which is it you're actually talking about? Portfolios? (Patents granted and perhaps pending) or "Fillings"? (gross application submissions regardless of outcome)
The devil's in the details you know. I can think of a reason why Chinese companies might be getting fewer patents granted by USPTO

>So what you are saying is that wiki isn't neutral at all and holds grudges against those who criticise it.
Interesting. I'd never thought of it like that but I suppose most of the contributors from the time will have moved on from their fiddling and/or forgotten about the incident... meanwhile the wiki never forgets... so it could well still be "holding a grudge" so to speak, or at least the remnants of one.
The article I was recollecting was something of an exposé with, if I recall correctly, a particularly condescending review of the shenanigans of a crook with a penchant for warping "reality" via "sock puppets". It caused quite a fuss over there which prompted a follow-up over here. The wikifiddlers as they were known at the time responded by turning The Reg's page on Wikipedia into something quite derogatory, then locking it, then adding El Reg to their naughty list ("list of sources which are not reputable and not allowed to be cited" or something like that)
I've had a quick scan over there but can't see any trace of the locking or any conspicuous slurs, so I'm wondering if their "history" of the event has been cleaned up a bit. Might have a deeper look into it when I get a chance. I'm pretty sure I took a screen grab or two at the time - such was the level of entertainment.
If anyone's interested in having a poke around, this is where it all happened:
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Register&action=history&year=2007&month=12&tagfilter=
There's even a contribution (authentic - in his inimitable dialect) from amanfromMars!
The Reg article which set it all off was (comments are worth a look too):
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/12/06/wikipedia_and_overstock/
"Newspapers articles have always been acceptable sources for Wikipedia."
Not El Reg. This particular vessel has been regarded by the Wiki-jobs as the work of Satan for some time. At least since their "naked short selling" débâcle.
Anyone know if they're over their sulk yet? (If not, I doubt this article will have helped get us off their naughty list)
What's that?... US gov is running around "fining" foreign companies BEEEEELIONS on much more spurious grounds, but fines good ol' US of A banks change so small they wouldn't bother to bend to pick it up if they'd dropped it in the street.
So what's new? It's called "protectionism" and they've been at it flagrantly for 200 years. Keep up will you!
Altavista was Google. There just weren't many of us around then - so it was a much smaller Google.
I can still remember Compaq fucking it up... the screencaptures even brought back the horrible sinking feeling that accompanied the "oh no, it's gone forever" I thought when their "portal" imposter loaded. That's when the "noise" was introduced. It was never usable again :o(
I idly wondered at the time who'd bought it and why they were buggering it up. I'd never made the connection with the Digital/Compaq thing! The foul hand of Compaq is all too obvious with hindsight.
If Compaq had never got their claws into AltaVista I'm sure it'd still be our "Google". Google just happened to pop up at the right moment to fill the gap.
On the off-chance that you're drinking the piss not taking it...
I was referring to "Woodpecker" the Soviet ICBM detection RADAR, rather than "Woodpecker" the fermented apple abonination. I doubt the emissions arising from the latter are detected more than a few hundred metres from source - under normal conditions.
I doubt there's anywhere in the universe distant enough to escape the emissions from that thing... and once the signals reach a civilisation advanced enough, it won't be long before they send someone out to shut us the fuck up.
<------------ your great grandchildren are dead
Erm, mind if I ask why I'm receiving such a sound thrashing dear commentardrades?
Has there been a sudden outbreak of shooting the messenger? Or are the PC nut-jobs (that's politically correct NOT personal computer) objecting en-masse to my calling them "mindless"? Or are there other forces at work?
I'm not one to quote the wackopedia myself but I see a kind Samaritan by the name of John was good enough to offer it as an elaboration. I can't help feeling at least a tiny bit vindicated in my describing the use of "niggardly" as "controversial", by the fact that wackopedia maintains a page entitled "Controversies about the word niggardly." I also can't help feeling a small twinge of envy at the blemishless string of upvotes he's been receiving for backing me up, while you go on kicking the shit out of me.
Could someone who's taken the trouble to pause in passing to give me a kick spare a further moment to stop and tell me why????
