US switches off the incandescent lightbulb

Michael Compton

Its amazing that...

...heavy metals such as mercury used to be considered the big environmental evil now because of CO2 hysteria we are filling our homes with the stuff. On top of this the vast majority of people probably don't realise they contain mercury and so are going to just chuck them in the bin.

In about 10 years the environmentalist are going to be going mad at all the poisoned land and conveniently forget they were the ones that encouraged the CFL adoption.

I quite like CFL's but i think the general public is woefully misinformed/uninformed regarding them.

Happy

we only get 60 odd in a life time

So let the good times roll :)

Though we probably forget most, either to young to remember or to much 'spirit' in the subsequent years. And the ones we do remember we would probably rather forget the majority :)

Re. And they wonder why.....

I concur and the soon more people stop paying for these over-hyped over priced piles of crap the sooner we can get rid of the corporate monstrocities and over payed actors responsible for pushing such dung.

But unfortuately the vast majority of people are sheep and will happily buy what there told to buy, horray for consumerism.

German Wikipedia attacked over Nazi symbolism

Michael Compton

Hiding doesn't make it go away

Sticking ur head in the sand is no way to solve the problem.

Most of the more morally unacceptable portions of the National Socialist idealogy can be quite easily ripped apart as nothing more than sensationalist propoganda. Pretty much the same as any propoganda spewed by people with an agenda as long as it is view in an objective manner and compared to alternative points of view. The way to acheive this is to educate in an unbaised manner and give people the intellectual tools to form their own opinions. Free speech and debate is one of the ways to achieve this end.

Newly-homeless kids get free iPod

Proper wee consumers

Yeah life would just not be worth living without those JobsPod. And we wonder whats going wrong with the world when these are the values we are positively encouraging.

Video games blamed for England Euro flop

Michael Compton

Simple fact of the matter is...

England have never been as good as they think they are or were. They have only ever won one major tournament a World cup over 30 years ago and they think they are world beaters. Italy 4 wins Germany 3 wins.

BBC sports recently had a list of top players of all time, there was one english player lying in 20th place or so, though its a rather subjective list i think it adequately illustrates my point that they just aren't that good.

Bootnote: I think the english press should accept a little responsiblity for making it even more difficult, they basically got Sven sacked and he hadn't done that bad they progressed as far as they deserved to. The stats below are all matchs under Sven hardly terrible.

Blu-ray discs outsell HD DVDs almost 3:1 in Europe

Michael Compton

Yep and we picked the wrong one

HD DVD would have been a better stop gap solution until one of the more advanced storage formats, which blow either out of the water such as holograhic discs, is available at consumer prices in the not too distant future.

Blu Ray offers not much more than HD DVD when compared to the promise of some of the future tech.

The other thing is they aren't even using near to all the capacity on the Blu Ray when releasing a film on it so whats the point.

Crime-busting gator kills Florida fugitive

Michael Compton

WTF

He jumps into a gator pool duelly gets ate and the Gator has to be put down, not like the thing was walking down the street looking for a victim. Unlike what some people might think we are not the special and when an animal does what it has been doing for 100's of thousands that causes the death of human being its not evil its called life.

Same thing happens when ever people see a great white in the ocean, in the ocean would u believe near our beachs oh the humanity, they all call for action as if we have more right to be in the ocean than a fish. We are the all singing all dancing crap of the world but we are not special.

'We can't lock them up forever' - top cops join terror debate

Michael Compton

I propose a pilot scheme

In the name of science and to show how this is a fundamentally bad idea to allow police to lock people up for 3 months for ineffect no reason, if there was a reason they would be convicted. I propose the advocates get locked up for 3 months and if they are still on for it after that they should probably be sent to a shrink. Police holding cells are not nice.

Royal Navy presses IT Crowd for nuclear missile 'servers'

Michael Compton

re: @all the arrogant IT ppl & All the geeks

We as tax paying citizens pay the wages and buy the kit so I feel we are in a good position to say what we want about the apparatus of Diplomacy by other means.

'Courage to Defend their country....' From what, Osama and his cronies or the drugs trade maybe. Last time I checked Britain was not directly threatened for the last 60 years.

If we stopped sending these guys round the world killing it would be a damn sight cheaper, also a nuclear deterrent only works when u actually have someone to deter, last I checked there was no one, and anyone that was likely to could crush our armed forces quite easily with conventional means, thinking China here.

Battle of Britain pilots actually crap shots

Michael Compton

Valid points and well documented

Indeed Hitler seemed to have had a bit of a soft spot for the British.

Though I'd still debate its relevance in the overall defeat of Germany, the Wehrmacht and Waffen SS were beat in Russia and even a combined US British force would have bother gaining a foothold in Europe if they weren't tied down and depleted there. By the time of Overlord the Allies were facing admittedly veteran units but ones that where severly depleted and the replacements by that stage where pretty much the dregs Germany could dig up.

Even if the Kriegsmarine was freed up it was not much of a force, and to get to the Pacific, u'd need to be there to atempt to cut off russia completely, would be a long trip for a Sub even if they managed to some how get passage through the Suez.

It was a long war though so the 'cause and effects' are quite wide ranging for anything.

Michael Compton

@ Karl again

Just checked your wiki source and actually if you had of read 2 lines down it says

" German historians usually place the beginning of the battle in mid-August 1940 and end it in May 1941, on the withdrawal of the bomber units in preparation for the attack on the USSR."

and so if we take say mid way between then my comment still holds water.

Michael Compton

@ Karl

I said the Russians won the war not the battle of Britain, and i'm afraid you are sorely mistaken if you think u can move an entire airforce and its support staff from one side of europe to the other in much less than around 6 months as well as at the same time moving a lot of other military hardware; tanks, ammo, food, fuel etc. Remember the vast majority of an airforce doesn't fly so it has to go the slow way on railways and roads that where already jammed full of hardware. Sure the Germans even delayed the invasion by around a month to allow more hardware to brought to the impending front.

The fact of the matter is the Battle of Britain was really quite trivial in the grand scheme of things because like I said all evidence points to the fact Germany did not have either the material or doctrine to carry out a large scale ampihous assault on the UK mainland.

Germany did indeed fail in the BoB and like someone else said it was more a collection of causes not one overriding heroic act or something. Propoganda is a powerful tool and by the looks of it something started 60 odd years ago to boost flagging moral is still having an affect.

The best Germany would have got out of the endeavour would have been a phyrric victory.

Thanks for the reply though :)

Michael Compton

Why's everyone getting so worked up

The battle of Britain failed/ended due to ego's and a little thing called the Eastern Front, the Russians won the war after all :)

If Goering had of stuck to military targets and the planes didn't have to all rebase to Poland then maybe things would have been different.

Though as a number of wargames showed after the war Germany could never successfully invade Britain even if they had Air superority, the RN and Germanys lack of heavy transport craft makes it near impossible.

But would the C 130 not be a better comparison as they are both turboprops, C17 being a turbofan. Comparing the vitals of C 130 to the A400M is alot more favourable. But like i said i'm not an aircraft buff.

'Screw the Long Tail'? Not us!

Michael Compton

@Will

The nature of my work is irrelevant to the point i'm making, the vast majority of us just get a flat wage and thats it and if we want something to retire with we need to save.

In what sense is the production of overpriced entertainment providing anything to mankind. Bach, Beethoven and all had no such thing as royalites yet produced some very beautiful music. Please explain how modern 'artists' deserve substantually more renumeration than the rest of us.

Oh and if ur statement about agent means be contractor, they are nearly even more worthless.

Also i am making these comments as an 'artist' as well because i do produce my own music, far more entertaining than listening to the tripe that gets pushed.

For every lame big name signed 'artist' there is a 1000 unsigned acts that are twice as original, and i bet they get F all from royality collection agencies

LOL at value productive software less than art, they would value it if it wasn't there thats for sure.

Michael Compton

Almost forgot....

My Job does suck :)

I don't vote either, but i will still complain. Its in my nature to pick out the badness in everything. :)

Happy Weekend all, i'm leaving this sweat shop now going to start busking instead, might get paid more :)

Michael Compton

More and more a can't seem to justify a royality model

The rest of us get paid once and thats it why should flipant 'entertainment' producers get endless payments.

I have produced numerous Assembler updates for my company which gets run every day for millions of people, but could loss my job tomorrow and get nothing more for it.

What makes them think they're work is worth more than mine. Go out and work for your money play gigs sell records of those gigs at the end sell T-Shirts with ur band logo or whatever, just don't expect to get payed for sitting on ur arse.

This model only allows people like Gary Glitter to go looking for young people in this twilight years

Well i think it was ASUS, I remember seeing it a while back it was a shelf that placed the components on which transfered both data and power wirelessly to and from the special shelf you placed the components .

Admittedly it was only a concept but a tad cooler if you ask me

AMD passes the collection plate again

They really should have went with some sort of partnership if at all possible.

And if it was the other way round....

If a black man was standing over a pile of white men would anyone have cared, probably not.

You know if you go to most any country in the world outside Europe or the US they really don't get so worked up about things. Indeed alot of them would be considered rather racist in there views and comments about other ethnical groups if they lived in Europe and the US and would probably be locked up.

In Morroco they call black morrocans niggers (not all morrocans mind), and no i don't feel ashamed for telling u so, and in Japan they pretty much think if ur not Japanese ur not that good, great people though love Japan and Morroco all very friendly people :)

Martian ice swaps poles every 25,000 years

Michael Compton

Not to be facetious or anything :)

But if indeed the farting farm cows, and i assume other grass mungers, are a factor as well as other human activites in causing global warming that would not otherwise have happen. Then it begs the question why now when they have been around for a very long time, and I assume farting the entire time.

Not to say we shouldn't spend money cleaning up, I do like to breathe after all. But what if it was going to happen anyway and we can do nothing about it should we not spend money on trying to adapt as opposed to trying to control the environment and climate of a whole planet. More often than not we can not see the consequences of our actions, imagine if we accidently started a ice age through some mad cap plan to curb global warming.

Hyperion harbours building blocks of life, says NASA

Michael Compton

To Colin

I'm no space scientist but i assume thats its low gravitional pull means object on the surface don't have enough downward force exertion to push through the relatively low density material. Plus it will compact the material as it goes making it more dense and so requiring greater force to move further into the body.

Just my thoughts and i could be missing something so please correct me if I'm way off someone.

German teen unplugs pensioner's 'noisy' life support machine

Its the planet

Maybe he saw a large machine wasting electricity keeping some rotting flesh warm and decided he'd do his bit for the environment and turn it off, global warming is a serious issue and must be tackled what ever the cost :)

Yes its a sick tongue in cheek joke but i don't really care :)
