Microsoft may slash price of Windows 8.1 on cheap 'slabs

Babbit55

Re: When are they going to get it in their thick skulls...

Got to admit, Win 8 on a touch device is a nice experience, just the store badly needs apps. Having moved from my many years of using Android on my personal phone and having an iPhone for work when I moved to a Nokia 520 I don't think I will look back at Android as Win 8 feels fluid and runs much better than my Android phones ever had!

Re: "none of them have had any security problems"

The single best way to keep a network secure is to keep EVERTHING up to date, if you cannot update the OS then you will very quickly have a site full of security holes, it will just be a matter of time till you are compromised (if you aren't already)

Security threats nowadays don't scream out, they hide and do not want to be found. AV alone will not keep your machines safe

Re: Why I "bought" an Iphone when my HTC went tits up

I think your problem was buying HTC, they are quite poor build quality wise, I would say though that iPhone was not the only choice for high end smart phone. When my HTC Desire died on me I had a look around and picked up the Nokia 520, I really like it, runs nicely and the apps work well, overall I may be a bit of a windows phone convert.

I used to have an iPhone for work and after countless "Called Failed" messages when swapping from 3G to edge or not having at least 3 bars I was glad to be rid of it

iPhone slips in Europe as Windows Phone claims OVER 10% market share

Babbit55

Re: Windows Phone vs. iPhone

I have to admit I am the same, having used Android now since like 2009 and having used a host of devices and having a Nexus 7, my HTC bit the dust and I only have about 6 months left on my contract so I decided to buy a 520 outright and get a cheaper contract on renewal or if I hated Win8 go back to android however even with my investment I have to admit I really like the 520 and I am even considering upgrading to the 920 come renewal!

All in all I am impressed with the windows phone offerings it is a very smooth OS though it could do with a few more apps

Babbit55

Give nokia a try. I have to say considering the power in my Lumia 520 it feels like the smoothest and most fluid phone i have used to date and I have had both android and apple phones

Xbox One launch date REVEALED - and it's on the 360's birthday

Babbit55

Answer me this, can you do any of that with Steam? the 1 day thing I agree was too short, 14 days to a month would be fine. A purely digital market place would hopefully see game prices come down significantly much like they did on Steam and have on Origin!

People not wanting to take the step forward into the digital age has put us back 10 years. You think physical media for gaming will last past this gen? I certainly don't think it will

Re: re: like the otherOS stuff

I never even owned a PS3, so I don't miss it I am just saying while Microsoft may not be the best, Sony don't exactly smell of roses here and are well known for their love of DRM.

As for the Kinnect, I got one for my 360 and it is great fun, will be looking forward to what happens with the new version especially once my little boy gets bigger and can use it too.

Noone is likely to rock the boat right at release, knowing Sony this kind of stuff will be snook in once the PS4 is sittled, like the Other OS stuff.

Bradley Manning sentenced to 35 years in prison

Babbit55

Re: No....

Let me take my stance on this, I am on the fence. Sure he stole material and released it for whatever his reasons may be this is espionage and theft HOWEVER, it was also the act of a whistleblower showing the wrong doings of the government. A tricky situation indeed, He should serve however the credit for what he has already endured should be much higher.

Being fair, 35 years (33 after the reduction) from 90 is actually not to bad. He will get out of prison in his life time this way!

As for double dipping Sony will be charging to use online services with the PS4 too

Hey, Silicon Valley milky drink fans: Starbucks intros wireless charging

Babbit55

Re: why the downvote?

well actually Nikola Tesla was working on a tower that would provide electricity to the world and was stopped simply because he couldn't fund this and the electricity companies released they couldn't actually charge for it either!

Edison actually tried hard to discredit Tesla a number of times, he actually told the US military that a particular invention of his had no practical use (Radar!!!)

Sony sucker-punches Xbox on price, specs, DRM-free gaming

Babbit55

Re: Well done Sony.

The Xbox one idea of digital sales limited resale ect could go 2 ways.

Positive:- we get a "Steam" type offering with lower cost games and great sales with some pro owned market style stuff on both our Physical and Digital titles, and lets face it will that be different on the Steam box when that comes out?

Negative:- we get gouged and have to pay £50+ for games we cannot resale.

If the forma happens it could be good for Microsoft and us gamers and lets face it who in general doesn't like steam? Or the Latter that could end badly for Microsoft

Also on Steam brand new titles come out for significantly less AND they have awesome sales. Will we see 75% reduction on games for this? No, they will still be £45+

How Microsoft shattered Gnome's unity with Windows 95

Babbit55

Re: To be fair to MS...

Android has not "Won" the mobile war, it is just the current market leader in total volume, Apple still make the lions share of the profits (eroding though I am sure) and as like with Apple someone could come out with some good software and a compelling reason to get peoples attention and do the exact same as Android did to Apple to Android

Most mid range Sim free phones would be that expensive, high end phones are more than double that price, for example the S4 is almost £600!

on a contract you could get that for free on some of the lower tariffs.

You have to wonder what these hybrid devices count as. I am actually quite keen on something like a Asus Vivopad smart though it would need significantly more HDD space to replace my work machine.

Re: @Suricou Raven In a word...

As you say the extra electric used is likely to amount to peanuts, though if the stress of maxing your GPU's constantly over a 2 week period could have really shortened the life span of the card/s and maybe even blew a couple! And as you say, these are likely to not be cheap cards either!

Re: Why not...

Because would you use a program that maxed your VERY power hungry GPU (this is a competitive gaming program so the rigs will be monsters) constantly meaning the power bill was huge AND your VERY expensive GPU has its operating life shorted significantly

Review: Disgo 8400G 7.9in Android tablet

Babbit55

I have had a cheap unbranded Tablet before for sub £150, it was plagued with issues. Half the time you couldn't get wireless, it crashed randomly and the advertised 8 gig ended up being 4! It got returned for a full refund and I got a Nexus 7 instead, my personally experience would go with the old you get what you pay for.
