Google Chrome on Windows 'completely unusable', gripe users

Irongut

Not just on Windows

Recent Android builds have been pretty bad too.

They've got nothing on the new version of the Android GMail app. The new Lolipop like interface is awful, its a memory hog and performance is so bad it hangs for several minutes trying to display a short email. It's just an email how effin hard can it be!

Pity the poor Windows developer: The tools for desktop development are in disarray

Irongut

Since 1998? Pfft I was using RAD in 1995 with Delphi 1! ;)

I've tried WPF and I'd love to say it works and I use it but It doesn't and neither do I. I've stuck with WinForms except where there is a requirement for WPF in the project. As you say WPF is clunky and feels like using a form designer from the 90s. But then a lot of .Net and Visual Studio feels like its still trying to catch up with Delphi 7.

Twitter App Graph exposes smartphone spyware feature

Irongut

Re: The real question is

How about an app that lists running processes and lets you kill them? There are lots of those for Andorid and none of them would work without this feature so of course you can enumerate running apps.

So much FUD in the article and no useful detail, very bad. Listing running/installed apps is a legitimate function. What makes this spyware is reporting it back to the developers. So do you need to run and log in to the Twitter app for them to know what apps you have installed or does it report back even if you aren't a user?

HTML5 vs native: Harry Coder and the mudblood mobile app princes

Irongut

Re: An odd change of focus in the article...

"embedding IE into an app to cheekily render content has been going on for at least a decade"

Try since IE4. That was about 1998 IIRC.

Irongut

What a load of toss.

An app on iOS that happens to use HTML is not the mobile web. It requires the purchase of specific hardware to run and must be obtained from iTunes. Even if there are versions for other platforms it is still not the mobile web beacuse all those versions also require specific hardware and installation from a specific app store. They will also be different apps because even though they share the HTML/JS code the rest of the app and the binary format are different.

Websites that work well on all mobile devices from the same URL are the mobile web.

As usual, an article by Matt Asay is more about the buzzword bingo than the given topic.

Glasgow boffins: We can now do it, Captain. We DO have the molecular storage power

Irongut
Boffin

So they finally did it?

Glasgow Uni have been working on molecular memory since I did my electronics degree there in the early 90s. Twenty years later they finally managed to make it work? I doubt many of the professors I knew are still there. Why did it take so long?

Nexus 7 fandroids tell of salty taste after sucking on Google's Lollipop

Irongut

No surprise

The latest version of the Gmail app is a total dog and the UI has regressed to something less usable. I gather this is the new Lolipop style so its no great surprise that the OS is a total dog too.

Mozilla, EFF, Cisco back free-as-in-FREE-BEER SSL cert authority

Irongut

Re: Do I understand this?

The little green padlock only appears on sites with extended validation certificates. These involve actual checks to ensure the purchaser is who they say they are so cost more than a basic certificate. The article only mentions basic certificates and since they are going to be free I would doubt they will supply ev certs.

Cries of spies as audit group finds possible 'backdoor' in Bittorrent Sync

SAVE ME, NASA system builder, from my DEAD WORKSTATION

Irongut

Re: I did this last year with Scan / 3XS

I can wholeheartedly say don't use Scan. I have used them in the past but never again. We bought several systems from them in January and I was very displeased. Many of the parts I had selected for a personal development machine were not available (nothing unusual they just didn't have the stock), the person who phoned me was not able to recommend a suitable replacement and the order took weeks to be built and shipped. Despite telling them I wanted to RAID the drives they supplied a non-RAID capable motherboard. Then after less than 6 months one of the hard drives died. Thank god for backups.

My own self builds with components sourced from the best deals I can find are cheaper and more reliable.

Speaking of which I just priced up what AVA would charge for the gaming system I've just built myself. They have a pretty good selection but not many GTX970 cards so I had to substitute a different brand. At the end the cost was twice what it cost me to build myself and no doubt they would want p&p on top of that! So nice try but still way too expensive.

The last PC replacement cycle is about to start turning

Irongut

Advertorial

"new iPhone is the second most powerful computer I own... far more powerful than my first MacBook Air, purchased in the long-ago days of 2011."

Bullshit. If it's more powerful than a three year old MacBook then why does it run a cut down phone OS instead of OSX?

No more clueless advertorials please El Reg, you're better than that.

Boxing clever? Amazon Fire TV is SO CLOSE to being excellent

Irongut

Meh

Since I'm not already locked into Amazon's walled back yard it sounds like my Chromecast is the better device. About the only thngs FireTV does that it doesn't are play crappy games and stream from Amazon Prime. I don't need the former and the later seem to charge a fortune for anything good so even though I am a Prime member I've never watched anything on it, Netflix is a much better deal.

Ex-Soviet engines fingered after Antares ROCKET launch BLAST

Irongut

Re: Depressing

"The engines, albeit 50+ years old, are solid. They have good engineering, a reasonable pedigree and just as important, there is an available supply."

The engines don't exactly have a great track record. It seems they blew up in testing every time the Russians used them and have never actually lifted a rocket into space. And that available supply is finite, once the old engines in storage are used up then they're done.

It really would have made more sense for OS to develop their own engines or partner with someone who builds new engines, not refurbishes old ones.

"5 GHz band is too weak a signal to be useful outside of the same room"

Bull.

I use 5Ghz at home to avoid the congestion from other networks on 2.4Ghz. I live in a Glasgow tenement with thick stone and brick walls. The 5Ghz signal is just as useful as the 2.4Ghz signal at the other end of the flat to the router. My phone can even pick it up and use it to stream music two floors down at ground level while sat in a parked car.
