Then we will not only need to worry about the frickin sharks with the frickin laser beams, the killer dolphins with explosives that escaped while horny a few months back but also the terrorist jelly fish pre-programmed to kill all infidels powered by a nuke!!!
So once there are OEM's who want to sell computers that ship with and run some form of open source software (ohh maybe in another 50-100 years) then the creators can put in a secure boot signed by the os provider and be happy. Until you have a mainstream request for your software don't bother because the majority oft the computer buying public could not and would not run any form of open source os distribution on their home computer.
Enough said....
To be honest just because apple and android phones sell more doesn't mean anything other than just that. Having been an iPhone and android user in the past I enjoy the experience with my Lumia 920 more than either one of those devices, I could also care less how much people want to say MSFT sucks as it does not affect me one iota.
It is funny though how the publicity war is fought and how propaganda is used. Finally, wasn't the article published in the NY Times and what does MSFT have to do with that??
I use windows 8 on my home desktop pc with a mouse and keyboard no touchscreen, I do not even have those apps on my start screen as I do not use them. I actually use my pc almost exactly the same way as I did my windows 7 pc except for a few free apps e.g. ESPN, USA Today, Tech Blogs etc.
Using my computer like this with windows 8 is actually by far a better experience than with windows 7 as I get the best of both worlds.
Love watching you guys get all frothy at the mouth as soon as someone mentions windows 8 and microsoft.
To @Eadon the troll judging a book by its cover is something a 4 year old might do, in the real world people actually try things and discover whether they like them or not then again you probably do not have the intelligence to try most things so.......
On the internet and google thinks they can reasonably expect a majority of major players to actually do this when it potentially could stop people reaching their sites.
I have to take a hit and pass it on, just can't imagine this happening.
Btw google thanks for letting me use your DNS servers though, it's appreciated :)
Reg writers seem to be about as trustworthy as a middle eastern dictator on a bender.....just because WP8's lifecycle ends (as do all major phone os revisions) does not mean they just say screw you now your on your own.
WP8 users will upgrade to the next revision and continue to receive support from there.
The amount of drivvel and rhetoric coming from this site is incredible, who the hell pays your salaries, you should be fired for writing garbage like this.
LOL @Knives&Faux if you mention that windows phone is actually good here you will be instantly downvoted and classes as a troll.
It is actually a sin on the register to say that anything produced by microsoft especially anything new e.g. windows 8, windows phone 8 is good.
Both continue to look at alternatives and support windows phone. Nothing is perfect whether that be apple, google, MSFT or BB but competition is good and I agree with your comments that windows phone is probably the most poised to be able to compete so long as Microsoft doesn't screw it up......(waits for crickets chirping)
I always see comparisons between the launch of windows 7 and 8 but what never seems to be considered is the fact that when 7 launched there was a clamour for a new os due to how bad vista was perceived/received depending on viewpoint. With the launch of Win 8 there has not been that same sense of urgency because 7 is good for most people running a desk top environment.
Personally I enjoy 8 more than 7 but that's just this readers opinion.
Or this could be the beginning of a down swing for AAPL, lower iPhone sales won't make investors happy, iPhone 5S which I am sure we will see at some point this year won't be anything revolutionary, more competition from the likes of Nokia, RIM, Samsung, HTC won't help matters and it appears that the iPhone is not all that popular in most of the "developing world" nor in China probably a lot down to cost.
Perhaps people should wait for it to go further down to buy as this could be the top of the mountain for Apple that we have reached.
LOL @ The Alpha Klutz your comments make zero sense. So MS colluded to make their operating system fast with intel right........... they ddon't want to produce the fastest product they can anyway right?? (also you did acknowledge that it is fast!!)
Also do you have any kind of statistics that back up the fact that windows xp is "the fastest" or is that just some more drivel coming out of your mouth I can't quite decide but erring on the side of you have no clue WTF you are talking about.
For gaming I am pretty sure Win8 was tested and came out on top of even Win 7. For regular use you don't have to stick with the Metro Interface, go to the desktop and use it or on a dual screen setup its even better, you can have your metro apps on one screen and your legacy ish on the other.
Final Note: Windows 8 has been released to the public for all of about 3-4 months at this point but yet we should accept your view now that it has failed??
Keep Trolling Buddy your obviously a pro at that at least.
Agree, the people who hate on win 8 either have not used it at all, arent smart enough to learn it or cant be bothered. The trolls just say it sucks, we all know who they are e.g. @Eadon and The Reg writers obviously do not complete much partial journalism unless it comes to something ending in *ix or *ux or *droid
I used to love this site but it appears to be seeing a take over from a bunch of hacks who just want to act on personal agendas half the time.
Not sure but definitely searching for an alternative to ElReg in the near future.
"but the low-cost Android experience isn't that great"
Theres an understatement, everyone I know with a mid range android phone cannot stand the experience.
Nokia definitely appears to be moving in the right direction, just wish I had purchased some shares back in Q3 2012 when they were running at about US $1.70 a share, could have doubled my money in less than 6 months!!
Your dumb troll comments just keep on coming, somewhere between the open source bs about how windows 8 sucks so badly and the MSFT at least partial bs on how Win 8 is the best thing since sliced bread lies the truth. Now, no matter how you look at it 60 million licenses sold in 3 months since the release date is pretty nice and whether those are installed right now or not the fact is that windows runs on more computers than anything else so....if you were a developer (I am guessing you are not because you seem to be just a troll) and you could get in early on something that is pretty close to surely having a very large audience why would you not do that......
BTW liked the Bootnote, if you actually try Win 8 with an open mind and continue to use it for an extended period of time it really is pretty darn good.
If I was a business owner (I'm not) I would be pissed if someone was writing an unfairly negative review of my company. Now if it was the truth then so be it, but if the customer is distorting the truth and that in turn is causing a loss of revenue I cannot say I blame the builder for going after her/him.
Lying/Bad Mouthing to me should be liablous (spell checker is off) if it is not a truthful statement and people need to realize that what they write online is not always annonymous and simply a comment it can have a real world consequence.
I have zero interest in watching a movie recorded on a camcorder in a theater full of people where you do not even have direct audio half the time and when you do it sounds like somebody shoved the microphone where the sun doesn't shine then connected it to the source......Bluray FTW!!!
I guess the general public does not feel the same way as this as these guys were able to sell their pirate warez to others in order to buy some extra servers etc.....I guess the question I would be asking myself is was it REALLY worth it???....Have fun in jail and keep that soap on a rope held tight boys!!
Hopefully they are not using crapple maps or the good ship might run aground.
Here's how the conversation would have gone if Steve was alive and sailing:
STEVE: Mr Cook, set a course for Seattle harbor, I need to test these rail guns on MSFT HQ.
COOK: aye aye sir, its only a couple of miles up the coast afaik
6 Hours Later......
STEVE: where are we Tim?
COOK: Umm, let me check my iphone maps just to be safe. This iOS 6 is great you know.
10 minutes later....
STEVE: Well, where are we Tim?
COOK: Bollox we've run aground apparently just off the Mexican coast sir.
**A Loud Bang Sounds and Cook's dead body hits the ocean.**
STEVE: You're fired bitch, someone get google on the phone asap!!!
Ohhhh I see, because I am younger than you I need to grow up...... and actually I am old enough to have had milk delivered to the house when I was growing up and to steal a few pints from the neighbors as well!!
Perhaps (as I said to the other person here) you could have saved yourself some time by learning something new and more efficient, perhaps your incapable though....Did the 2 finger typing take long to get those paragraphs out?
Make use of that valuable time old timer!! No need to respond unless you really want to as I know you will be chuffed to read this response :)
Haha, allow me to retort!!!
My point is that many many people (like yourself) simply knock a new product because they do not know how to use it and do not want to learn. Further to my point is that world moves forward, if you want to wallow in your mud thats cool but I have no interest hearing how your better off on XP when by your own admission you would not even choose to try windows Vista, 7 or 8. You should know that actually windows 7 and 8 (and I guess Vista too) are more stable and more efficient than the XP System you are using so perhaps you could have saved yourself some time somewhere along the line by learning one of them.....
Your last comment I won't even bother responding to as it is merely rhetorical.
"Win 8 seems ok for casual non work use, even better than vista and on a par with win 7. It works well with a touch screen if your activites are going to basically be facebook \ hulu \ gmail but it's clunky for actual work, especially without a touch screen"
I sort of agree with you on a par with Win 7 but not sure why you would say its clunky for actual work without a touch screen....Unless you actually need a touch screen working in the desktop environment of Win 8 is either the same or better than using the same computer for windows 7. Unless your in a field where you require a touch screen to test your work I can't think of many reasons why you would need a touch screen for work purposes right now?
