Bradley Manning: 'I'm sorry my actions hurt the United States'

wowfood

I have no issue with the gender dysmorphia, just the aspergers.

wowfood

Firstly. ASPERGERS IS NOT A FUCKING DEFENSE! I REALLY FUCKING HATE WHEN THEY FUCKING USE FUCKING ASPERGERS AS A FUCKING DEFENSE FOR A FUCKING CRIME! And now cruise control is off. Sorry, I'm just getting fed up of that being the go to defense. It's starting to look like everybody who commits a crime has aspergers allegedly.

And now on to my originally planned post

"I'm sorry," Manning said. "I'm sorry that my actions hurt people. I'm sorry that they hurt the United States."

Did he say this with any emotion? Or did he sound like a robot, or a broken man who had been brainwashed into believing that he'd actually damaged the USA in some way.

AOL boss: Soz about that 'Abel, you're fired!' Patch showdown

wowfood

There is a difference between not caring after the fact, and being complacent in letting the act take place.

Here's a better example. A real life example. My sister had her bike stolen. She called the police and they didn't care. A bike isn't high up on their radar and internally they don't care about one being stolen when they have car thefts, burglery, rape, and immediate crimes to take care of. Why don't they care about a bike? How will they identify it? A bike is a bike is a bike. A blue Ford Fiesta with the registration J876 SSX is possible to find and return. But if you steal a bike in front of a police officer they will arrest you.

As such the minimum effort will go into returning a stolen bike because it's not possible. When information is leaked, they can't unleak it, it's not possible so they don't care. It doesn't mean however that they will let it leak.

wowfood

Yeah, completely missing the piont there. There's a difference between "I don't care about leaks" and "I will let them happen"

If a product leaks, it leaks. There's nothing to be done about it once it's out so accepting them is the best policy, otherwise you're just wasting your time and money as well as making yourself look silly. Allowing leaks to happen however is a different story. Acceping something will happen and allowing it to happen are two totally different things.

As a further note this is a transcript I found for the section about leaks

I don’t care what the press says, I don’t care if people leak information. I’ve already lived through that at AOL — when I took over AOL — so if you need somebody to blame for why we’re making changes at Patch you can blame me. I take full responsibility.

wowfood

I think it was more the point of he'd warned that particular employee not to film before. If your boss explicitly tells you not to do something and then you do it again, you should be fired.

Larry Ellison: Google is ABSOLUTELY EVIL, but NSA is ESSENTIAL

Re: Meh,

What I don't get is why Larry(evil_1) is still beaing the dead horse over the java issue. It's as good as over, the courts have sided with Larry(evil_2) repeatedly. Moreover Larry(evil_2) had the java clone made when Sun owned it, and Sun have testified in googles favour!

That and comparing not the competing company, but the individual Larry(evil_2) to criminals, accusing him of theft, accusing him of being 'Absolutely Evil' etc. Isn't he opening himself up to some kind of libel case?

Netflix dares UK freetards: Watch new Breaking Bad NOW or torrent it?

wowfood

Re: torrent it

Yeah that stuff. Also glad to see they have a single... well I guess it's an installer, for all the stuff. Much easier than tracking them down individually.

wowfood

Re: torrent it

not officially no. But there is a workaround involving firefox and setting something... I forget what. Doesn't work as well as the real PC version, but it works well enough.

wowfood

I pretty much stopped downloading most stuff when Crunchyroll came out. Netflix just got me to cancel my TV license.

wowfood

Streaming the brand new, hotly awaited programmes to UK fans within hours of their premiere in America is seen as an industry first and a clear move to tackle copyright piracy.

You mean like the Simulticasts on Crunchyroll which airs anime with subs normally an hour or so after the original japanese episode airs?

Because really it's not much of an industry first, more like an industry second.

Second LulzSec Sony website hacker starts a year in the cooler

wowfood

As idiotic as it is to hack a megacorp and leak customers information etc, I kinda feel sorry for the guy. Not for the jail or the community service, but the fine on top. Lets face it, he's never going to be able to pay that. Hell, even if he could get a good job after spending a year in jail I doubt he could pay that.

I'd have to work around 25 years to save up that amount, And that's just to earn that amount, if you take living expenses etc he's basically going to be paying back that fine for the rest of his life.

I mean lets face it, there are rapists, child molesters and violent criminals who get fined less than that. They should at least lower the fine to something sane that the guy might be able to pay off.

Publishers stand behind Apple in ebook price-fixing fight

wowfood

Re: Oh the irony

More to the point they're saying they're being punished because they can't sell books via Apple. But the DoJ has said that apple must allow ebook sales via google / amazon et al. Surely that circumvents the 'we're losing out our apple customers' complaint the ebook pubs have, right?

Facebook turns tables on profile stalkers with News Feed tweak

wowfood

Okay

but can they stop pages I don't want appearin gin my news feed from appearing?

One page keeps sharing links from another page I frequentlly visit. I then get things in my news feed. "BLAH has just shared a post from videogames." I have continuously said "Stop showing this page in my newsfeed" and facebook continues to ignore me.

Much like it ignores my "I want to recieve notifications from this page" and won't give me the notifications, which used to work.

Can't agree on a coding style? Maybe the NEW YORK TIMES can help

wowfood

Re: Personally

I suppose by the end of it the only style guide that really applies is what's already in place.

As much as I prefer

{

stuff

}

fed may prefer

{

stuff }

and harry may like

{ stuff }

Each is just as viable as the last (code isn't set in stone like grammar) so really the style you use should be the style of the rest of the code.

If an entire project is done this_is_my() { face }

then I'll write it in that way. If it's my own project, I'll write it the way I prefer. It's really down to the project, it's kind've why coding standards existi in companies (and if they don't then they should.)

wowfood

Personally

even if it's only a single line, I'd prefer to seperate my if statements

if ( !error )

{

return success;

}

likewise I like method headers, function headers, comments that explain why we're doing rather than what we're doing. In the above a comment along the lines of "returns a success message if there is not an error" makes me want to bash my head into a wall. If you need a comment for that then you probably need to be warned that the coffee is hot and might burn your tongue, or that not everyone likes spouts.

I set my tabs to 4 spaces in VS, but that's just because it seemed like the nicest fit.

Additionally I prefer putting in spaces around braces and parenthesis quite simply because it makes larger functions easier to read, and easier to track the last closing brace.

Meaningful method names are a must. Likewise for params. I don't want to see a a1 a2 a3, I'd rather see *player player1 player2 player3.

Prefer camelCase to snake_case, it's somewhat grown on me. Anyone who mixes the two ala this_FunctionalMethod should be shot in the foot.

I think that about covers the basics. *begins writing his own style guide*

Actually I have noticed alcohol makes a mile improvement before. Especially when playing pool. Start off okay, first couple pints my game improves amazingly. Then it gets worse, and then I can't get teh pool queue on my hand.

I have noticed there's a tipping point however, between my eyes slowing down, and my brain failing to compensate any more.

And yeah, nystagmus isn't the only problem. Occular Albenism, comes with all the bells and whistles, Myopia, photophobia, nystagmus, I'm always convinced there's a fourth one, but can never remember what it is.

wowfood

True as that may be. I think people who have genuine mental problems are still probably brighter than a lot of people you see online. At least if they get stuck they're smart enough to grab a calculator.

wowfood

You can't ask them what colour the sun is. You'd be taken to court after one dumb user blinds himself.

Can't stand Captchas. I'm registered partially sighted, but on a bad day that can easily lower my vision to the levels of legally blind. (I have nystagmus, my visual ability varies greatly based on stress or how tired I am.)

I can agree whole heartedly that Captchas suck monkey nuts. I've seen a few very good alternatives to Captcha which work rather well. Here's a few of them just to give options.

Sergey Brin's 'test-tube burger' cooked, eaten, declared meat-like

wowfood

I imagine part of the taste problem is the lack of fats etc. Whenever I've made burgers at home it's always the fatty cuts you use to make burgers. Any lean meats tend to dry out a bit and leave less flavour, while the fat melts a tad and gives it a much better taste.

Man... I want a steak burger.

I don't mind ads

It's just the number of them, or rather the frequency. Like watching a film on chanel 4, every single time you get to a good bit, "Commercial break, sponsored by a car"

Far as I'm concerned Netflix doesn't interrupt my viewing with ads, gives me a choice in what I watch and when, rather than just "you can watch this now... or change channels"

It has a larger range of viewing material. It just ticks all the right boxes.

That and the fact we barely get digital signal down here helps to make the decision.
