Windows 10 Creators Update general rollout begins with a privacy dialogue

psychonaut

What update?

All my win 7 machines haven't noticed. Win 10 you say? Hmm, no, i'll let the guinea pigs find the bugs thanks...wonder what this update will remove...could be network drivers , file share permissions, security software, other software, print drivers....need some popcorn. Still, the phone will start ringing soon and i'll find out how bad it is

Re: Incriminating Evidence

im not sure you can be "good" at Risk, you'll be sat there on iceland with a huge army defending northeast canada, youve got guys on alaska, maybe kamchatka if youve been clever / not fucked over by isolated tribes in asia, and you own all of south america too, so loads of guys in brazil, low overheads, lots of extra armies every go and somehow, the bastard with a third of your army in great britain will manage to make the dice fuck you over then go rampaging through north america and then you are fucked.

or the guy sat in australia who sits there for the whole game just amassing 2 extra every go, for hours, doing nothing, and then splurges all over asia like some kind of honeymoon-balled dog with 2 dicks

europe - fuck that, too difficult to hold. africa, not worth it. asia - no chance, everyone will hate you immediately.

ahh Risk..

psychonaut

@AC

i get what you are saying, it may seem unfair, but try starting out on your own, you will appreciate all the help you can get.

you clearly dont have any idea of the uncertainty and risk involved in generating not only your own employment, but the employment of others, either directly from hiring people to work for you as you expand or indirectly by using their services. and also, yes, sick, holiday, pensions, child vouchers, medical etc.

it depends what line of business you are in, but when i started i didnt make very much money for several years.

i do believe it is worth something more than working for the man.

little companies can grow into big ones, generating tax revenue and employing many people (mine doesnt, im too scared to do it, and im too much of a control freak, and im comfortable with making a reasonable living). someone has to start these things, and its risky. surely we can have a little bit of a benefit?

Re: bipolar

@anthonyhegedus

yes. fast start is a giant pain in the arse. ive only recently figured out something that has been bugging me for ages. if you shut down a win 10 pc (with, as i now know, fast start enabled), and then bung the disk in a caddy to move data to it from another machine, and then bung the disk back in the machine, it goes ape shit, runs check disk. then the data you moved dissapears, (actually it turns up in lost files) but it reports the available space to be what it would be if the data is actually there. the first few times i tried this with win 10 (i do a lot of this because i run a repair shop, copy data to data server, rebuild , copy data back) i couldnt figure it out, so i started doing it the other way (copy data from win 10 machine to caddy, but i dont like doing this, id prefer to have their data on my data server rather than having to have lots of external drives hanging around).

its fast start that causes this. turn it off and it behaves itself.

im with you on the turn it off front. dont hibernate, sleep, any of that shit. on or off. all the machines i build these days have 850 pro ssd's in them, and as you rightly say, its 15 seconds to windows from cold, so fast start is not useful there. whoda thought restart to turn off, instead of turn off?

Re: Regedit Address Bar

ive got 3 screens, so multiple desktop not really an issue for me. of course now i want 6. once you go black, theres no going back and all

psychonaut

bipolar

just get rid of

1) the tifkam control panel apps. seems to be random as to which one you get

2) the "change default browser" annoyance. change it. get taken to tifkam page. change it. "are you sure, why not try edge"? just change the fucking thing already

3) add user. just add a fucking user. dont hide making a local account, having to seleect "i dont have this persons login details" , then ask me if i want to use a ms account, then finally get to a local account. just have dropdown if you must. and just give me the win 7 style user management page. not some crap about this user, other users, add a family friend, add a dog. alright, i could net user /add etc

4) if i do a search from the start menu, im not interested in internet results, waiting for 2 minutes whilst it tries to find device manager or whatever. (ok, so i know i can use devmgmt.msc instead...)

5) theres ads in explorer? ive not seen this actually, but it wouldnt surprise me.

i wonder what this update will break / uninstall. usually network cards in my experience, and security programs.

incidentally, ive had a 2 jobs this week on lenovo's with win 10 where a firmware update for some uefi component that i cant remember at the moment borks the external monitor output. just roll back the driver for it and it works. maybe this will help someone

seperate processes sounds great, however, it'll probably always be the Windows update service that causes the problem as usual

psychonaut

Re: Regedit Address Bar

wow. a +1 for win 10. never thought id see the day. about fecking time, this would be handy. not handy enough to change from 7 mind you.

im sticking with my note 4. theres nothing else out there even now

Re: Hmmmm

yeah, but you can make a device which is waterproof and has a removable battery. watches for instance. for some value of waterproof, like, dropped in bath / swimming pool / beer / toilet, which frankly, is all its likely to be with a phone. they can, they just dont, the cynic in me says its because then yo have to upgrade every 2 years (or replace battery every 9 months in my case)

psychonaut

Re: Hmmmm

yup, im keeping my note 4 too. just get a new battery....20 quid or so. im on my third now. lasts all day with everything turned on and nigh on constant phonecall use.

i still cant find a replacement for the note 4. there are 3 phablets on gsm arena with removable battery, one of which is the note 4. still, its a decent phone, even if the camera could do much better in low light. plus my tarrif just got miles cheaper as i dont need to pay into a hardware fund.

shame really, i would have bought it if the 8 had a removable battery. maybe next time,...

how did they fuck that up?

"She hired Geek Squad to repair the machine, with only partial success, and ended up having to purchase a new computer."

err - what? last resort, reinstall the OS. no hardware damage was done. how on earth did she have to buy a new machine? what a bunch of muppets

dont get me wrong, i hate windows 10, but it makes me a lot of money - is still not fit for purpose, so i end up repairing as lot of machines (and usually suggest them to buy a win 7 license or reinstall 7 back on if they have "upgraded" to 10 and now have massive issues)

Re: VPN?

if someone downvotes, it usually means that they dont agree with you.

thats fine. downvotes are fine....i dont care.

i was interested in why someone disagreed, thats all.

maybe i should have put it another way. whatever.

psychonaut

el reg will have an update for us soon apparantly

psychonaut

Re: genuine question

no worries.

rdp is great, if you already have it set up or already have a vpn etc.

trying to get doris to do it over the the phone other hand....

psychonaut

Re: genuine question

its very quick and easy for the customer to install. they just run an executable which you can easily send them a link for or tell them over the phone. or if you want unattended access, they have to run a slightly more complicated executable and answer a few questions, but it isnt difficult and takes a few minutes.

they dont need a static ip / dynamic dns name , and they dont have to mess around with port forwards on their router. the average joe will not be able to do this, and would take a looooong time to tell them how to do it over the phone.

if you are a licensed TV business customer, you can make your own custom module preset with security policies (like "only allow my account to connect to this TV client" *(really good to stop random callers from hijacking TV) and you can have all your remote customers on a single searchable list, and simply push a button to connect. it saves me hours , i could not run my business without it (or something similar)

psychonaut

seems the entire planet except your self still think that talk talk are blocking TV. would love to see some evidence, reallym, geniunely would love to see it. not only just to prove you wrong but to make the extra headache that the TV block will cause me go away.

note to self: if you ever find yourself pretending to be an IT guy to boost your morale, book yourself a one way to ticket to dignitas, its the end of the line for your brain.

guys...i was interested as to why....i figured id get downvoted simply for mentioning downvotes. ive got more pressing issues than to worry about it....

psychonaut

Re: VPN?

oh, i dont give a shit about the downvotes, its all gravy, i was interested as to the why though

psychonaut

Wow what a cock you are. you don't think I know which of the hundreds of customers I have on TV are on talk talk do you? It's not something I record. None of my business customers are. I'm going to start randomly phoning up doris and asking if I can connect? I might be pretending I'm in IT?? Why would I bother?

I was after some help from a fellow tech...seems like I've found some kind of idiot.
