Namecheap users rage at domain transfer pain, but their supplier Enom blames... er, GDPR?

tentimes

I agree. Namecheap are the best reg I have found over the last 15 or so years, so I am sticking with them. I am not a huge fan of the new website though.

They keep you updated without pestering you and their systems are simple and relatively easy to use. I don't see how this is their fault - they have been caught out by someone else's stupidity.

The Notch contagion is spreading slower than phone experts thought

tentimes

The biggest problem with Android is this...

Operators not updating phones. LG are really bad for this. Samsung seem to be pretty good - I am still getting regular security updates for my S7.

IMHO we should start ranking the manufacturers on timely security updates and naming and shaming the ones that don't update their tat.

Namecheap offering FREE whoisguard

Is this the reason why Namecheap is offering me free anonymity? I thought there had to be some reason I was getting something "free" - seems they just don't want to be caught by the GDPR!

You know that silly fear about Alexa recording everything and leaking it online? It just happened

tentimes

Total overreaction going on here!

Guys, guys!

It happened once out of billions of conversations. We've all seen Alexa light up and start to question us or say something non-sensical after hearing a snippet of our conversation and thinking it was for her (she does get lonely!). I simply tell her to STFU bitch and then she won't send your speech snippet anywhere on your contacts list.

Seriously, how often is this happening? Probably more chance of winning the lottery.

Advanced VPNFilter malware menacing routers worldwide

tentimes

How the hell do I know if I am affected?

Some routers of some brands are affected? How the hell is that supposed to help. What if it is 1 TP-Link router of 117 types that is affected?

Would it not make more sense to give people a tool to check if their router is affected? I don't want to reset and then have to reprogram my router from scratch thanks.

About to install the Windows 10 April 2018 Update? You might want to wait a little bit longer

tentimes

Try the Microsoft Windows Update REpair tool - it fixed my update problems.

tentimes

Near catastrophic update!

I just about got this installed without losing my machine. Twice I tried and twice the computer hung on a restart at "Updating windows 51%". I left it for six hours and nothing happened and I had to pull the power cord to turn it off. After that I had to rollback and repair.

To get the update to work I had to run the Microsoft Windows Update Repair Tool (downloaded from their website) and then run the update a third time for it to work.

Huge sigh of relief and glad I know what I am doing or I would have been shafted (like many a poor user out there I am sure).

HTC phone supremo leaves months after Google guts firm for best and brightest

Re: What a shame

The main guy is gone now though, the person that drove it and it is looking pretty gutted. I will be watching to see what HTC's next release is. Unless they can get the price down on the Vive, I think they are in trouble.

tentimes

What a shame

Does that mean they won't be actually making phones anymore at HTC? Such a shame. HTC virtually invented the original smartphones which were used by carriers to entice customers in. They then went out on their own with a string of great phones. I think they were the first ones with a real smartphone, not Apple.

Charles Stross is right.

Your friend/colleague has the right idea about world building. It is a laborious, intimate and requires you to expand your brain in space and time - i.e. think REALLY hard - possibly for years. And, to me, you have to do that before you really invest in any of your characters or ideas as EVERYTHING is a function of the world dynamics. And by World I really mean Universe. But worldbuilding can also turn into a neverending masturbation. I think you also need to have a conscious process running outside the worldbuilding to guide it and not have it be an end in itself. At least this is what I think and I haven't even written my first book yet. But I think I am at least partly correct.

They should nail them to the wall for this. My only reluctance in kicking them out of the country is that it gives more power to other CRA's, who will exploit customers on the back of it. My guess is they have all been hacked anyway, we just haven't heard about it (i.e. they haven't got caught).

Windows 10 love to see PC market grow again. Future iPhone to be clear. Elvis to re-appear

tentimes

Why the Windows 10 hate?

I don't get it. What's wrong with Windows 10? I use it fine, more productive than 7, looks better, runs faster, gets more out of the hardware. DX12. Apps that can run on the desktop so I can pin my twitter where I want it etc.

Right click on the start menu icon to get all the bits and bobs like control panel, command line, disk manager etc. Really easy. Works well with three monitors. Detects all hardware instantly and has a better hardware base than 7. I didn't have to go searching for drivers when I installed it.

So, what's not to like?

tentimes

Re: So what do they know that we don't know?

I think your premise is wrong.

I have been using Windows 10 for about a year now and find it to be an excellent OS, better than Windows 7 (which I also like). I really don't see the downsides to upgrading to 10, apart from the caveat that you always want a fresh install. An upgrade install is always asking for problems.

Then there is nothing he can hand over and he is effectively going to lose his rights regardless.

What then? No docs - anything they do to him he can surely sue them for?

Boffins supercharge the 'hosts' file to save users plagued by DNS outages

tentimes

Re: Missing the obvious solution?

What usually happens though is that Primary and Secondary DNS are provided by the ISP automatically to the modem/router. I would say this is the case in well over 90% of DNS's set.

If there was a simple system that backed up DNS records this would help.

Yes, maybe I am being silly and should go off now and set my DNS's manually?

BT's Openreach to hire 1,500 engineers

tentimes

Re: The Elephant in the room - PIA / FTTC/Vectoring by two or more Telcos.

I am not really understanding what you are saying. Do you mean that if someone gets FTTP installed in an exchange no other Telco can then do either FTTP or FTTC in that local exchange and BT are rolling FTTP out to take control of exchanges? I think I have it wrong but maybe you could explain a bit more?

It wouldn't surprise me if BT have outfoxed Ofcom again - they have been running rings round them for over 30 years.

tentimes

I know their first day is spent learning to put their finger up their ass, the training is a week long and they take people off the street for it.

tentimes

Will they stop sabotaging competitors lines?

After reading a LOT about Openreach's response to faults I believe they have been deliberately sabotaging competitor lines through policy and actions to undermine competitor offerings.

If you go onto any ISP forums in the UK you will see endless complaints of mistakes and actions taken by Openreach and their engineers. The ISP's are hamstrung by Openreach and totally beholden to them.

Having worked for BT, I am personally convinced that this was deliberate. I also changed to BT because of how Openreach dealt with problems on competitor ISPs network. Lo and behold I had only one problem in 5 years and Openreach had it resolved in an hour versus the weeks it would take for them to repair another ISP's problems (that are due to the BT network or equipment).

For the first time in five years I have now taken a leap of faith and am going to another ISP as a direct consequence of Openreach separating from BT. This whole changeover will be down to Openreach so I will see first hand if the changes mean anything. I have very little faith that I won't get screwed over and be without internet for weeks, but I live in hope.

I wonder if Openreach is now truly separate from BT.

Openreach to the installs & repairs - facours BT customers

Anyone who has ever had a broadband fault and is not with BT know the response they get when it isn't fixed "It's with BT Openreach Engineers" and they favour BT and leave the other competitors to rot. A good tactic to get people back on BT's network and that is what I did. Any fault I have since is fixed almost instantly (presumably by the same people).

So, it is WAY past time Openreach was separated.

Extradition to a Police State where slavery for black people still exists

I am totally against the extradition for computer misuse. For minor offences the should be a trial in absentia with any slap on the wrist to be served in the UK. I do not trust the US Jury system one iota after watching lots of documentaries on it. And they have a police state and jails almost exclusively for black people - slavery continues.
