.. StarOffice > OpenOffice > LibreOffice = NoProblemo ..
didn't realize <sarcasm></sarcasm> tags were necessary</sigh>
"This equates to 200,000 units in a global market where more than 40 million tablets were flogged."
not bad for a start up with a unique OS and look about it .. did they spend much in the way of development on this ? .. marketing money ? .. haven't seen any out in the wild yet ..
I'll be on my way now
Intel as a contract foundry
That's important news .. there are more than a few non-competing companies that would like to use tri-gate and have Intel's shrink earlier than competitors .. Nvidia comes to mind .. this is really an Intel vs TSMC thing ..
Intel will gladly leave AMD stuck with Global Foundries
Intel is already the *in* the foundry environment .. doing big custom projects for years .. in a sense they already are a foundry for Google .. Facebook .. Amazon server designs .. Apple for Mac ..
I wonder .. if one were to estimate the in-house foundry value of chips produced by Intel .. how would that compare to TSMC ? ... TSMC 2011 sales $14.6 billion .. Intel sales $46.5 billion
Is it possible Intel is already the largest foundry producer by income ?
.. at 'KitKat' eh ? .. won't be long till little android 'M&Ms' then ..
crap + crap = larger crap
from the joint company statement .. “This element provides Microsoft with the opportunity to extend its service offerings to a far wider group around the world while allowing Nokia's mobile phones to serve as an on-ramp to Windows Phone,”
More likely Windows Phone will be Nokia's off-ramp from the mobile phone business
more throw away claptrap
"This area’s ice sheet contributes to sea level rise and this work can help us put current changes in context"
why do these people though out this clap trap at the end of an otherwise interesting article ?
The Greenland Ice thickness has increased by 2"-5mm net per year since 1992 .. seems warmer air and warmer ocean currents cause more snow to fall .. well in excess to some increased Summer melt .. so if anything .. Greenland may have a contributed a bit to the sea levels lowering in 2010-2011 .. but definitely not contributing to sea level rise .. because there is no net loss of ice sheet in Greenland for 20 years .. and we don't know the extent of loss or gain prior to 1992
meh .. not going to help MS value
while i think it's a good deal to severe Ballmer with $1 billion .. doubt the stock price rise will last .. only good thing coming up for MS is the death of XP next year forcing business and real PC user hold outs to Win7
there's the new Xbox too .. but that's likely a money loser for a couple of years
there are two kinds of people .. salesmen and those that know right from wrong
as an ATT broadband customer my web email interface is yahoo .. my "master" yahoo ID is some dumb thing I used for a geocities website .. right now I haven't transferred my email client accounts from one PC to the one I'm using now .. so I go through the 4 accounts I have with ATT through the web .. I suppose those count as visitors to Yahoo! .. though it's about 10 minutes a week .. one I've not checked in weeks .. while I'm doing business with my gmail account .. which is up on my PC regularly through the day .. and notifies my on my Galaxy S3 where I can read and reply as well .. do web design and have a web master account with Google .. watch quite a bit of youtube .. use other Google services occasionally .. Google+
so while I may be a visitor .. and it is my providers web front .. I don't "use" Yahoo! for anything .. don't spend any time on their web properties that I'm aware of .. getting rarer to see Yahoo! News! links even ..
Re: stop the partisan bs
yes .. if one starts from the June 1979 data point .. which was nearly 0.2C below 1980 to 1981 .. that is correct .. and clearly stated that I was starting on that zero point year ..
regardless .. the 73 climate models used by self designated climate scientists don't stand up over the 33 years of observation ..
or I bet you think ocean temperatures are rising ..
read the whole site .. at least get the informed opinion of a degreed atmospheric scientist with a PhD in meteorology .. a former Senior Scientist of Climate Studies at NASA .. and with Dr. Christy .. the guy that analyses all of the NASA satellite date related to the atmosphere ..
and stop hanging around Gavin Schmidt's RealClimate blog network .. that guy won't even take questions from Spencer when they are in the same studio ..
Re: stop the partisan bs
NomNomNom ... let me help you here .. the 1980 temperature was the same as the 1981 to 2010 average ..
the smoothed rolling average on January 1980 was zero difference from the 1981 to 2010 average
the smoothed rolling average on January 2013 was 0.24C higher than the 1981 to 2010 average
0.24C divided by 33 years = 0.00728C rise per year average = 0.073 rise per decade ..
stop the partisan bs
people .. you really need to read the newer studies .. and understand a computer model is not a study of fact based on observation .. yes .. the world warmed between 1910 and 1940 .. 30 years in a more steady manner .. and to a greater degree than from 1980 to present .. then it cooled from 1940 to 1976 or so .. not steadily .. but from 1934 to 1939 there was no arguably warmer years until 1998 and 2010.. you get a quick 0.2C rise from about 1976 to 1980 .. and we have James Hansen in 1981 publish his paper theorizing man generated CO2 would cause dangerous global warming with the projections based on certain assumptions used in his and everyone else's computer models .. in 1979 we start to get accurate world temperature reading from NASA satellites ..
taking either the 1980 temp at baseline .. or the 1981-2010 average .. the same as 1980 .. the current rolling 13 month average is 0.24C warmer over 30 years .. July 2013 was 0.17C warmer .. so on a linear basis .. which I know the warming alarmists prefer ( cause it was cooler from 1980 to 1997 which means there has been no 20 year warming trend at all since 1940 ) .. we've warmed 0.08 degrees per decade .. well within even Hansen's narrow band of natural variability .. and well below ALL the projections of temperature rise .. even those that presumed humans would stop increasing emissions by 2000 or earlier
observation .. the only valid way to test theory .. has shown Hansen's and IPCC projections to be wrong .. so wrong it would be statistically impossible for them to come true by 2050 .. or 2100
that man's land use has contributed to some of the warming is clear .. we modified over 40% of the land below timberline .. we know that our aerosols cool the atmosphere .. that our black soot is more responsible for arctic ice melt than air temperature .. we just had the least days of over -1.8C temp ( sea ice freeze temp ) in the arctic since those records were kept .. 1954 .. the current temp is at least 3 weeks earlier than normal ..
so the point is not that Australia happened to get soaked .. it's that the warmer air world wide holds more moisture ..which has resulted in the last 4 years .. with increased precipitation .. snow and rain .. that so much happened to fall in Australia is interesting .. but it's more likely the large .. sometime record snowfalls in the north US .. Canada .. Russia .. that are locking up that ocean water .. and some portion of the equally heavy rains and cool weather this spring found it's way to depleted aquifers .. it's also possible the oceans will cool because of significantly lower solar activity .. lowest in 50 years for sure .. maybe 200 years .. this will take a while .. or it may be having an effect already .. measuring *average* sea level accurately is extraordinarily difficult considering all the other factors determining sea level in a particular place .. 1m swells .. 3m tides .. wind and ocean current temperature effects on a region make it hard to buy a 5mm accuracy on sea level over the entire world
the ocean levels contract because there is more moisture locked up in snowpack .. despite the concensus media .. the greenland ice sheet has grown by an average of 2" / 5mm a year since 1992 .. and no one is certain which way it went from 1961 to 1991 from the few stations on the island .. so the warming alarmists can wring there hands about a *record* summer melt of 0.5" .. they ignore the fact that the warmer arctic air is increasing snow fall resulting in a 2" net gain each year ..
Market is fluid
"only four per cent kept their handset for three years or more"
think this will change .. in the last 18-24 months the higher end smartphones are quite capable of a 4 year+ life
S3 .. iPhone4+ .. can't foresee needing more than this S3 performance-feature wise .. right size for that over 35 group for sure .. phones are less easy to break .. users are learning to break them less .. mine's never been out of it's Otter case in the year I've had it
Re: anyone know the breakdown
"smartphones" .. is what it says
don't get it ..
if you are merely providing secure hosting and other legal software .. the server or VPS for 2 IP addresses for 2 nameserver domains and set up domains (which the account holder owns) and a mail server for people ..
how are you not protected under the various Safe Harbor provisions ? .. for crimes committed using email or a website when you providing the hardware and network management .. don't even have access to the root username or password ?
a VPS with 2 unique IP addys and root access for unlimited domains is cheap .. now if i set up an email account on my own web server .. have my own name servers and mail server .. who exactly can request me .. as the host .. to turn over my email ?!? .. isn't there a self incrimination issue there ?
and they WOULD be stupid enough to contact me first .. as the host .. for email@example.com .. for example .. at which point if i gave a shit about what's in my emails generated or received through fuckoffnsa.com .. they would no longer exist .. and fuckoffnsa.com would blink off the web for a few minutes .. wiped from the server .. reloaded with some relevant content with the sole .. legally required firstname.lastname@example.org contact email
Re: What's not clear...
I dunno .. Samsung usually has their shit together and would expect a new production product is going to exceed the competition in most specs and params .. rather than suspicious ..
have to wonder where else Samy might use the "3D" tech .. ARM chip maybe ? SoCs ?
Re: Hah something Science can't explain
sorry .. CNN in the 2000 election turned the republicans to commie red and the dems to sky blue ..
life was easier when the dems were the commies and the repubs nazis .. ya can't tell which is which anymore
really Iian ? .. you might think we are a backward christian theocracy .. but all most all of us did go to school to the point of learning geology and how the solar system and earth were formed and how long ago .. ditto with life .. evolution .. Y .. and X chromosomes too ! .. 30% may say they believe in the bible .. or Jesus .. but there is no way 30% think the world is just 10,000 years old
the internet will be at risk ..
will be building a Windows 7 machine soon .. that's for features and hardware XP won't handle .. otherwise will be keeping 2 XP machines running .. Windows problems are mostly caused by the piss poor hardware in most Win Boxen .. and negligent users .. Win95 O/S R2 32bit .. Win98SE .. both stable for the time I used them .. I've really needed no more from the Windows UI than 98SE .. Run XP in Classic so it looks like Win2000 .. also a sufficient O/S .. and I will keep my XP machines running ..
at some point soon after April 2014 .. XP will need to be isolated from the internet .. there's a lot of cash strapped SMBs that might get 3 or 4 Win7 machines where needed facing the web .. but businesses are running all kinds of programs and machinery on XP ( Win3.1 too!).. on machines that have years of life if maintained ... that being said ..
there will likely be a very serious internet security problem develop if 35% .. or even 10% of machines on the internet are running XP without security patches for the O/S and IE .. those machines will be owed within months despite the efforts of anti-virus .. security companies and government agencies .. we might be talking about 200 million machines or more to be owned .. even a 10 million machine botnet could f**k things up royally
so while MS is not obligated to keep XP secure beyond April 2014 .. if they don't .. or don't co-operate to have others do so .. the internet connected world is going to be cracked wide open and disrupted at minimum
this is a National Security issue for almost every nation in the world .. the data breech potential for industry .. banking .. a cyberwar full-on perhaps ? ..
don't think it would be unreasonable an alliance of the EU and the Americas to require MS to continue security updates for WinXP and related MS software .. US alone could require it ..
Paris .. because I've been a bit dramatic
When Jobs was alive ..
.. Apple's statements didn't sound so whiny .. like they are in a state of denial .. desperate ..
"allowing Samsung or Apple stumble as they inevitably must"
a. Apple stumbles .. Samsung picks up market share .. oh wait ..
b. Samsung stumbles .. other Android makers gain market share
c. Windows Phone might as well be named Stumbles Phone
d. don't think a savvy strategic business plan would normally presume one or more competitors will stumble
oh .. Microsoft doesn't sue Google because Google now owns Motorola's 17,000 patents ..
... in 1984 ...
the PC market was saturated with competing platforms .. Mac .. IBM XT/AT .. Commodore ..
all the people that really needed computers pretty much had them .. growth was getting stagnant ..
yup .. it's the republica ... oh wait ..
correct you are sir ! .. and also the Democrats held a super majority ( over 60% ) in both houses in 1978
IIRC .. shortly after these secret courts were established .. Carter revealed the existence of the Top Secret SR-71 Spy plane .. Air Force intel and the CIA were not happy ..
In that context .. can understand Carter having empathy with Snowden
Everything that would be usefull in a SmartWatch ..
can be miniaturized into a SmartRing™ .. that would normally display the time ..
P2P > Server/Client ... MP > MMP
Quake and Unreal were indeed breakthrough .. however there were no games in 1997 nor in Summer 1998 that had Multiplay other than Peer to Peer .. and one was lucky to get 8 players in stable .. no real team play possible .. usually small and uninspiring mission areas for frame rate considerations ..
Then came (Starsiege) Tribes in Nov. 1998 .. the first FPS that included proper Server/Client code ( Red Baron 3D was first a couple of weeks before .. both titles were Dynamix products ) ..
having MMP with team play possible changed everything .. Unreal .. at that point .. had to become Unreal Tournament or the franchise would have died
When Tribes was made .. the game industry's consensus was that a release that was MultiPlay only could not succeed .. and within a few short years all the biggest shooters were Server Client MMP .. and still are .. Single Player there for a few hours fun and training to fight in MMP .. as I view things
err ... no .. DoJ .. SEC could have shut Microsoft down in 2001-2002 .. instead a panel of government experts got the OS source code for 5 years .. Microsoft got a slap on the wrist ..
and seeing that MS settled November 2001 .. I'll *speculate* that NSA .. DoJ .. CIA .. CSS .. FBI .. DEA .. DHS .. DNI .. hell .. there's about 50 US intelligence agencies that have access to your Windows machine if it's on the network .. not to mention dozens of foreign and extra-national entities that have probably figured the access out or spied it away from some insecure US gov Windows 'puter
worse really .. most idiots can search "Moon Treaty" .. and come up with the Outer Space Treaty that was ratified by Congress and signed by LBJ in 19 freekin' 67 .. do these guys have dozens of staff .. no one thought to check existing law or treaty ?
"outer space, including the Moon and other celestial bodies, is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means". However, the State that launches a space object retains jurisdiction and control over that object."
IOW .. Congress can not declare an historical site on the moon without violating the treaty .. the US may own the objects left .. however .. one might make the case .. under international salvage law and precedent .. that the US could not do a damn thing if a private party were to .. say .. go salvage a lunar rover or US flag .. as the objects are clearly abandoned and not within US territory
eh .. eh .. he said ..
snigger .. eh .. eh ..
Randy has the same connotation in the USA .. is Schatter even a word ? .. never heard it ..
Thanks for sharing about Fanny though .. you need a degree in the UK to know such things ?
checking the coat to be sure my S3's not hot
Re: WTF... "No taxation without representation"
There was a point made by some long term Congressman as the vote came up for ObamaCare .. that if a representative is unable to read nor understand a bill and it's consequences .. how can that representative represent the will of his constituents ?
one can not possibly represent another on legislation without understanding the law being proposed
Well .. Alexander Hamilton stockpiled tons of tea leaf in his warehouses in Boston .. before paying a bunch of guys to dump an unpaid load off a Brit Merchant ship .. his profits on that and other business dealings helped finance the Revolution .. which why he was the first Treasury Secretary and is on our $10 bill
Our Revolution was more about Bank of England and Merchant class policies than anything else
yet now we've allowed the Fed to do basically the same for 100 years .. in every country with a Central Bank the average citizens are getting fleeced for trillion$ of assets and give up the largest portion of the fruits of their labors to taxes and fees to a corrupt and rich political class in bed with the military industrial extra-national Corp cabal .. which the Central Banks finance ( because your taxes don't cover it ) selling security-debt in each country's name .. with The People's labor having to pay for it some day ..
however .. the F-22 at the Miramar Air Show last October was AWESOME
probably China .. and definitely Russia has images of young Snowdon's HDDs and .. errr .. *acquired* the keys by now ..
WTF was he thinking ? .. "I'll just go to ret. KGB Col. Putin .. he'll ensure my safe passage !"
oh no !
Apple really has to stop giving Microsoft UI ideas to force on the users .. in a poorly implemented form .. of future Windows versions
it's SO obvious !
all it needs is rounded corners !
"the" hacker ? .. they might need to hand out numbered tickets !
I predict there will be at least 47 hackers waiting for the convention to open .. to claim that $150,000
might be worse than Walmart on black friday
Re: All well and good...
firstly .. ARM chip makers can't use intel's trigate / 3D FinFET tech .. which is why power draw is low .. so 20 - 22nm might be hard to achieve .. despite IBM lab examples .. Most new ARM and GPU chip process is a 32nm today and has greater volt leakage .. especially when cranked up to 1.5Ghz or more
secondly .. TSMC is having difficulty in scaling up 28 nm production .. GlobalFoundries has barely ramped it's 28 nm line .. both had claimed last year to be going to 20nm by the end of this year .. but that seems unlikely in quantity until well into 2014 .. Intel .. which has shown itself a *bit* more reliable on process roadmaps .. will be at 14nm in quantity by mid 2014
those that think intel won't gain significant inroads in the SoC business are just not paying attention to history .. Intel does not enter a market unless it sees a profitable future in it ..
perhaps intel likes to control the architecture of it's chips ... not license and therefore dependent .. or felt it couldn't compete .. with a profit against established players .. Qualcomm .. Samsung .. Xscale .. Apple .. TI .. Intel .. if you are paying attention .. doesn't bother competing in GPU either .. except as integrated in the chip die .. why compete with nVidia .. when they can co-operate and keep their common competitors .. like AMD .. suppressed together ?
Americans are NOT being terrorized !
*who* are the terrorists we have this *war* on ?
can they exist if 99.99% of Americans have ZERO fear .. much less *terror* in going about their daily lives ?
yes indeed .. there are individuals and groups in the world .. even our own soil that have plans to cause mayhem and destruction .. our intelligence agencies need to FOCUS on those individuals and groups .. use their time investigating .. infiltrating and spying on those people .. NOT casting a wide net in violation of the 4th amendment
digital data is just representative of your personal effects .. your writings .. your freedom to travel without the government .. on any level needing to know .. unless they have probable cause that you are committing a crime
really .. I must ask .. what are the governments of the US and Europe afraid of ?.. that you must spy on the activities and word-thoughts of your Citizens ? .. for what reason are the state and federal governments in the USA so hell bent on disarming The People ?
the *war on terror* .. at least on the part of the US government .. is a straw man ruse .. Americans do NOT live in fear nor terror of anti-american groups on our soil .. there can not be terrorists without terror ..
Re: So disappointing.....
"Americans ... duped by the fear of terrorists"
excuse me .. out of the 1000s of Americans I know and have known since 9/11/01 ( or ever ) .. haven't met ONE that has a 'fear of terrorists' .. NEVER have heard a regular citizen say they are afraid to go to the local market .. or a sporting event .. no fear of crossing bridges .. no fear of flying ( because of terrorists )
a good majority have however .. been duped into thinking the liberals are there "for the people" when *all* US politicians .. with sadly few exceptions .. are there for themselves and their military-industrial-bankster-megacorp buddies ..
With Bush and the Republicans .. you'd get a "Let's see how we can fool them today" type statement every 3-4 weeks .. with Obama's administration .. every speech now contains multiple incredulous statements and the rest of the prose is on the order of:
"We can all agree that sunny days at 72F is where we want to go and I will fight the partisan divisions to ensure, for future generations .. that the sky continues to be the blue."
'ordinary man' ? .. plus 10 pints of ale .. "can tell the difference .."
now if Samsung were to start putting chewed fruit* logos on it's products .. could see the problem
Apple .. suing reliable / quality suppliers a company depends on .. that it can not buy out .. is just stupid business ..
jus' wanna mention that that wordpress can be used on any PHP installed server and can contain any content, whether wordpress.com ( which of course can censor what it wishes there ) likes it or not
there is .. of course .. the Sh^d0wPr0n kingdom of Yahoo! Groups
"They’ve discovered the nexus of antiquated copyright laws, paralyzing social stigma, and unaffordable defense costs.”
I think we need Judge Wright to take a look at the MPAA's and RIAA's *legal* abuse .."the only enterprise they resemble is RICO."
All I'm wondering is ..
what do Intel and nVidia have up their sleeves for CPU/GPU shared memory that will beat AMD out of the gate by a year to 18 months on a smaller process .. say 14nm ..
* HSA Foundation, of which AMD is merely one of many members along with fellow cofounders ARM, Imagination Technologies, Samsung, Texas Instruments, Qualcomm, and MediaTek.*
Notable lack of Intel .. nVidia .. you'd think Google would be interested in the tech as well ..
down votes expected .. <sigh>
SFPD and CHP
for over 30 years IIRC, in California, spec for a police interceptor is 115mph top speed .. and while some models can approach 130mph they are normally limited to 120mph for reliability issues and, believe it or not, legal liability issues .. Crown Vic is no more .. and I'll tell you at 120mph it does not handle safely on a typical urban - suburban Freeway
anything faster than 100mph .. we just bring out the helicopters and radio ahead
Re: Plague of AC's
think it's bs to post without your known handle or name
just don't bother with the trolls, which most AC are .. too much trouble to type "AC@XX.XX and too much trouble to scroll up the page to find which AC the reply is referring to
we *could* just ignore AC posts or down vote them regardless of comment .. suspect that would reduce the number
EA had an interesting and well designed game in Motor City Online .. over 12 years ago
.. was online only .. the net code was a lag filled clusterfuck and anti-cheat was non-existent .. bitched about it loudly during the beta test .. servers were shut down less than 2 years later
"Previous Motor City Online users were offered access to The Sims Online, Ultima Online, or Earth & Beyond"
so EA has long experience with dropping support once the profit's gone or if it's never made
If humans die off ..
... they'll be no one to care about it ...
Re: If it is ~ same efficiency as plants .. why not just use plants?
exactly .. funnel the exhaust of fossil fuel plants to greenhouses .. mix with enough air to bring the CO2 level to something below 5000ppm .. and you get quite more efficient conversion into biomass than plants at the current 400ppm .. some Algae are very efficient at conversion at 5000ppm .. or grow other plants .. food .. all of which thrive quite well at 2000ppm CO2 levels
fossil fuel .. IE .. HYDROcarbons also release more H2O molecules than CO2 molecules when burned .. so you get humidity and warmth for the greenhouses in the bargain .. perhaps allowing them to work in places too cold for greenhouses normally year round
Re: Excess oxygen
that "Once upon a time" was before 1.5 billion years ago, when fungi developed .. trees have been around for about 400 million years .. and currently lock up about 80% of the above ground Carbon
The last plant family to evolve .. interestingly enough .. were grasses about 40 million years ago .. able to deal with the lower and decreasing CO2 levels below 1000ppm starting 60 million years ago .. between 250 million years ago and 60 million years ago .. CO2 levels swung between 1000ppm and 2500ppm
over the last 600 million years there was about a 50 million year period when oxygen levels were as high as 25-28% .. 100s of millions of years that it was below 15% .. today it is about 21% ..
the largest dragon fly species had a 30 inch wingspan .. Late Permian . about 280-260 million years ago when both O2 and CO2 levels were similar to today's .. more likely ... those large insects had no predators like birds, allowing the large sizes ..
knowing a small OEM and repair shop that's been around since 1984 .. by FAR most customers, including gamers want the reliability first .. I don't care how "cutting edge" the PC a customer has .. they are NOT happy when hardware dies or glitches even occasionally
other than one failing hard drive I was able to clone completely, not losing a thing .. I have not had a piece of hardware fail in over 15 years .. all Intel CPU and the 2 most recent .. Intel Mobos ..
have a 200MMX Win95b machine that I boot up every few months just to see if it will .. same with a P3 667 Win98SE .. those both have GigaByte boards, in those times, the reliable choice
oh fine then .... NearFieldComms ... excellent ... no need for dongle in smartphones ...
however ... iphone doesn't do NFC either ... come on Apple ...
