Remember Netflix is suggestions for the masses. There are probably less than 100k films world wide that get watched with any frequency, excluding pron. That is a small universe.
Also, Netflix is becoming a production house with a website attached. So don't expect the selection to grow. It it the opposite.
Google has about 90% of web/mobile searches in Europe. Which, yes, more or less makes them a monopoly.
Owning the "intent" of the consumer is terrifically powerful, which is why they are so insanely valued. There are two big "buts" (no, not that kind):
Facebook owns "identity", which is why they bought Atlas and why they now tout their efficiency above Google's. In other words they serve ads to more of the right people. (yes, there is Google+ and Google Mail, but they are footnotes in the scheme of things compared to 1.6bn FB accounts)
Secondly, a monopoly, even fairly acquired, is a precarious position as any hint of abuse will attract the wrong attention. And here is one area where Europe and the US usefully have a similar stance. So Google can't leverage their advantage because they'll get called out.
So you could say Google is snookered, though that will take a long time to play out.
You analyse the performance per network and campaign. It's pretty obvious when clicks don't generate revenue. However, when you run at scale across countries it becomes trickier. The cross-over is when your staff cost to check becomes higher than the incremental efficiency gain. Nowhere near a perfect science.
Also, you need to consider the "display" value of an ad. I know we all hate ads, but the good ones, even banners, catch a fleeting moment of attention. Advertising was always thus.
You could say ITV is into the same "fraud" as Google. In the end you have no guarantees, just exposure of an uncertain value.
A long time ago I was a firefighter at a busy international airport. As part of that job you naturally had to learn where exits are, how much fuel they carry, where to spray suppressant foam etc for each type.
The scale of the 747 full fuel load was breath-taking. In reality, if one had crashed on take off, the combined water capacity of our six trucks, about 120 m^3, would not have stood a chance against the 200m^3 of fuel. Lookup up the Tenerife disaster for an illustration of what happens.
We did have one powder truck too, basically a giant fire extinguisher on six wheel, but it made such a mess it probably would have blinded and choked every escaping passenger for hundreds of yards.
At least, if the rozzers have nothing better to do than to check blue badges, then it seems crime has largely been eradicated. At least in Scotland.
As others have pointed out, it's the dickheads without badges that's the problem. And that is not a concern for the law, it's common decency. So an "oi, what do you think you're doing?", from the rest of us is what it takes.

Well, ahem, the market maker function, aka the stall keeper, has been around for a while and will probably outlast the people here on this forum. Yes, it's bigger and more corporate now, but more or less the same. Shout your wares and you may get lucky.
Now, the invisible hand needs some boundaries, and that is where we are floundering a bit in the internet age. As it seems, Europe is more prepared to set those boundaries than the US. China, I think, have no perception of public good, other than their own.

The OH's HTC One was, was, awesome until the 1y warranty ran out. Then microphone, camera and screen developed FUBAR faults in rapid succession. The mic fault seems fairly well documented.
Having said that, all the manufacturers seem to take a pretty laid back attitude to quality. Shame we can't get an actual measure of fault rate in the wild.

I recall [sorry no reference] a study suggesting the baffling 50/50 right/left split in most democracies over time is due to instinct (or genetic make-up if you will). Put simply, the quarterly massive mailout of vouchers are the single biggest driver of footfall that Tesco has. Their whole supply chain is geared towards it. On top, people spend the "extra" money on high margin items like an extra bottle of wine, not more potatoes.

Sure, Dunnhumby did some clever stuff with which discount vouchers to mail and how to tailor the range in each store, but that pales into insignificance compared to the quarterly bonanza of the vouchers.
I think Tesco's problem is, as often, corporate hubris. "Retail is detail" as James Gulliver (Safeway) said, and Tesco forgot that. They also got stuck in the middle between discounters and Waitrose/M&S.

You seem to misunderstand the meaning of innovation. It means bringing things to market in a way that makes commercial sense. It doesn't really matter if it has been done elsewhere.
First mover advantage is one of the great drivers of profit.

Many moons ago I was an airport fire engine truck driver. It is obviously pretty important they don't fail if a 747 is burning after a crash.
So we drove them for one hour every day. Clearly not practical for a UPS scenario, but it does point the way if you really want an oil burner UPS.
Separately, since fuel consumption is of no concern in UPS scenarios, why is petrol not considered? I suspect it's because generators are built for long term fuel efficient use.

OK, Iet's assume you work with code (sorry, second time today I have a dev go). That's like saying "let's get users to write some proper prose in my /whatever/ application, otherwise it doesn't matter what my code behaves like". Yes it does. It raises the standard. Borderline analogy, but you get my point.
