Re: Same old, same old...
For the record: The C64 WAS better than the Specturd* and the Amiga knocked the spots of the Atari STD*. Fact.

"Commodor 64 rules!" "No - Spectrum is best!"
"Ha ha! Call the Amiga a computer? Get an Atari ST!"
"SNES forever!" "No way - Master System and Sonic!"
etc etc

All arguments heard in the playground, made by pre-pubescent boys. I doubt that iOS/Android arguments are made by anyone different.
"Samsung are way bigger by any sensible measure that's relevant to consumers - e.g., sales. Shares only matter if you're a shareholder, and if you are, you're a shill.
Game over."
What's this - 'phone company Top Trumps' "My comanpy's bigger than yours"
What lesson do you have after playtime?
"To all the haters because the OP mentioned he works in IT."
No hate - just taking the piss. IT literate but cannot sync iPod via iTunes? What about all these people who want to manually sync? WTF would you want to do that? Set up some smart playlists - 'anything added recently', 'my 5* tracks', 'stuff I've not heard for a while' - set some sensible limits - 1Gb of this, 5Gb of that - and you're sorted. You only need to do this once, then with wi-fi sync you usually don't need to touch it on a daily basis, yet still have new stuff to listen to every day.
I drag mp3/mp4 files onto the iTunes icon and next thing I know they're on my iPod/iPhone. And as for manually putting them into artist/album folders - why would I want to do that when iTunes does it for me?
Sounds like the guy a few weeks ago who claimed that despite *..building his own PCs and coding a few websites", even he couldn't get a job in IT. It's like complaining you can't get a job as an F1 driver despite having owned 2 cars and every copy of Gran Turismo.
"I'd suggest it is you that doesn't actually work in a real IT role"
hahahahhahahahahahahahahhahahahahhahaha... (breath) - Jeez, don't even begin to ask for my CV.
Not sure where you got the idea that the iTunes in question was being used in a work environment, but seriously - unable to even use iTunes?
" I've read articles talking about "pinch" multitouch zoom gesture, double click to zoom, and click and drag to scroll. All of these are in standard Android (as they should be - they're bog standard UI elements that I find it mad that could be patented)."
Just out of interest, does anyone know when these standard UI elements appeared?
Used to make bacon sandwiches for my whole team. You needed a pack of smoke bacon and 1/2 baguette per person. Lacking proper cooking facilities at work, I had to microwave the bacon on a special 'microwave bacon tray' which worked surprisingly well. A bit of butter and bacon juice on the bread, add bacon and ketchup et voila - awesome.
Healthy too, as we were never able to eat lunch afterwards...
""The purpose of the patent system is to encourage innovation, but the system is still too often exploited in pursuit of other goals," Steve Zipperstein, RIM’s chief legal officer, said in a canned statement."
Isn't this the standard quote for anyone on the losing end of a patent dispute?
"why has this same kind of lawsuit not happened in say....the car industry?"
In all seriousness, perhaps what happens is that car manufacturer B says "That's a neat type of car that A has made and is selling lots of - we'll design the same TYPE of car but with our own styling and ethos".
Just like saying "Wow - people want a phone with a better touchscreen, no stylus and good web browser etc - we'll go make one too".
Which is fine, until you start to really copy company A's design rather than just the idea. I'm pretty sure people at Mercedes were annoyed with Lexus ' not only did Lexus make a big, luxury saloon make they made it look like a Merc too (not enough that you could mistake one for t'other, but definite design similarities).
iPod, iPhone and iPad - isn't it someone else's turn to release a revolutionary device?
" the reality is that they aren't _that_ special" - they are to ther general public. when each of these devices were released, they were unlike anything else onthe market in terms of usability. And no, you can't quote 'MMS and multi-tasking' as the average member of the public didn't even know what these were.
and that to create products that compete very well with theirs is not beyond the reach of other companies.". Actually, it appears that it very hard ot create somethign original and that the public want.
I love techni-toys and really wish that some other company would bring out something cool.
"It's exactly the same as a clothing manufacturer in Thailand making fancydress shirts with the NaziI logo on, it does not make them responsible for the Nazi's actions."
A. No it's not. It would be if the clothing manufacturer onwed the trademark on the swastika and the phrase "Sieg Heil". They might then have some explaining to do re events carried out under their trademark.
B. Godwin's Law. You lose.
Answering my own question:
Apple claims it is victim to seven patent breaches including copies of its designs for the bodies of the original iPhone and the iPad as well as user-interface elements such as the bounce-back response when a person scrolls beyond the end of a list, and tap-to-zoom.
Samsung's claims cover the integration of a mobile phone, digital camera and email into a single device; bookmarking a picture in an image gallery; and using an app while continuing to listen to music in the background.
I'm pretty sure that Apple's design patent is not for 'square with round corners'. does anyone know (and that's 'know' - as in the English definition of the word, not guess, assume, pull-out-of-your-arse etc etc) exactly what is alledged to have been infringed? I^d be interested to read it.
"Because the desktop and mobile versions of Apple's operating systems have been on a collision course for some time. I would speculate that you're[*] only a few years away from an identical interface on both"
Hmmm, 10" MacBook AIr, add a touchscreen and removeable keyboard; add an 'IOS' interface like Dashboard and it's widgets and you have a potentially nice dual purpose machine.
Current rumours point to a 7.85" form factor. Coupled with the 4:3 aspect ratio andthis gives you 66% of the current iPads screen area, not 45%. (Apparently, as I haven't done the maths)

"Even simple things like embedding images in documents or emails are difficult in the streamlined iPad experience. That may make for a slick consumer experience, but it's counterproductive to getting work done in the enterprise."
Well, ignoring the fact that "embedding images in documents or emails are difficult " is easy; if it were true, how can this make for "a slick consumer experience"?
For cases where both companies and the lawyers are from the same country, then there has been little net transfer of funds outside of that country, so the net impact is low and the figure of $29B misleading. the money just circulates through society a little differently.
Even if the lawers get all the money, it's then passed on to car, yacht and house-builders and will finally trickle down to the public (except if the money gets spent, then paid as asalary, then spent again etc, most of it will end up with the government as tax of one form or another,
