Doesn't Matter

It doesn't matter what system they're using, not securing the system is a serious failure. This guy is just a failure all the way around.

Ex-prez Carter: 'America has no functioning democracy' with PRISM

I attended a dinner at the Carter Center in 2005 and the Secret Service was most definitely there.

But yes, he is likely the finest man that has ever been U.S. President. Certainly too 'good' and intelligent for the job.

Re: He's right

The US supports term limits right in the Constitution. The 22nd amendment imposes limits on the Presidency, just add Representative and Senator and that's sorted.

Don Jefe

Re: Functional what?

What did we have in 80's?

Don Jefe

Re: Where is the fourth estate?

Because Carter has pissed off every political personage in DC over the years by speaking too much truth. No matter what the press would like you to think they are too scared to piss off their current pet Congressmen and staffers by talking him up. It's a shame really.

Re: Achievement Unlocked: New Cadillac

Yes. It takes quite a bit of experience to forge the lasting relationships with constituents and peers that allow them to gorge themselves on pork kickbacks and donations for decades. That's why newbie Congressmen have the shittiest cars and have their 'DC' homes in Maryland, thy can't afford to live in DC. It takes a few terms to unlock those achievements.

The Congressmen hire their own personal staff (Representatives have 14 full time personal staff each and Senators have 34). It is a common for political hopefuls to work as Congressional staff but almost none of them ever become Congressmen, they can actually do something so they don't really fit in with Congress.

Don Jefe

Re: He's right

The no term limit thing really is the core of the issue. Both parties hold the internal rules of both houses in higher regard than the Constitution or the country. They do that because they know they can live above the law forever as long as they hide in their offices.

Re: Unfair competition

You've lost your mind if you believe any large industry in any country plays strictly by the balance sheet. It has never worked that way and never will.

A truly free market can never exist because the first 'person' to have enough money to manipulate the market and/or government in their favor will do so. That's an unavoidable fact of capitalism. One can argue that the ability to accumulate enough wealth to manipulate the markets/government is proof that capitalism is working. I don't necessarily agree with that argument, but a lot of economic theorists do.

Proper FUD

No. Good FUD relies on the perceived power and knowledge of the speaker. Effective FUD sows the seeds of doubt and let's you draw your own conclusions. The idea being that human nature will make any unknown factor far more dangerous than it is in reality.

Knowing who this guy is, I would venture to say he is an expert in creating and disseminating FUD.

Re: "Unfair competition"

Like how Boeing and Airbus arrange preferential financing through their home goverments to get their planes sold? I can't think of any government who doesn't subsidize their large scale manufacturing exports either directly or indirectly through tax benefits and such. It is common business.

Don Jefe

Re: Conflicted much?

Yeah, but look at the boards of many big tech companies and you'll see ex-military and senior civil servants either seated directly on the board or executive management or working for a consulting firm whose only client seems to be that company. It is the remuneration they were promised for 'fixing things' but couldn't accept until they left public service. It's really dodgy and most tech companies have a really chummy back channel relationship with government because of it.

Don Jefe

Sound Financial Decision

All the Western countries that are so fond of spying on their citizens should just outsource it to Huawei. It would certainly be a lot cheaper just to let the Chinese handle it then buy reports back from them. The potential savings in IT kit alone would be worth it and we'd be able to retask a bunch of government workers. The Chinese obviously have a better grasp on mass surveillance anyway and I'm sure they'd be able to make better use of the data.

Most western law enforcement tossed 'seeking the truth' out the window a long time ago. What they seek now is the easiest conviction they can get. Therefore they need access to as much information as possible to string together any case they can conjure up.

Re: The Civil Service at its best!

This is reflective of privatization as much as government. Any time a private company can tilt things in their favor they're going to. Nobody should be surprised by that. Not arguing for bigger, more intrusive government, but if government spent their time (and money) doing what they're supposed to be doing instead of being intrusive and pandering to their private sector buddies things would be a lot better.

But the new models really aren't any more efficient than the old ones. There is some small improvement during operation but if you figure in the tremendous spike in idle energy use its pretty much a wash. It's fairly misleading on the part of the manufacturers. Why actually make things more efficient when you can just move the target around.

Chinese Marketing

China is moving its national policies away from exporting and into internal consumption of Chinese brands and products. I don't think the deadly phone story was aimed at Westerners, it was aimed at Chinese citizens who are looking for a new phone.

The Chinese successfully leveraged their massive population to build a manufacturing infrastructure designed to build things for the Chinese, not the West. Now they have enough paid workers who are experiencing consumption addiction for the first time and they can and are slowly (re)building walls around themselves. Everything up to this point was to allow them to jump start internal Westernesque markets and they've succeeded. We can expect many more anti-Western product stories.

Also, the pilot names thing was funny. I'm really, really sad for the people who perished but there's nothing wrong with having a good chuckle at a tangentially related aspect of the story. Cultures all over the world make fun of how words in other languages sound/mean in their languages.

Re: Interest

Your PayPal balance does accrue interest if you sign up for their money market service. You can lose at it too although they haven't ever lost any of my money. Re: aren't realizing the full purchasing power of your money.

In the US merchant services agreements strictly prohibit the merchant passing on processing fees to the customer beyond a certain set amount that can't be calculated as a percentage of the purchase. Small merchants get around this by offering discounts for cash or minimum purchase amount when using a card.

But yes, if you pay your balance in full every month you are essentially getting free money through the rewards systems.

Re: aren't realizing the full purchasing power of your money.

Nobody said free lunch, you have to pay, but why not stretch the dollar a little further. Using my credit card has no down side for me. I have the money for my purchases but if I pay with cash or check I don't get the rewards. The annual card holder fees are trivial next to what I receive in points and less than what I accrue annually in my savings account.

It sounds like you were using your credit cards as short term loans instead of as a cash substitute. That's simply poor financial management. Just because you made poor decisions in the past doesn't mean you can't learn from them and not be scared of credit cards.

Don Jefe

Re: @Zmodem

If you're balancing spending out of your savings you're losing interest. Using a CC doesn't effect your holdings as long as you pay it every month.

Don Jefe

Re: @Zmodem

I bought my wife's SmartCar on my credit card simply because of the cash (points really) back option. I use my credit card for 95% of my purchases. There is no interest as I pay the balance every month, no practical limit, and I have enough reward points to buy all the birthday presents I have to get throughout the year. I also get large discounts on my plane tickets, rental cars and car insurance and don't have to carry much cash.

Not sure where you're getting your financial advice, but you need to find someone new. If you're using cash or debit you aren't realizing the full purchasing power of your money.

Re: The MAD question

Nuclear weapons don't impact real foreign policy decisions. No one negotiates anymore based on nukes and only two countries ever really did, everyone else just wanted to feel big too. The U.S. and Russia have been the only two countries that ever the capabilities and the institutional madness to use MAD as a strategic deterrent.

MAD was never about having a few nukes to lob at the bad guy for tactical advantage, it was about having 30,000+ nukes to lob at them and completely and utterly destroy everything. Not just Capitol cities and manufacturing hubs and military resources but everything. It was packaged xenocide. Geographically small countries were foolish to ever get involved in nuclear armament. They made themselves targets that could be destroyed with stock that had rolled under warehouse shelves and never had enough power to retaliate in a comparable manner.

The US still has 5,000+ nukes ready to go and Russia has who knows how many. Why would anyone even bother building 50 or 100? Spend the money on something useful in situations that are going to occur: Carriers, ground forces and such, stuff that can actually be used.

Re: The MAD question

"If they are rational enough to be playing with game theory, what imaginable reason would they have for attacking Britain"

Ah! That's an common oversimplification of game theory, where you assume your opponent (real or imagined) is using a strategy where you are the actual target as opposed to using you as a pawn in a greater game against another opponent. An attack on Britain would destabilize not only Europe and the US, it could serve as a distraction to draw attention away from the occupation of Australia. A nation rich in resources and low in population, thus easy to conquer for a nation willing and capable of launching a nuclear strike on a Western nation.

Game theory is a good exercise, but it has serious flaws as one must assume a logic chain similar to your own in order to play out scenarios. The insanity necessary to instigate a nuclear war cannot be simulated or accurately modeled, that's why it is called insanity. The best defence ends up being one of ridiculous over readiness or refusal to play the game in the first place. Refusing to play would be the most effective and responsible but that wouldn't satisfy the 'biggest gun' egos of most countries goverments.

- How do we verify our indulgence is genuine and not a shitty Protestant knock off?

This is simply a rush job in an attempt to get first mover advantage over competitors. The other guys get 72 virgins so I can see where a distinctive, non lethal product offering might be advantageous, but that doesn't excuse shoddy policy development with no recourse available to the consumer. It might show some short term traction but historically these sorts of things only end up with the end user holding the bag.
