Chipmaker FTDI bricking counterfeit kit

Moeluk

One group of people are about to have a pretty big problem...

One group of people without the technical expertise (in computing anyway), are going to have a massive shock...people with USB to OBDII cables that they bought on ebay, and use to interrogate and change their cars ECU's, AKA pretty much every independent garage in the country ever..

This is going to come as a bit of a shock to them, and they won't be very happy, when they discover they can't reset warning lights etc....

They won't sue, they'll get a geek to sort it all out, but seriously...wtf? That's Shady FTDI...tres shady!

New iGasm: Apple to unveil not one but TWO iPhone 6 models on 9 Sept

Re: Still with the rumors

I think you'll find bloomberg just re-reported it, it was actually the AllThingsD team that reported it initially, and seeing as that group contains, much loved Walt Mossberg, who never publishes bullshit when it comes to Apple, i'd consider it a fairly reliable source.

Re: Splitting is the new 'thing', I fear

Thank God, it's not just me that's been thinking that....all I know is that in the early 90's we were all told about the advantages of taking one bottle into the shower instead of two...

and yet 20 years later, bookface are taking us in the other direction. I for one have abandoned the bookface app on the iPad and use Fera, I shall do the same on the iPhone if it stops me doing the same there.

Facebook splats in-app chat, whacks brats into crack yakety-yak app

Moeluk

ummm wait what?

Well that seems a good idea...take an app where people can do two things relatively ok and then make them download another app, for the sole purpose of removing them from the place where you generate your advertising revenue....

Hmmm.......I might be being stupid, but this just seems another reason to stop using facebook...i rarely use it for anything other than to chat to maybe 2 or 3 friends...thats it, it's all just baby bullshit and other things.

Windows hits the skids, Mac OS X on the rise

Moeluk

Re: "free" OSX - what are we smoking today?

Wow, Ross..you need to chill out a bit before you have some sort of aneurism... however if it helps -

OS X is free, if you either bought a mac at any point in the last 4 years, or spent a whole £20 to update to snow leopard at any point in the last 4 years, then it is free, and will continue to be free in the future.

For a mac older than 4 years, i would say that I'd hardly begrudge £20 for an OS upgrade, when you look at the cost of either Win 7 or Win 8 (£154 and £90 respectively..for non oem home prem/standard versions)

Anyway, you go take a little lie down now before your blood pressure starts to affect seismometers in your local vicinity.

Pop quiz hotshot....I'm in my living room with one tv, one 6.1 surround system,a ps4 and a copy of FIFA

I want to listen to my music from my pc upstairs, WHILST playing FIFA....

What do I do? Supposing I don't want to listen to Geoff Shreeves, Martin Tyler and Alan smith? Hmm....

Is that a really outlandish request? (Feel free to replace fifa with pretty much any game) mind you I know you playstation users have never had that option due to the feeble amount of memory handed over with your console...where as xbox owners have had that ability since the launch of the original xbox...but honestly, not playing mp3s is literally taking the Piss

It's the '90s all over again: Apple repeats mistakes as low-cost tablets pile up

Moeluk

No you see thats the point, they aren't taking them for idiots...they are pricing according to demand.

I would guess that well over 80% of the market could not give a rats arse about how much storage the tablet has. I don't use the entirety of a 16gb iPad...if you need 64gb, then thats your prerogative, but with streaming from iTunes with homesharing, and the ability to hold enough music and movies for 2 flights and a week on a sun lounger with headphones on...I really don't see the issue.

As for the auntie not wanting to buy him something thats cheaper, well thats her stipulation...she knows her iPad works, and she also knows that Nick very rarely buys anything that 'just works' it's fiddle with this, fiddle with that...

0
1
Moeluk

What a load of bluster from Canalys....when world and dog has stopped buying iPads, and next year Tim Cook announces that they've only sold 171million iPads, i might believe him.

But right now, if people want a tablet that they know that works, they buy Apple. Even my stubborn mate who refuses to buy the best, and always goes for the underdog (leading him to buy a Samsung S3) has been offered one for christmas by his auntie...but her stipulation is "it has to be an iPad" and even he is thinking of taking the offer.

So basically, non story...

Here comes Windows 8.1! Microsoft grits teeth, pushes upgrade to world

It shouldn't take that long to load an app, when the image viewer in Win 7 was also damn near instant though...

4

Moeluk

The one thing I want to know is how metro apps can be so incredulously slow and shit at the same time.

For instance I'm running win 8 in a Vm on my MacBook. I have a JPEG of approximately 500k...double click it in OS X and preview loads instantly.....

Double click it in win 8 I get the metro image splash screen and then the dots of despair move across the screen for anywhere between 5 and 10 seconds...before I get to see the pic. WTF?

How can it take that long to load a picture?

Sorry to back everyone else up here....but yeah, the cars they use to produce the spec figures for cars are whats known as 'blueprinted', which means not only are they all leaned out on the test, but the engine in that car is designed exactly to spec, and all tolerances are much finer than they are in the production car.

System Restore? A leap forwards or backwards?

Now i've performed a system restore, to push the registry back on windows 7 many times, when something iffy has gone wrong..and it's taken at maximum about 15-20 minutes...

Ha! and he wonders why we all have Macbooks at home!

Re: Baffled

Remind me again, when was the last time you bought any product, other than Windows 8, that you had to fix 3 things on?

Did you have to resolder the remote control for your TV set when you took it out of the box?

Screw on the handles to the last set of saucepans you purchased?

Did I have to change anything to get OS X to work as expected when I installed it last time...

No....so how can you say that the shipping product is fine?

Facepalm

Re: @ MattEvanC3 Bunch of nancies

Seriously do you realise what you sound like.....

I'm 3 weeks in to actually giving Windows 8, a proper workout to test suitability moving forward. (And to shut up our guy in charge of tech)

Everything is taking longer...than it ever did in Win 7...and it's all very good with people saying "oh you only have to reset all the default file associations" DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MANY FILE TYPES there are that you use without even REALISING IT....

If i've got to set them up on every single persons machine across the business it will drive me nuts. All for no reason.

I've got one person thats the official company test user and is working out in the field with it every day, after a little over a month, she's just about hitting the 'wanting to dropkick her laptop out of the window stage', I thought i'd fixed her wifi issues...but it turns out that you have to change your power management settings to prevent it from disconnecting the wifi every 30 minutes! I mean who in the name of christ thought that would be a GOOD IDEA....

If people send a link from sharepoint, it now has to fire up IE before asking you what you want to do with it, open it or download it (not an issue with win 7...Word just fires up straights away and loads it up)

It's just a complete mess, and I really don't want to deploy it...to the point that i will probably circumvent the tech directors orders and buy Win 7 machines, instead of Win 8 for as long as i possibly can..even if it risks getting me fired.

The sooner this whole embarassment disappears the better!

Re: It can't get any worse...

Tim, I suspect it's the exact same piece of software, just on general release...

I genuinely don't get how something can be so flawed as an experience...my users want to use the computer like they always have, browsing like they used to browse the network share.

They don't want to be going into web interfaces to get at a file they want to print...it's just absolutely stupid.. we have no use for any of sharepoints other functionaility...it's there to store documents..thats all we want it to do! It's just absolutely crazy.

A completely typical Sharepoint Experience.

Isn't there some sort of Trading Standards Act, that would allow me to claim the last 18 months O365 fees back for our company...because i'm sorry but a large percentage of this MS software does NOT do what it says on the tin....

Hell just yesterday I discovered a shit storm had been unleashed because the box in Dynamics labelled 'Search inactive contacts', does not search inactive contacts...it searches active contacts...

Surface Pro to hit Blighty priced 25% up on top-o-the-range iPad

Moeluk

Re: Yeah, but ...

I agree with you I'm afraid, we've just issued iPad's to our guys that go out and sell...

Reason: It'll work, and it does what we need it to do on the road, which is e-mail, Dynamics, A Powerpoint repository we can control remotely, Office web Apps...it's pretty much the tool for the job..and everyone loves the iPad, so there is no need to retrain them with the finickety bits of Win 8...also I dont' have to continually battle with sharepoint.

To those of you....

...that say, yes but it can run CAD, Photoshop, Avid...well yes it can, minor issue however

It only has a poxy 11inch screen....so actually it's next to useless, anyway! Oh and those apps aren't suited to touch either.

Of course if you carry an 27" monitor around with you all the time it's fine, but then that kind of defeats the point...so here's the real question...

Why would you spend £899 on something when you get spend half that get a better specced machine that doesn't throttle down the CPU after 30 minutes running at full whack for half that price?

Microsoft: All RIGHT, you can have your Start button back

Moeluk

At least Lenovo are listening

Well...last two pc's i bought for the company were Lenovo's with Windows 8 on them...we have a new starter next week..and thank god ebuyer have got the previous machine with Win 7 back in stock again! I guess it's a good thing that MS have slightly relented...although we aren't getting the start menu back...just the ability to boot to desktop.

I do find it totally odd, that in my entire 15 years of using PC's, this is the first time ever I've wanted to go backwards, rather than forwards..on any sort of machine, be it Mac or PC, and if thats the case then MS have failed, and failed to provide a reason to go to them anymore.

Hmmmm

Bleeding is something of an overstatement

Any new market that's created relys on early adopters spending a lot of cash for the best thing available...

Then when cheaper alternatives arrive and the market expands then the poorer people buy the cheaper alternatives....as for market cap, well that's always inevitable it's peaks and troughs..

As for WWDC 2013? I for one can't wait to see what Ive has done with ios...and it would be awesome to see 'one more thing' to make a return
