Neither was OSX.

Apple and Samsung STILL in bitchfight over banning ancient mobes

What can Microsoft learn from 'discontinued operations' at Nokia?

Yeah, they seemed to forget that in 2012 WP7 phone sales dropped drastically once the details of WP8 became known.

<<<If you can't/won't avoid sharing information, you can at least spread it around a bit so one company doesn't have the full picture. >>>

It doesn't take much for a company to have a good idea about you, so spreading it around means that instead of one company has a "very good" idea about you, three or four may only have a "good" idea about you.

No, Samsung would be ripping off the far older Motorola Atrix.

Apple-aligned firm opens sapphire glass factory. iPhone 6 rumours, DEPLOY

fishman

Re: sapphire glass scratches ?

Same here - my Seiko watch has sapphire glass, and no scratches. And I'm not gentle - the band and case are heavily scratched.

It's not surprising Apple is doing this - it will get harder and harder to differentiate premium smartphones in the future. At least until the next big thing is figured out.

Microsoft tries to trademark 'Mod' in the US

fishman

Back to the 70's

"Mod" was popular back in the 1970's (and probably the 60's, too). Remember the TV show "The Mod Squad"?

When I think of "Mod", I think of Disco and bell bottom pants - things I don't want to relive.

Marketshare

While WP may have a marketshare of ~ 10% in some areas, worldwide the marketshare is 3.6% - the same as what Windows Mobile + Windows Phone had a couple of years ago.

WHAT!? Lenovo THIRD-largest smartmober - Chinese grab local kit

fishman

Re: Perspective

A couple of years ago, the marketshare for Windows Mobile + Windows Phone was around 3.6%. Now that Windows Mobile is gone, Windows Phone has grown in its place to give Microsoft a marketshare of 3.6%.

Android in FOUR out of 5 new smartphones. How d'ya like dem Apples?

fishman

Microsoft market share not growing?

A couple of years ago, the Windows Mobile + Windows Phone marketshare was 3.6%. Now the Windows Mobile marketshare has died, and Microsoft still only has the same marketshare as before. So the growth of Windows Phone has been at the expense of Windows Mobile.

And that's including the $250M per quarter payment from Microsoft. Otherwise it would have been a $368M loss.

LG

"As any fule kno, LG Corporation used to be called Lucky Goldstar before it fell victim to the name-abbrev'ing craze of the late 2000s."

I think they changed it to LG so the unwashed masses would not realize that it was the same company that made the crappy Goldstar junk.

Panasonic throws in towel on plasma tellies, preps for BILLION-dollar kick in pants

fishman

Power draw isn't as bad as it used to be. IIRC, a 50" plasma uses around $12. more electricity a year than a similar sized LCD. And the picture is far better.

It's really a shame to see them going. Hopefully mine will last long enough that some new technology will come along and at least equal the Panasonic Plasmas.

Peak Apple: Has ANYONE at all ordered a new iPhone 5c?

fishman

Re: Total lack of story here...

Normally Apple sells the previous years iPhone at a reduced price. They are selling the 5c at the price they would have charged for the 5. And since the 5c is cheaper to make than the 5, their profit margin is higher. I would not be surprised if they make more profit off of each 5c they sell compared to the 5s.

Google cursed its own phones with wacked Wi-Fi, say Nexus users

fishman

I've got a Nexus 4 running 4.3, and I've had no problems at all. I installed 4.3 25 days ago with no crashes or reboots. Battery life seems better, and it seems to pick up marginal signals better when on the net. And Wi-Fi seems to work fine - I downloaded several 200+ MB files over Wi-Fi with no problems.

The wife doesn't have any problems with her Nexus 4, either.

Ironic, considering that for many years quite a few associated Microsoft with the borg.

BTW, I'd rather have the one that works best for me, instead of trying to be different. I do many things different from most people, but that's because something works best for me.
