Internet Explorer drops below 60% market share

OffBeatMammal

data collection doesn't matter...

to paraphrase Eric Schmidt, their oh so squeaky clean leader (ha!)... if you don't want Google to know what you're doing on the internet then just don't use the internet :)

Microsoft defends death of free video in IE 9

OffBeatMammal

it's not just the encoding

remember most of the studios / commercial content producers actually need to get paid so they can produce the content so they are going to want DRM to protect their rights.

I don't see Ogg Theora innovating in that space, nor do I see it providing more modern delivery solutions like adaptive streaming (fragmented MPEG4 etc) to provide optimal bitrate delivery for given bandwidth/playback conditions.

If Ogg Theora was a viable competitor to H.264 then I could understand the concern about the lack of support but today a lot of companies have invested time and money in making H.264 a well rounded solution

Google waves goodbye to Docs offline function

OffBeatMammal

wow. the ad server discovers it's hard to run a real business

I just feel sorry for business that believed the ads sold by the ad serving company and switched from something reliable, robust and enterprise capable, like, oh Notes or Exchange, and trusted their communications and documents to this.

Remember a while ago a company (now part of Oracle) claimed "The Network is the Computer" but everyone laughed because the network sometimes is offline. Looks like Google didn't dig into their cache and learn from history.

The Cloud is a nice place but only if I have a local cache to work on when I can't see the sky

Microsoft's FUD goes mobile

Is this about Android, or Sense on top of Android?

the article doesn't specifically mention Android as being where the patent lies. Remember HTC create theor own software - Sense for the UI (on both WinMo and Android powered phones) as well as other add-ons

rather than assume this is MS attacking Android perhaps this is about features/funtionality in Sense (Exchange Sync for instance)

both Navizon and Skyhook do this already, and commercialize the database purely for geolookup

Microsoft stealth launches 'historic' programming language

names

I kinda agree... C++, C# and the like are a pain to say and use in a sentence.

funnily though in the example only Ada was a real name (and that was just in historical deference) - the others were acroymns (COmmon Business Oriented Language, Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code, FORmula TRANslation etc)

frankly though it's all been downhill since VB4

don't confuses a crisis with a plan

this is an unplanned event... if we were to methodically cut back on air travel over a period of time it would permit alternatives (video conferencing, rail, airships even) to develop as patterns adapt.

People would not be trapped, alternatives would exist and the system would not be as vulnerable as it is today

Offline Google Docs disappear on May 3

OffBeatMammal

maybe Going Google wasn't a good idea

so, after running ad campaigns encouraging users to "go google" to avoid service interruptions, lost documents etc.... Google have a series of service interruptions and then start degrading or removing functionality.

I don't know about you but I don't live in a world of always-on, high speed internet so I like to have a local copy of a doc I can work with on my notebook.

Imagine. There you are at 45,000 feet (or on a train in a tunnel, or an old school cafe with no wifi). You want to check where your next meeting is, or reply to that urgent email or finish a presentation.

Option 1/ You fire up Microsoft Office, use Outlook to check your calendar, compose a witty and well worded response to the email and file it in the outbox to send as soon as you have connectivity and put the final polish on the presentation you're giving in an hour

Option 2/ You stare at the "connecting" screen for a minute, realise that you're screwed and play patience until you can get a connection to the borg again

For all that Google likes to pretend it's the new Sun (all but claiming "The Network is the Computer" I think we're a way off that reality

NFC? It might work says Department for Transport

OffBeatMammal

NFC == Near Field Communications

think Bluetooth but way lower power (and way lower range)

the magic which lets your card key unlock a door just by swiping it past the detector

Funnily enough there are countries in the world where NFC enabled phones are a key part of everyday life, don't require huge amounts of user training etc... but the growth in the UK will be stiffled because users will resent another Big Brother tracking technology, no-one will agree common standards (so you'll probably need several phones... one for busses, one for mainline trains, one for the tube and possibly one if you plan to visit Manchester)

Microsoft's web privacy push: 'We're the anti-Google'

Hotmail is, as they say, held to a much higher standard though if you want more certainty check out ISPs like Apps4Rent.com who offer hosted Exchange ... it'll cost you a bit but no adverts and proper enterprise level capabilities (we actually use it for our family to share calendars, contacts etc)

Nokia and co, for whatever reason, have totally failed to make a dent in the market here

Apple shrugs to iPad Wi-Fi problems

OffBeatMammal

not just iPads and iPhones...

my Mac Book Pro has similar issues. When it works... it's rock solid but sometimes getting it to try and reconnect in Starbucks to their WiFi (either in OSX or Bootcamp'd into Win7) requires toggling wifi on and off.... and it sometimes drops what seemed to be a perfectly good connection

something like Rohos would solve a lot of this.

for the really paranoid...

- use Rohos for your login, and store all your data in TrueCrypt (or the Rohos solution)

- have a seperate (maybe even non-passworded) account in plain view

- if someone logs onto the apparent default account have the webcam take a snapshot and email it to your cell

Opera alerts EU to hidden Windows browser-ballot

OffBeatMammal

"Find more providers"

there's a clearly labelled choice "Find more providers" in the drop down with the already installed search engines.

that takes you to a site which I've yet to have fail for me, but YMMV.

Aly page/site that hosts it's own search provider can also prompt to change the browser ("Find on this page" can also check)

Opera, Safari, Chrome and Firefox are all harder to change search defaults than IE

OffBeatMammal

you don't have to use Windows either

IE isn't something you purchase. it's free and made available as part of Windows. There's no download or effort you have to make to get it.

If you decide you want something different then there's no loss in installing something else, just choices

The economics of UC

OffBeatMammal

don't forget the user interface

sadly most corporate UC solutions fail to offer the same user experience or capabilities of typical consumer products... so are not especially compelling for non-deskbound workers anyway.

Skype for instance offers a pure VoIP client that (used to) run on a wide range of cellphones. It offers video calling and Outlook integration

Digsby supports cross platform/service IM and Video

Google Voice, Ribbit or Line2 offer proper VoIP on mobile, call forwarding, hunt groups, automated (though sometimes laughable) speech to text message taking

Apple - with the iPhone - proved very clearly that an Enterprise solution today needs to take a long hard look at the user experience before simply mandating technology that looks good on paper otherwise you'll end up with work-arounds and departmental deviations that will just cause trouble down the line.

In some cases that means Skype or similar is a better fit than an Enterprise UC product ... so those vendors need to lift their game and quickly if they want to justify their price point

ZigBee searches for a new home

OffBeatMammal

high end, not consumer

the problem is that it's only in high end kit at the moment.

until IR controlled TVs and STBs become a thing of the past it won't gain enough traction for people to give a damn about it for most homes.

I'm not likely to re-fit my wiring or heating controls every 3 years, but a new TV... maybe. and if the TV is the way to get ZigBee into the home - especially with truely intelligent two-way universal remotes - then the alliance should be bringing a bit more effort to bear there.

when it does come time to upgrade my lighting, heating etc I'm more likely to go with either a solution that has a flexible remote control, is cost effective or integrates with whatever smart-meter technology my power supplier is promoting

Video giant embraces Flash-phobic iPad with HTML 5

OffBeatMammal

live video? content protection?

what options are there today for live video streaming using Ogg Theora? For raw H.264, Flash, Windows Media (Silverlight) there are a number of hardware and software solutions

for on-demand video while a lot of content is youTube there's services like iPlayer or Netflix that require content protection - geoblocking, player authentication etc. Again, Flash, Silverlight offer this but with raw H.264 and Ogg there seems to be a lack of answers.

HTML5 <video> is a great starting block - once the standards align - but people still need to make money. By making protected content much harder the only people who make money are Google by selling ads next to your content and maybe giving you a small cut ... what's that going to do for content creation ecosystem especially with the investment required for live events?

Carphone Warehouse splits with self

OffBeatMammal

somewhere in between

here in the US they are somewhere in between, though there is a difference between those who actually do know what they're doing vs those who read the manuals... and the sections of the store differ...

In the PC/Gaming/Cellphone area they PFY normally has one, has experierience and has an opinion (not always right, but if you can get two to agree you're on a winner) ... though in the white goods or TVs section look for someone who's at least old enough to do their own laundry.

I've had amazing, knowledgable, money saving experiences at Best Buy... but I've also had the worst of the Walmart shelf stacker level assistance. I still prefer to go to the local, independant outlets for anything complicated...

Microsoft tickles Bing with feather duster

OffBeatMammal

I use Bing to google the web

I've been using Bing as my default choice when I want to google, sorry, search the intertubes for something.

On the whole I find it to be much less spammy than the monolithic upstart - more of the results I get are for real content not rubbish re-post and serve some ads sites.

annoyingly there seem to be a bunch of hard to discover options in queries to make Bing even better but MS are not very good at making them visible

wow - BT is stone age

gosh. while I'm not a huge fan of many things here in America the options around the phone systems are a lot better.

I can do things like block (with a message) any number withheld caller, and selectively route callers based on caller id and time of day to voicemail or another number

For instance at home we have

- all withheld numbers blocked

- any call between 10pm and 7am routed to voicemail

- override for the wife, daughter and our parents to get through any time

BT ordered to share telegraph poles for fast broadband

OffBeatMammal

Infrastructure as non-profit

totally agree. for the basic infrastructure - be it fibre to the home, cellphone base stations, gas pipes or electricity cables the vast majority should be owned and operated by a non-profit and the commercial entities have no way to get planning permission or access rights to bypass it.

open books, regular audits and a remit to drive standards and adopt new technologies as negotiated by "their" customers (ie the Telcos in this case) to provide an open, level playing field that doesn't see one company eg BT) penalsed for actually making the investment and others then leeching off it.

Goes against my libertarian views but sometimes things are important enough to want/need a true nationalistic and long term viewpoint

but I'm bored of it always being held up as a shining example of perfection.

it's got a bunch of inconsistancies and missed opportunities to make good use of keyboard accelerators (or worse has innapropriate defaults).

I use both (and Ubuntu) on a daily basis and have frustrations no matter which OS I am running.

SpinVox consumer service croaks

OffBeatMammal

shame really.

I liked SpinVox and found a lot of their implementation better than Google Voice.

Sure, they may have been cheating a little on transcriptions and having humans do it but for formatting and delivery of text notifications of voicemails was far superiour to the Mountain View efforts.

Oh well. Google continues to grow at the expense of quality... but at least it's free (as long as you don't mind them knowing even more about you)

Microsoft sends flowers to IE6 funeral

OffBeatMammal

um, you're blaming MS for not upgrading your computer?

IE6 is over a decade old. Microsoft have released two operating systems and two versions of the browser since then.

Just because some IT Departments have not got around to upgrading their SOE or some vendors still tie their apps to an outdataed IE model really can't be Microsoft's fault.

Test and upgrade to IE8 and deploy it site wide. Sure, when IE7 was new and shiny there was an excuse but now with IE8 having been out for a while there's no excuse still to have IE6 running.

If you have a specific app that needs it try virtualization and something like Spoon to run it - http://spoon.net/Browsers

Whatever happened to the email app?

OffBeatMammal

Outlook isn't just a groupwise client

I know a lot of people who use Outlook as their mailer of choice. Sure it also integrates contact management and a calendar and can talk to Exchange but it also does POP3 and IMAP really well (and has a Hotmail connector)

You also fail to mention Entourage on the Mac which is pretty awesome (and also supports Exchange, just like Mail.app)

Linux users have Evolution (which has an Exchange plug-in as well as the usual suspects)

I guess though given your "Vista 2010" jab, general Windows digs and belittling of the Windows Live Mail which despite a cumbersome name is actually a pretty good email client I guess this was actually just some material to wrap around pointless Microsoft bashing.

If you're going to be sarcastic at least make sure you disguise it with some good basic research

have a look at the new Outlook 2010 beta (and I can only guess it'll make it's way into the Windows Live Mail client at some later date) - I love that new feature.
