RIP, Swype: Thanks for all the sor--speec--speedy texting

Solanum

Thank you! I reset my phone the day they pulled it from the Play store (I hadn't seen the announcement) and it was gone when I tried to install it. Swiftkey is terrible in comparison and Gboard isn't much better. I now have it reinstalled from "my library". Phew!

Dry those eyes, ad blockers are unlikely to kill the internet

Re: People who use adblockers...

I use ad blockers because I don't want to see ads.

In fact, I don't ever want to see ads in any shape or form on any media, they annoy the cr@p out of me. When I want to buy something (and I love buying new stuff as much as the next person), I go look for the information.

Admittedly, that means I might the last to learn about some amazing new innovative device I haven't even thought might exist. What's that? You can buy an apple made from a watch? Eh?

We need to talk about SPEAKERS: Sorry, 'audiophiles', only IT will break the sound barrier

Re: There Are Audio Companies Who Care

I logged on to say exactly this (if you will excuse the pun). Most of what the author is talking about is incorporated in Linn's Exakt system. The irony for those who use audiophile as a pejorative (for reasons I've never understood - why would anyone actively want to listen to something that sounds worse than it could?) is that it is one of the most expensive hi-fi systems ever made and one I will never be able to afford.

Green German gov battles to keep fossil powerplants running

Re: @Solanum -

I think you miss the point, the lack of a significant health risk is because the people have been removed the risk, not because there is no risk. Anyway, it wasn't a point against using nuclear power it was a comment on the purposefully evasive writing used by the author. Although on the whole that is what I read the Reg for!

Solanum

I don't want to sound like an alarmist, but "Fukushima is actually set to cause no measurable radiation health effects at all)" is a rather disingenuous comment. The reports (and the linked article) actually state that the likely health effects are low enough to be unprovable statistically, which isn't quite the same thing. More importantly the statement implies no significant risk emerged, but the environmental damage is extremely large (do you fancy paying for the clean-up?) and the health effects if everyone went back to their homes in the vicinity would not be statistically undetectable. All of which is reason to think carefully about where you position your nuclear power plants!

Is NBN Co about to pay for 80 years of power pole access?

Party politics

Could there just possibly be a political angle to this? A state governed by the party that has opposed the NBN from the beginning demands many times the going rate for pole access, thus either delaying rollout ("look told you so, they can't do it on time") or causing a cost blowout ("look told you so, they can't do it on budget"). Nah, they wouldn't do that....

Monetisation.

Well, I'm in Aus too and a few days ago 'highlight' appeared. I used it once to see what it did and it said that the normal cost was GBP4.79, but it was currently free. I tried it a second time yesterday and it wanted me to pay the GBP4.79. Obviously I didn't use it! So I guess they are looking at a new income stream. Didn't take long... I cannot imagine a normal user paying that sort of money to highlight a post, so I guess it is aimed at businesses pushing themselves up your screen ala Google. One weirdness is asking me to pay in pounds when I live in Aus...
