Re: its always about the money
Do I detect some sarcasm in there? ! Seriously companies are short sighted when it comes to this kind of thing, it might improve the profits in the short term but in the long soon as someone realises the real cost of employing these idiots - such as poor customer service , poor software quality and when they need to hire someone to fix it - there won't be anyone! .
its always about the money
Well it will be goodbye to their customer service , software quality and reputation. Also
" UK staff will be asked to help train those workers in India." why would you do this !????
I'd like to see government contracts going to Uk companies with the proviso that use UK workers. Data protection law should be tightened to stop foreign nationals having access to UK data and that would go some way to stop this kind of thing from happening .
Don't give up
They may have some dodgy phones - i don't like the keyboards on the curve ( too small) but loads do - mainly teenagers !. The touch phones are good though. The fact that at the moment you can write apps for them in RIM java or standard Java - portable across Nokias as well I think is great. Lets not forget the iphone is just the latest trendy fad fone and doesn't really offer anything more in functionality at all were else can the iphone go !.
So nothing really new then ! all that time , effort and brain power. Just goes to show that NFC will probably not take off - just don't see the point of it.
This is why BT and Talk Talk rank the highest for Poor customer service - lots of offshore call centre staff ( veer from the script at your peril!). Santander brought the off shore jobs back to the Uk due to poor service. There are many solutions :- when you call a call centre ask to be put through to your home country, Buy local services. Many textile businesses that were lost have started to come back as the costs of shipping stuff round the world - has increased due to the oil price, now makes more economic sense to bring it back - and good.
Re: "This is the country"
Unfortunately not they can write code too. But how do you compete with a country that pays its programmers about 1000 pounds a year ! they're already infilitrating linkedin etc etc with their adverts poaching working from us. Having dealt with the software that they write most of the time it needs rewriting because its crap.
This is the country that can't build anything of their own all they do is copy our stuff and do it cheaper. This is the country that still makes a car thats over 50 years old ! . They read from a script they know nothing beyond it ! , I spent over 20 minutes once working for BT explaining what a gas pipe is !. The sooner people and companies realise that they are providing poor service , crap software the better..
You pay peanuts you get monkeys ...
Say NO to Offshore
These f***ers are useless anyway . There should be some tightening of Uk data protection laws to stop OUR personal data from being accessed by foreign nationals. BT are one of those were they have call centres in Bangalore these people are useless not one person I know thinks offshore call centres are good thing !. Just to illustrate the point I had to explain for about 20 mins to one of them what a gas pipe was !.
You could of course just pick up the phone or call round at someones desk and actually speak to them ! Thats if we remember what a phone is for !
Well I tried android dev through the Eclipse plugin and gave up as it was crap , very slow and cumbersome. I shall stick to Blackberry and Nokia java development where i can write the same app and can be used on both types of phones. Blackberries OS and Symbian3 are far better OS's both work well and apps can be easilty written for both. Although I shall probably have to learn c# so that i can write apps for windows phone seeing as they don't support java !.
Re: Wake up
The reason why programming in the UK is being outsourced is not the level of English ( mine or anyone elses) it is a fact that it is cheaper abroad. You may have noticed that programming languages won't compile with spelling mistakes therefore they have to be correct !.
Training whats that never had any in years, employers dont even seem to realise that your skills in abc programming language could transfer to xyz language with minimal learning. Business programming at the end of the day is basically the same whether you do it on Oracle, sap or in RPG400 ( my old lanuage !) .. Better wake up India is coming an they learn and they will take your jobs .
Re: why London
As an aside - maybe we developers in the North should set up our own Showcase and show everyone else what we can do up here!.
Why is it always London there are programmers, people with good ideas, entrpreneurs in the rest of the country too you know !.
java and mobile devices
The problem java faces on mobile devices is that the device makers are moving away from supporting it. Blackberrys new OS qns base doesn't use java and neither does windows phone 7 or 8 ( whatever its called!) .
As to COBOL the truth is a good language will not die it does what is does reliably.
