You'd think ...
people would know how to make a charger by now.

I find it easier to record programmes off air and watch them later because you can then fast forward or edit out all the ads and other crap. That's a lot harder if you use catch-up tv services on the web. A typical one hour Channel 5 programme comes down to 40 minutes when you delete the dross.
"the shops would then also be able to double the price of all goods over night."
No, it could be beneficial on balance because shops like to round prices up to the next multiple of £10 and then take 1p off to make silly shoppers think it's cheaper. €9.99 is less than £9.99.
Webmail really only front-ends email, so the traffic is SMTP, POP/IMAP etc. - only http as far as the web server. Same with a lot of web forms that generate email messages.
Usenet I use regularly. Didn't it use UUCP originally? I first used it on a Unix system and that was pre-WWW.
I do run FTP servers and use FTP to upload files to web sites. Never used gopher though.
Legally, even if you are stopped in a layby you must apply the handbrake and take the ignition key out of the lock before using a hand-held mobile. Note that just switching off does NOT engage the steering lock - you have to remove the key.
Making a call hands-free is just about as distracting as holding the mobe in your hand because you are not concentrating on your driving, so don't do it. However if the mobe is just running a satnav app then it's equivalent to a stand-alone satnav. Both are distracting especially if you try to reprogram them whilst driving.
These formats (OpenXML, ODF, etc.) are word processing formats. A document may not format the same on two different computers even if they are running the same operating system and the same version of whatever "productivity suite". The result depends on printer settings (paper size, margins, fonts, etc).
PS and PDF are print formats and should render the same if the paper is big enough. However PDF is not as portable as its name would suggest because Adobe has added so many bells and whistles to Acrobat that its files are no longer readable on some platforms unless an older version is forced.
Well I'd certainly have included the Texas Ti Programmer. I can't remember if it had a model number, but it was the first one I came across that could work in octal, decimal and hexadecimal. I'm sure I had something like the black Sinclair for a long time - red led display but oblong keys. My first calculator was a Hemmi Sun which I have in my hand right now.!
If Windows didn't use extensions for file types then it would presumably use proper file types which are independent of filenames. I'm fed up with getting attachments typed as binary data (Application/octet-stream) because some stupid Windows or webmail client hasn't bothered to set the Content-type properly.
One problem is that if Windows users hide frequently used extensions, which is/was the default, then the attackers can send filenames ending in .doc.exe which look like .doc files if you've overlooked the fact that you shouldn't be seeing .doc either.
The ransomeware is usually a .exe file inside a .zip file. I've received loads of them not just pretending to be from financial institutions but also from couriers.
"By establishing things like XML and HTML as standards, the W3C has helped ensure the web works everywhere – no matter what web server or browser you’re using."
Which it lamentably failed to do. How many sites do you come across that only "support" certain browsers? Many are written to exploit particular features in certain browsers that aren't available for all platforms.
My Concise Oxford Dictionary gives several meanings:
1. n. Bundle of sticks or twigs bound together as fuel;
bundle of iron rods for heat treatment;
bundle of herbs (usu. in pl.);
dish of liver etc. chopped seasoned and baked as ball or roll;
unpleasant woman;
(sl.) homosexual (usu. male).
It can also be used as a verb usually in the context of embroidery.
Also look up faggot-vote - it doesn't mean what you might assume!
Of course "fag" on this side of the pond means "cigarette" amongst other things (toil, drudgery etc) so "lighting up a fag" or "I'm dying for a fag" might trigget a few alarms at farcebook.
I deg to biffer. I use an LG HD monitor (27" because that was the largest I could find, although to get the same picture height as my old 25" CRT I would really need a 32" low height screen) and a HDD/DVD recorder soon to be upgraded to a smart HD HDD/BD recorder. I don't see why the tuner and speakers need to be crammed into the back of a flat panel screen. I have a perfectly good sound system so I don't need an inferior one in the tv. The industry is losing out by not actively marketing tv 'separates'.
"So rather than one pirated original, someone obtains two. Compare the two versions to identify their respective watermarks, or alternate a frame from each to produce a unique third copy - add their own watermark and see how far it spreads."
I think you'd need at least three independently downloaded copies. Then where there's a discrepancy if all but one agree you take that value otherwise you set a value based on the surrounding pixels. You still have a problem if the signature is based on the positions of modified pixels rather than their values. Adding extra frames won't defeat forensic examination there could be some pixels that are set to predefined values on all copies for synchronisation purposes. Just downscaling to HD would make it difficult though.
But what's the point of UHD if you pepper it with random pixels?
"I tried to transfer away from BT only to realise after waiting 6 weeks to get an unreliable internet connection that my new ISP ( Plusnet ) was in fact wholly owned by BT. Sad times."
Plusnet operates as an autonomous company and is a great deal better than the parent. The connection problems probably lie with BT or BT Wholesale regardless of your ISP.
