Re: It can't get any worse...
Tim, I suspect it's the exact same piece of software, just on general release...
I genuinely don't get how something can be so flawed as an experience...my users want to use the computer like they always have, browsing like they used to browse the network share.
They don't want to be going into web interfaces to get at a file they want to print...it's just absolutely stupid.. we have no use for any of sharepoints other functionaility...it's there to store documents..thats all we want it to do! It's just absolutely crazy.
Re: Yaaaayyyyyyyyy
A completely typical Sharepoint Experience.
Isn't there some sort of Trading Standards Act, that would allow me to claim the last 18 months O365 fees back for our company...because i'm sorry but a large percentage of this MS software does NOT do what it says on the tin....
Hell just yesterday I discovered a shit storm had been unleashed because the box in Dynamics labelled 'Search inactive contacts', does not search inactive contacts...it searches active contacts...
Re: Yaaaayyyyyyyyy
Oh wait no...it's still utterly shit...
"we cannot sync this library because it is too large"
Well thanks microsoft, thanks a fucking bunch.
Yaaaayyyyyyyyy
Downloading it now...
Hopefully it's not just another rehash of Groove/Workspace because that was shit...
All I want for our employees, is something that is as simple to use as dropbox, and that doesn't keep forgetting what sharepoint sites you have access to.
Here's hoping!!!
Re: Yeah, but ...
I agree with you I'm afraid, we've just issued iPad's to our guys that go out and sell...
Reason: It'll work, and it does what we need it to do on the road, which is e-mail, Dynamics, A Powerpoint repository we can control remotely, Office web Apps...it's pretty much the tool for the job..and everyone loves the iPad, so there is no need to retrain them with the finickety bits of Win 8...also I dont' have to continually battle with sharepoint.
To those of you....
...that say, yes but it can run CAD, Photoshop, Avid...well yes it can, minor issue however
It only has a poxy 11inch screen....so actually it's next to useless, anyway! Oh and those apps aren't suited to touch either.
Of course if you carry an 27" monitor around with you all the time it's fine, but then that kind of defeats the point...so here's the real question...
Why would you spend £899 on something when you get spend half that get a better specced machine that doesn't throttle down the CPU after 30 minutes running at full whack for half that price?
At least Lenovo are listening
Well...last two pc's i bought for the company were Lenovo's with Windows 8 on them...we have a new starter next week..and thank god ebuyer have got the previous machine with Win 7 back in stock again! I guess it's a good thing that MS have slightly relented...although we aren't getting the start menu back...just the ability to boot to desktop.
I do find it totally odd, that in my entire 15 years of using PC's, this is the first time ever I've wanted to go backwards, rather than forwards..on any sort of machine, be it Mac or PC, and if thats the case then MS have failed, and failed to provide a reason to go to them anymore.
I'm now really confused...
Reg...have you employed Eadon, and got him to start writing articles about Apple? If we could return to bitching about Windows 8 and Surface that would be awesome....right now it feels like the pimply nerd is hurling abuse, based on really..the slimmest of arguments.
Re: *yawn*
You havent been round very long have you?
I remember the days when you could go for weeks if not months, without mac rumour sites posting new stories...because secrecy was so high...the whole point is that apple is truly sizzling when we hear nothing!
Hmmmm
Bleeding is something of an overstatement
Any new market that's created relys on early adopters spending a lot of cash for the best thing available...
Then when cheaper alternatives arrive and the market expands then the poorer people buy the cheaper alternatives....as for market cap, well that's always inevitable it's peaks and troughs..
As for WWDC 2013? I for one can't wait to see what Ive has done with ios...and it would be awesome to see 'one more thing' to make a return
Just for finding a working GX4000 the guy deserves some sort of medal!
Almost certainly... Ill be the first to admit im no life long sysadmin But isn't the whole point of 365 to remove the need for people that have been using powers hell since they were in the womb?
But well done for taking the superior smug attitude
This..I became general network and IT overseer in our SME, When we switched to 365, since they started rolling out 2013, mashed it with dynamics and futzed hotmail into outlook, and sharepoint into skydrive
My workload has gone into orbit. Literally I'm thinking about quitting and doing something else. It's painful. sharepoint and WebDAV are so flakey it's stupid, I don't get group emails when the boss sends them, outlook problems are blamed on dynamics and vice versa, I've had support requests closed without permission THREE TIMES. Office 2013 hasn't deployed yet and I genuinely hope it never does...and they've just opened up the support hotline to Wipro in India... having pro anywhere in their name is quite frankly offensive and if they were located in Britain they could quite easily be done under the trades descriptions act.
I do see its appeal to the bean counters don't get me wrong...but it's all so bloody infuriating, this is where ms have to go but they are cheaping out on the cost to do it properly and it's just maddening
Sorry to sound like Eadon.
365 FAIL
Re: well hold on there pardner...
we've said it once, we'll say it a million times...
How many 'average' users do you know, that know start menu keyboard shortcuts...
hell i'm a techy, and wasn't really aware of them until the consumer preview of Win 8...BECAUSE I'VE NEVER EVER EVER NEEDED THEM
If you have to revert back to using the keyboard...how is that advancement?
Re: http://prezi.com
I dont think it is purely cloud because the theatre had no inter web connection...
Might i interject?
Keeping things in perspective, firstly why downvote Eadon? What does it achieve?
Secondly, ok you can't replace server side solutions with iOS or Android, but the sentiment of the statement still stands for channel and resellers by the looks of things. It strikes me that Eadon is partially right...either MS are genuinely trying to sabotage themselves, or they're trying to do an Apple...and go directly to the consumer, be that in the enterprise or personal space.
It only needs someone to come along with a viable cheaper alternative, and the majority of the channel will be happy to push the software that does the job and gives them a bigger margin....than selling MS software. This will hurt MS as they start to lose their grip in the 'post-pc world' (sorry i'll brb just got to go and be sick in a bucket after using such a clichéd marketing phrase)
I mean over the last 18 months, i've dealt with several people from BT to other tech supplier, and every single one has asked 'do you have office 365', why yes we do why? 'Well we could probably do it for you cheaper than what you're paying right now' With pitches like that, it seems that all the resellers are scrabbling for any sort of piece of the pie.
Yes i'm aware that 'no-one ever got fired for buying Microsoft', but you know what...the human race would never advance if it didn't take risks....and there are tools out there right now, that blow the absolute arse out of what MS can provide right now. A perfect example of this is Prezi... http://prezi.com , i'd never heard of it before yesterday...but my god it makes stupidly powerful presentations, extremely easily. As a result, literally overnight our company is abandoning powerpoint for this stuff, to create truly slick presentations for clients. (btw i'm not a prezi shill, it clearly still has a few issues, like crashing if you load two presentations simultaneously)
But my point stands, someone only needs to come around and do what MS currently do better, faster, cheaper and without being such utter bastards to the people that keep them alive, and thats it, it's the beginning of the end.
Remember, if you shit on people on the way up, then they're going to take a fairly hefty dump on you on the way back down
Oh Joy.....
Still it's not appeared in my 365 sys admin web interface yet, it's still pissing out 2010 pro plus.
Btw yes, total rip off, i wish we'd just bought office 2010 outright...it would be so much cheaper...
You sure? It's the same length.....
/why yes my mum was prescribed thalydomide when she was pregnant, why do you ask?
Not exactly surprising...when will they realise that holding your arm up to a computer is a pain in the arse!
When will MS get the message that it's failed? Also whens this epic new 'relaunch' of Win 8 coming?
Yup, the bit about the salary of the manager not being related to their worth is 100% true
"when Windows Phone can't even sync with Microsoft Outlook without going through a damn cloud service."
This! 100% this....some of our guys have switched to windows phones, and I've had to tell them I can't get their numbers off their iPhone and onto the Lumias. Simply because there is no way to put windows address book contacts on there. Now I know someone will say you just need the outlook to hotmail connector or just use exchange..., but I can't do that either due to Dynamics crm, so basically as is usually the case, ms technology stops other ms technology from working.....
I am about 9 days away from a mental breakdown I spend so long on the phone to Microsoft these days, even their O365 hold music has become turgid and depressing
Re: @MMEIER Forget All the Noise and Interference this is About MS Mobile - Isn't It?
Not to be sarcastic, but this very afternoon I suitably balanced and gripped my MacBook Pro in one arm and typed and used the trackpad as I walked over the courtyard to the studio....
And I am quite possibly the most ill co ordinated stumbling buffoon you are ever likely to meet.
Re: This is a standard tactic...
Wow....so much hate, so little time.
1) Correct, If i have to retrain 30 people just so Microsoft can sell a few shitty phones and tablets, i'd consider it not proper/an abuse of power.
2) Erm..no, i just said Secureboot prevents you easily installing another OS
Guesses
1) Does running the infrastructure for an SME count as the real world?
2) I can't really comment, I know who he is..but I don't read his posts as they are pretty much shouty rubbish
3) I understand why people use windows, I wouldn't recommend linux to anyone outside the geek community (hell i woudn't even recommend it to myself..i've tried linux many times..and the hoops are just annoying after a while) However I don't understand why people voluntarily subject themselves to the shittyness and pain of Windows, when you could spend a bit more and have a basically zero maintenance machine called a Mac.
But carry on the character assassination if you want. It's your time you're wasting, not mine.
Re: This is a standard tactic...
....except Secure Boot won't let you...yes you can get around it with a linux pre-loader, but thats just the point...you shouldn't have to 'work around' stuff, to get stuff done.
"Can have" should not imply, you require a level of technical knowledge, capable to make a hackintosh, to make it happen.
Re: No desirable 128GB versions and too many 64GB ones
I'm happy to be corrected, but that doesn't really help...because as far as I'm aware, if you want the Surface Pro, to actually store Apps and things on those SD cards, you have to go into regedit and change the default path for the system to save stuff to.
That sounds like something every single person is going to be able to do right out of the box.....
Re: This is a standard tactic...
"At least the Surface Pro can have a proper OS installed on it."
Really cos I heard it was shipping with Windows 8 installed on it, Windows 8 is not a proper OS, hell it's not even a semi-coherant mess of an OS.
I have a question... As its running Windows 8, which under all that finery is STILL using a system registry, it's presumably going to suffer the same system slow downs that all versions of windows have Ben affected with since the dawn of time (well win95 anyway)
What happens when the system becomes so cripplingly slow that you have to nuke and pave? Will it reinstall all your apps or is it going to be a PITA?
also if you genuinely think it's going to change the global routes..it's not, it's just going to save the airlines bills on aviation fuel.
Re: Not for flight
Not to be rude..but if you read the *actual* news...it states
"The Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) issued the order after a 787 operated by Japan’s All Nippon Airways (ANA) made an emergency landing outside Tokyo on Wednesday. The plane landed early after cockpit controls warned of battery error and indicated smoke."
So yeah, the battery did exactly what you said it couldn't do..and malfunctioned IN FLIGHT.
Re: @Moeluk
no i'm just pointing out your belming for the sake of belming...
it's basically the technological equivalent of shaking your head and saying 'tuh, making a cup of tea is SUCH A NIGHTMARE, you have to fill the kettle up...then turn it on....and then POUR THE WATER...what were they thinking?
WHAT??!?
They're turning off Activesync? Google...WHY......I couldn't care about the other stuff, but Activesync has made my life so much easier, so many times with guys phones at work..don't make me go back to imap.
Re: Consider me baffled
You clearly woke up on the wrong side of the bed then... (and george michaels bed by the sound of it..)
What is so difficult about
1) Holding on to the button at the top of the ipad?
2) Running through an extremely simple hold your hand setup process, that does everything from picking the right language, to making sure all your data is backed up to iCloud?
3) Using the iPad
Your genuinely making a mountain out of a molehill, and you have to do exactly the same thing for ANY tablet more or less....
but you carry on with your rage....it won't shave precious hours off your life at all...
Re: Consider me baffled
What the...why would you get your mum an iPad if she didn't have the Internet?
This can only be trolling!
Re: If it's any consolation
We're on Utility Warehouse (using Talktalk's service) and I had the exact same issue. However setting the MTU to 1500 instead of the 1432 it's set on as default. Try fiddling around with it and see what happens.
Re: learn how to use a computer
Sadly yes, we hit 'peak intelligence' somewhere around the mid 90's, it's all downhill from here...as more and more generations know how to do less and less, and the elder generations spoonfeed them more and more and more.
Does anyone get the feeling that Windows 8 and Surface RT is just turning into one huge Clusterf*ck for Microsoft?
Office is 'free' unless you want to use it!
I'm sorry but the more and more I look at this thing, the more and more it seems destined to fail. At first i thought hmm, it *could* rival the iPad, and more worryingly it could have been the defacto device of choice for my company.
Thank GOD they've dropped the ball, as per usual. Not significantly cheaper than the iPad, £100 for a keyboard, untried and tested ecosystem which will likely bomb...and then, the big feature they are touting 'GET OFFICE FREE' has a lovely little disclaimer at the bottom...
"Office Home & Student 2013 RT Preview and the final version are not for use in commercial, nonprofit, or revenue generating activities. Commercial license options available (sold separately). "
So 'Office is free, unless you want to..i dunno, ACTUALLY do some work on it
Re: Who wants to come to my Windows 8 launch party?
Oh GOD...my MIND BLEACH had just scrubbed that from inside my head. Thanks....i'll be back after i've been to therapy...AGAIN
/Happy mac user
Re: autocrop?
Umm..that would be a mighty fine idea...except thats not this phone, or this camera....the 41 megapixel pureview camera is the Nokia 808 which is a Symbian phone.
The Lumia 920 has a thoroughly standard 8.9 megapixel camera, and can you imagine the hash that Win Pho 8 would make of that.
No they can't because if they did that Nokia might not fail, and flop won't get a large bonus from Ballmer for serving a phone manufacture to them for nothing on a plate...
Been playing with 8 this morning
Wow..just wow...
I got an e-mail this morning telling me to get all the win 7 licence keys together, so we're ready to move to win 8. So I downloaded the consumer release preview... Oh my GOD what an absolute clusterf**k in a box. I see what it's trying to do...but it's just so bad at it...
It all started after it took a full 20 minutes to startup after 'installation' (in a VM machine on an i7 giving it a meaty 4gb of Ram) Then it just got worse, I couldn't work out how the hell you quit. So I googled that, then i was using ie 10 and it arbitrarily stopped a download when i hit the progress bar.
I then went back into ie. and told it to use the desktop, which it promptly did...but then locked me into the desktop with absolutely no way to get out or escape from it, without resetting the VM.
Installed office 2010, littering 20 or so tiles on the 'metro interface' most of which are useless...and then about 90 minutes ago, i had to turn the vm off, because it point blank refused to bring up the side bar with the Shutdown. I'm learning it because i'm going to support it..and more worryingly our guy in charge of tech wants to shove surface pro at everyone.
Personally what i'm seeing is another closed alley by MS. We're going to buy a load of surface pc's at approx £600 each, and then MS are going to call the whole thing a massive failure and retreat...
